FROM THE PASTOR "Building up the Body" for "An Act of Grace" Just one year ago this month we set our focus toward our work together in mission and ministry for 2012 under the banner "Building Up the Body" based upon the call to the early church community in Ephesus (chapter 4). Over 100 of us gathered to set our sites on that goal and lean into how God would have us live into it. Look at the mission and ministries which have been "built" Retirements were celebrated for Patti and Trudy. We are grateful for the ways in which they have created a firm foundation upon which to continue to build. Thank you, Patti and Trudy. 3 new staff persons have been hired and 2 staff persons have transitioned to new positions. "Welcome!" to Carmie, Matt and Kathy. "Great Job!" Sharyl and Lauralee. An Office Ministry Team has responded to a call to ministry and been trained… All 15+ of them! Greater collaboration between the church and the preschool has resulted in... The church library receiving a gaggle of preschool students on Tuesday mornings for "story time" and the opportunity to check out books. A free community concert which was attended by over 100 children and their parents. A "Worship Exploration Team" has been commissioned. They will meet for prayer, study and exploration of the traditions of UM worship toward the future vitality of worship, music and the arts at Faith UMC for the next year and then make observations and recommendations to the Church Board. Collaboration between the Trustees and the Finance Team for the development of a long-term facilities project plan. The Membership Care Team has re-formed for mission and ministry effectiveness. Mary Jane Fletcher retired from her member in ministry as the head of the Cookery and a new Food Ministry is being formed. Thank you, Mary Jane, for feeding our bodies and our spirits! The Service in Missions team celebrates... The completion of 2 Habitat Houses which Faith UMC built in cooperation with 11 other churches in the North Canton area! The commissioning of 3 missionaries to Camphor Mission Station, Liberia and the preparation of a 2nd team in 2013. Blessings upon Nancy, Maribeth and Steve (2012)! Blessings upon Teresa, Heather, Cara and … YOU (there are still 2 spots left!) The Outreach Team welcomed 120+ runners and 70+ members in mission for the first annual "Run to the Resurrection." The youth completed their 25th Mission Trip with Butch as their leader. Thank you, Butch, for shaping the lives of hundreds of youth over these years! The above ministry is a small indication of the ways in which Faith UMC has been "Building Up the Body" in 2012 so that we may be launched on an "Act of Grace" in 2013. Nearly 70 of us met the first Saturday in October to catch the vision for how God will send us out in the year to come. th your slightly

used winter coats may be placed in the collection boxes located in the Gathering Area and the Family

Life Center. Thank you for your donations.

Thank you for continuing to drop your coins and bills into the collection containers! Our 8

children at the New Horizon School continue to work hard. The new school year

starts in February. We will need another $1000 between now and then, so keep your

contributions coming! Consider making a gift to the fund as a Christmas gift for

someone or as a year-end contribution. Please continue your prayers for the children.

Community Christmas During the upcoming Christmas season, we will be helping families in need through Adopt-A-Family Community Christmas. Faith UMC has been joining with this mission for many years and this year we are needed all the more as there is an abundance of families in need! We will be looking for an assortment of sizes and gifts for multiple ages (Community Christmas does allow participants to only purchase gifts for the children, if so inclined.) Nancy King will be coordinating the contributions from Faith UMC by shopping for and wrapping the gifts. Help with both the shopping and wrapping is welcome. Anyone willing to make a financial donation may leave a check in the of-fice or give it to Nancy King. There will be a table set up in the Gathering Area on the Sundays throughout Novem-ber. This month our students have been working through a series entitled The Invisibles. This series examines the chal-lenges that many of us have faced with feeling invisible at certain points of our lives, seeing others who may be invisible to us right now, and gaining an understanding that we have never been invisible to God. Each week includes a discussion question/point that our parents and their students are encouraged to wrestle through together. The first week’s discussion point reads as follows, “Describe a time when you felt invisible.”

I think if we examined our lives there have been times that we all have felt invisible. There are probably times when

we have wished for someone to come up and talk to us but deep down were afraid that someone would because that would mean that we would actually have to talk to them. But what happens to us when someone does reach out and connect with us? What happens when someone notices that we are not invisible but rather that we have a unique and special story to tell? What happens when someone looks at our heart rather than passes a quick glance our direction?

A few years ago, I was serving with a group of students and adults at a homeless shelter in West Virginia as a part of a

mission trip experience. After our time of serving it was time for us to leave and head back to the church where we were stay-ing, however I noticed a young man out of the corner of my eye who struck me as someone who needed something else. I could have left with our group and missed out on his story but something (rather Someone, meaning God) made me stay. I found myself wandering over to the bed beside him and sat down across from him. Upon doing so we made small talk about his situation, family, and life. I found myself almost in tears as he shared about an illness he had that caused his family to leave him, which included three beautiful children. I listened to his story about how he was out of work, how he had served our country faithfully in the army, and so much more about his struggles. Throughout the conversation, I found myself crying with him as he shared his hurt so openly and honestly. This young man had been invisible for so long to so many people, that my heart just broke thinking about the hardships that he had endured. Without really thinking about it, I started to share about my faith and asked Jeremy if he would like to know more about a God who loves him and wants a relationship with him? He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said “YES!” I grabbed a couple of other adults and we started praying for Jeremy right then and there. After we finished he looked up at me with tears in his eyes and simply said “Thank you.” We made several offers to him to reconnect with us while we were there and he said he would be alright. As I went to bed that night I realized that God had seen Jeremy all along and he was never truly invisible to others even though he thought he was. The next morn-ing Jeremy showed up at the church we were staying at which proved to be a wonderful connection for him as he served alongside of us, began worshipping there, and eventually got a job helping him get back on his feet. I lost touch with Jeremy after our time together but I often think of him and pray for him wherever he is. I wonder how my life would have been different if I hadn’t stopped to listen to his story while seeking to connecting him to God’s Story.

When is a time in your life you have felt invisible? I’m sure that many of us can share stories of our own personal hurt

and pain when we were overlooked but what about the times we overlook others? My challenge to you this week is to find someone who may be invisible to others, and simply take time to listen to their story.

Next summer our students will be traveling to Rockford, Illinois to partner with Rockford Urban Mission for their sum-

mer mission trip. As we prepare for this trip we will be having a couple of fundraising opportunities that we wanted to make you aware of. First, we will be holding a brunch on Sunday, November 11 and second, our donation board will be going up the beginning of November as well.

As our students prepare for their mission trip to Rockford, Illinois in the summer of 2013 they have already started

earning their service/fundraising hours during the past few months. We have had students participate through: Teen Tech Team Vacation Bible School Weeding at Barb Whitacre’s house Date Night Habitat for Humanity

Our students are always looking for opportunities to serve others throughout the year. If you know of a service oppor-tunity, feel free to contact Susan Arnold ([email protected]) or Donny Bell ([email protected]) or Matt Hart ([email protected]). Thank you for your partnering with this life-changing ministry!

The Garden of Weedin’ and the salsa sales have been successful again. Thanks to our loyal workers, we have raised almost $800 to help feed the hungry in our area. A check for $375

was sent to the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank. They provide four meals for every dollar contributed, so our gift will provide 1500 meals. The balance of the money raised will provide food for a couple hundred people at Faith Kitchen on the last Saturday of the month. Our little plot of ground has yielded a wonderful harvest! Thanks be to God and to all of you who helped make this project such a success!

Guidestone, a Health and Wellness organization of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, has made a donation in our name to thank Faith Church for our hospitality. In August, Faith Church hosted a 2-day seminar with national speakers who equipped and empowered leaders who serve Stark County children and families. This gift was directed to benefit the children and families of Stark County.

The Trustees have established the Trustee Wall to inform the congregation of the

activities of the Trustees at the church and parsonage.

If you attend the second service on Sundays,

you know the images from the projectors have

become blurred. These are the original projectors from 2002. We hope to have new projectors installed in time for the holiday

season.

The heating and A/C units in the parlor have worn out. We are in the process of reviewing

bids to replace the units by year end. The Trustees have changed the electrical

supplier for the Church and parsonage and expect annual savings are to exceed $3,000.

Reminder : If you use either of the Church kitchens, please clean the equipment and

utensils and return it to where they are stored. Thanks!

The Stewardship Ministry Team and Communications Team have been very busy planning their fall programs. We are excited that most Time and Talent forms, Commitment forms, Living Faith Publication, and Stewardship Devotional will be available on line to complete or print out. In an effort to be good stewards of our resources we are not sending out mailing for these forms. We are hoping you will help our efforts by visiting our website at www.faithumchurch.org to find all the forms. For those of you who do not have access to a computer we are making forms available to you in the pews today and next Sunday. There is also a table in the Gathering Area with all the forms and publications.

Studies; Prayer Groups; Meditation Groups; Book

Discussions; Social Issues; Service Groups; Wom-

Our Lord places a high value on children and youth and so do we. As a church committed to excellence in ministry, Faith UMC strives to provide ‘safe sanctuary’ for all God’s children. We are continually seeking ways to improve and implement the best practices to protect the ministry of our congregation, our students and our volunteers in order to nurture their growth in faith.

On Saturday, October 6th our Church Board approved revisions to Faith UMC’s Safe Sanctuary Policy.

We thank Joe Shipman, our new Safe Sanctuary Ministry Group chairperson, and Gary Jones, past chairperson, and everyone who has served on this team for their work in updating our Safe Sanctuary policy. To view a copy of our current Safe Sanctuary Policy, please contact the church office.

Are you our next partner in ministry? There are still many opportunities to serve: Rocking little ones in Faith’s nursery, preschool teachers & helpers, shepherds & 2

nd adults for

elementary and youth Sunday School, Wednesday Night Faith Connections leaders & helpers, Adult Small Group, Prayer Group & Sunday School leaders, behind the scenes preparation, etc. Prayerfully consider how God is calling you to make a difference in the

lives of our children & youth! “We will tell the next generation the praise worth deeds of the Lord, His power, the wonders He has

done.” – Psalm 78:4

Over the last several weeks we have been exploring through our stewardship series how it is that God in Christ bears fruit in and through us for the sake of the world and for the sake of the kingdom of God. Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches; those who abide in me, and I in them, bear much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5). Fruit characterizes the life of the Christian steward. It is interesting to note that, in this passage above, Je-sus did not say, “You should bear fruit.” He stated that when we abide in him, it follows naturally that we will bear fruit. Paul explained to the Galatians what that fruit is: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:25-26). As children of God, we have this fruit because his Spirit lives in us. We do not bear fruit as a result of our own efforts. Our response to the Spirit is a response to the call of God upon our lives. The fruits that we share, our resources of TIME, TALENT and TREASURE, with the church are based up-on how we discern God calling us to use those gifts. We discover God’s will through his word and through prayer. As Paul prayed for the Colossians, we, too, can ask God “to fill [us] with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding . . . in order that [we] may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work . . .” (Colossians 1:9-10). God has plans and uses for our lives. When we abide in Christ, we will be fruitful. We will discover and follow his plan, and we will use the gifts he has given us in ministry to the people of the world. Thank you to all who have turned in their Commitment Cards indicating your discernment of God’s call up-on your life in the use of your TIME, TALENTS and TREASURES. For those who have not yet completed their Commitment Cards and/or turned them in to the office please consider how it is that God is calling you to use the gifts which he has given you.
