  • Lyle's Lines

Are you ready for spring? I’m going to guess that the vast majority of us are ready, especially after the cold weather

we had this February and March. April has been different: not setting records for cold, but

also not consistently warm either. One of the difficulties of spring (April and May especially) is its variability. It can

be warm one day and cold the next. Today the sun can be shining brightly and tomorrow it can be gray all day

long. Spring does seem to be a season for changes!

Of course there are changes occurring all around us. It was only a few weeks ago and I saw nothing but brown and

gray as I looked out the windows. Now – well the grass is certainly changing (daily it seems) and I’ve seen some

bushes and trees beginning to bud. The changes are beginning to happen. And if you’re like me, those changes

    are welcome and eagerly anticipated.

But there are also some negative changes that happen to us sometimes. One of the unpleasant changes I’m

experiencing is new aches and pains as I get older. (I won’t bother you with the boring details.) I’m also not happy

about the continued loss of hair and the diminishing eyesight that are becoming more and more evident with each

    passing year.

Of course there are other negative changes to be considered besides the physical ones of my body getting older.

Each year it appears that humanity becomes a little more depraved. People seem to be less forgiving and helpful

than they were in the past. I hear more and more about acts of terrorism.

But in the midst of all these negative changes I am reminded of some GREAT news – we have an unchanging God

who loves us and is with us! Allow me to give you some words of comfort as we deal with so much change in our

lives. Malachi 3:6 tells us, “For I, the Lord, do not change.” Or hear what the author of Hebrews says in 13:8,

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.” And if you are feeling unloved, hear Psalm

103:17, “The steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.” And maybe today you’re feeling that

God has lost control and that the world is doomed. Then hear God’s message from Isaiah 14, “As I have planned

so it shall be.” and from Isaiah 46, “I am God; there is no one like me…I will accomplish all my purpose."

Change is happening all around us, and many

of those changes can be frightening and

discouraging, but know that we have a God

who changes not! As we hear again and again

throughout the Old Testament – God is a rock!

    Build your life upon Him!

  • THRIVENT NIGHT WITH RED WINGS The local Thrivent Chapter (#30722) is hosting a night at the Red Wings on Friday, June 5, 2015. Tickets include a pre-game meal AND admission to the game. Prices are $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 4-12. Children under 4 are free. If you wish a ticket for the game only (no meal) the cost is $4. Please sign up for tickets in the church office (you will need to pay for the tickets at the time you sign up). You need to sign up by Sunday, May 10 if you wish to attend. This event is also a fundraiser for Foodlink. Thrivent asks that each family make at least a $5 donation to Food Link in addition to the cost of their tickets. For more information, please contact Lyle Heggemeier (485-0144).

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT BIBLE CLASS Throughout the month of May there are two adult Bible classes which meet from 9:45-10:40 each Sunday. Please feel free to join either class.

Basics of Christianity For those who are not members of Faith Lutheran Church and wish to become members, this is your opportunity to learn all about Christianity, Lutheranism, and Faith Lutheran Church. For those who are members, this will be a great review of what we believe, AND it will give you a chance to meet some of those who will be joining Faith. If you have questions, please give Lyle a call (485-0144). Fire on the Mountain – This class, led by Randy Longhenry, meets in the

Auditorium. It utilizes Ray Vander Laan materials by the same name and features footage shot in Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula. Ray, in his typical style, demonstrates and instructs us about the Egyptians and ancient Israelites. But more importantly, he also gives us “faith lessons” about what we see that gives us new insight into our faith in the 21st century.

Do You Speak a Foreign Language? We're looking for some volunteers who speak a foreign language and will be available during worship on May 24. If you speak a foreign language (it doesn't matter which one) and are willing to help out during either worship service, please contact Lyle Heggemeier at 485-0144.

  • Germany in Luther’s Steps  The 500th anniversary of the Reformation is rapidly approaching and this tour will visit most of the crucial spots of the Reformation as we recall this historic and world changing event. Some highlights of this September 16-26, 2016 tour are:

    • Berlin, including the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Holocaust Memorial, and the remnants of the Berlin Wall

    • Wittenberg, including the door where the 95 theses were nailed that began the Reformation and the Castle church

    • Leipzig, where Johann Sebastian Bach spent most of his life

    • Erfurt, including St. Mary’s Cathedral (where Luther was ordained) and the Augustinian

Monastery (where Luther was a monk)

    • Wartburg, including the magnificent Wartburg Castle, where Luther took refuge and translated the New Testament into German

    • Prague, including the Castle district, St. Veits Cathedral, and the Hus memorial

    • Rhine Valley – we’ll have our last day of the tour on a Rhine Cruise passing vineyards, castles,

and the famous Loreley cliff. For those who are interested there will also be devotions and studies of God’s Word that were significant to the Reformation. The cost for the tour is $1805, plus the airfare (which is currently about $1000), but the price will vary according to how many people go on the trip and the Euro exchange rate. We currently have 20 who have indicated their intent to join us and we max out at 35. If interested or for more information, please contact Lyle Heggemeier at 381-3970, ext. 14 or at [email protected].

  • What is Taizé? The first answer is that it is a village southwest of Paris, France situated on a hill in the southern Burgundy region. The Taizé Community is a group of men now numbering more than 100 that have chosen a monastic life of simplicity. They live in this quiet village and exist by their own work. Any gifts that are received (including inheritances) are not kept but distributed among needy people. They especially value prayer, both in silence and in song. The Brothers consider music to be an essential part of worship. The short and repetitive nature of their songs gives them a meditative character. The texts express a part of their faith through very few words that are sung over and over. This contemplative type of singing is a means for prayer and listening to God through the meditation and beauty of the sound. We have a number of the Taizé choruses available to us in the With One Voice songbook in our pews. They are simple, yet beautiful. On Pentecost Sunday, May 24, the Senior Choir will sing a Taizé chorus with a solo melody line appearing above the repeating chord structure. The song, Veni Sancte Spiritus, or Come Holy Spirit, was written in 1978 by Jacques Berthier. A soloist will sing the following text above the repeating chords sung by the choir…

Come, Holy Spirit, from heaven shine forth with your glorious light. Veni Sancte Spiritus. Come from the four winds, O Spirit, come, Breath of God; disperse the shadows over us, renew and strengthen your people. Veni Sancte Spiritus.

May it be a prayer that you take with you beyond the walls of our church. Happy Pentecost!! Dianne Christensen Elizabeth Balentine
