15 “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16 But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.” (Matthew 18:15 – 16) We have been blessed to have Rev. Don Staude with us in October to lead our Stewardship drive. In one of his sermons, he brought up a quote from Pope Francis that really stuck with me. “Whoever gossips is a terrorist. He is a terrorist in his own community. It’s as if his words were a bomb that he tosses against this one or that one, and then walks away. This destroys! Whoever does this destroys, like a bomb, and then walks away.” Gossip is one of those things we all do at times. We all want to know what is going on, and being let in on a secret can be tantalizing. But gossip is not okay. Ever. Gossip destroys people and churches. Gossip hurts. And the Gospel writers make it clear that Jesus was against gossip in any form. I have been hearing a lot of rumors and lies lately that are being spread by members of this congregation. I hear of members going to other people’s houses trying to stir up disgruntlement. This must stop. I know we are having a lot of financial issues at Faith right now and this has caused a lot of friction and anxiety. I wish I could say that things will get better. We will have to make some very hard decisions in the near future and we need to be able to work together as a congregation as we “walk through the fire” and move forward. Each one of us has different opinions and ideas about how the church should be run. And just because we state our opinion more loudly, more often, or more forcefully than someone else; that doesn’t make it any more valid than someone else’s. As Jim LaDoux, from Vibrant Faith Ministry, says “All members have a right to express their opinions about the life and ministry of this congregation as long as the words and actions are constructive in nature and help build up the body of Christ.” Heated or secretive discussions in the community or during other church gatherings affects others, even if they aren’t directly involved. Passing along unverified information (or your opinion stated as fact) can be very hurtful and almost always stirs up negative energy. According to our Constitution and the Gospel of Matthew referenced above, if we have differences or conflict with someone, then we should go directly to that person and try to resolve that difference, as a first step. Talk with them. Have a conversation. Be willing to hear the other side. In my personal experience, 95% of all conflicts in which I’ve been involved have simply been a misunderstanding that were easily resolved with direct and honest communication, assuming both parties were willing to be open to resolution. Faith has so many good things going for us – active youth programs, a growing Sunday School, new adult education opportunities, meaningful worship, a staff who cares deeply about the members, numerous small groups who meet regularly, and so much more. Ending a culture of gossip and negativity is not easy to do. But continuing to tear one another down is not the ministry of Christ and the church. And God has given us the gift of reconciliation ~ to forgive one another just as you have been forgiven. We can do better. We must do better. God is always calling you to be a better person, to be the person God created you to be. I am thankful for the diversity of thoughts, dreams and leadership styles we represent at Faith. We are stronger when we embrace our richness of diversity. How will you contribute to the shared ministry of forgiveness and reconciliation at Faith? Negativity Builds Mistrust. 15 “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the

two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16 But if

you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may

be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.” (Matthew 18:15 – 16)

We have been blessed to have Rev. Don Staude with us in October to lead our

Stewardship drive. In one of his sermons, he brought up a quote from Pope Francis that

really stuck with me. “Whoever gossips is a terrorist. He is a terrorist in his own

community. It’s as if his words were a bomb that he tosses against this one or that one,

and then walks away. This destroys! Whoever does this destroys, like a bomb, and then

walks away.”

Gossip is one of those things we all do at times. We all want to know what is going

on, and being let in on a secret can be tantalizing. But gossip is not okay. Ever. Gossip

destroys people and churches. Gossip hurts. And the Gospel writers make it clear that

Jesus was against gossip in any form.

I have been hearing a lot of rumors and lies lately that are being spread by members of

this congregation. I hear of members going to other people’s houses trying to stir up

disgruntlement. This must stop. I know we are having a lot of financial issues at Faith

right now and this has caused a lot of friction and anxiety. I wish I could say that things

will get better. We will have to make some very hard decisions in the near future and we

need to be able to work together as a congregation as we “walk through the fire” and

move forward.

Each one of us has different opinions and ideas about how the church should be run.

And just because we state our opinion more loudly, more often, or more forcefully than

someone else; that doesn’t make it any more valid than someone else’s. As Jim LaDoux,

from Vibrant Faith Ministry, says “All members have a right to express their opinions

about the life and ministry of this congregation as long as the words and actions are

constructive in nature and help build up the body of Christ.” Heated or secretive

discussions in the community or during other church gatherings affects others, even if

they aren’t directly involved. Passing along unverified information (or your opinion

stated as fact) can be very hurtful and almost always stirs up negative energy.

According to our Constitution and the Gospel of Matthew referenced above, if we

have differences or conflict with someone, then we should go directly to that person and

try to resolve that difference, as a first step. Talk with them. Have a conversation. Be

willing to hear the other side. In my personal experience, 95% of all conflicts in which

I’ve been involved have simply been a misunderstanding that were easily resolved with

direct and honest communication, assuming both parties were willing to be open to

resolution.

Faith has so many good things going for us – active youth programs, a growing

Sunday School, new adult education opportunities, meaningful worship, a staff who

cares deeply about the members, numerous small groups who meet regularly, and so

much more.

Ending a culture of gossip and negativity is not easy to do. But continuing to tear one

another down is not the ministry of Christ and the church. And God has given us the gift

of reconciliation ~ to forgive one another just as you have been forgiven.

We can do better. We must do better. God is always calling you to be a better person,

to be the person God created you to be. I am thankful for the diversity of thoughts,

dreams and leadership styles we represent at Faith. We are stronger when we embrace

our richness of diversity. How will you contribute to the shared ministry of forgiveness

and reconciliation at Faith?

ADULT FORUM

Have you ever thought that studying the Bible was too difficult, too religious, too irrelevant or just too long then

you should join the Adult Forum which meets Sundays from 10:25 to 11:05 A.M. We are studying “The Greatest Story Ever Told” using the book “The Story”, which is

easy to read just like a novel. Each session starts with a 10 minute video followed by discussion and each week

we cover a different topic so you won't feel lost if you should miss a session or two. We meet in the reception room across from the church office. Bring your coffee

with you and refills will be available. For more information contact Don or Cheryl Domrath at 684-5127.

Advent by Candlelight Service is Sunday, November 27. We are looking for table hostesses and guests. Please sign up on the sheets in the gathering space. Guests can include members of FLC, family, friends and relatives. All are welcome!

Advent by Candlelight is a special afternoon for women to become renewed and refreshed before the Christmas rush begins. This is an opportunity to relax and refocus on the season of Advent – a wonderful time of waiting and anticipation. In an elegant atmosphere, lit by candlelight, guests are served desert by a table hostess. The program includes uplifting Scripture readings, music and reflections focused on the Advent season.

The Community Dinner has been moved to

Spring. Mark your calendars for Sunday,

March 19, 2017. Look for more details in

February.

After 26 years of faithful service to Faith and our surrounding community we are saddened to announce the demise of our “Chime Master System.” The Lay Ministry Board has researched repairs vs. replacement of the system and felt it would be more financially feasible to replace the system. Replacement parts for our current system are absolute and are no longer made or guaranteed to solve the problem. The cost of a new system is $5,000 with a 7 year chime care warranty and should be ready for use by Christmas. The Board is asking for monetary donations by participating in the “Chime System Challenge”. This will be explained more in detail during a Temple Talk starting the first week in November. So, let’s make a joyful noise and bring the chimes back to Faith Lutheran Church! Sue Riesterer, Joyce Sorenson and the Board of Lay Ministry

Scrip Update

7

It is with deep regret that a very faithful Scrip Volunteer, Dorothy Leischner, has

passed on to spend eternity with the Lord. We will miss her as she was instrumental

in placing orders and entering sales on the computer. She was attentive to details.

If you wish to step in and help us that would be most welcoming. Please call the

office and indicate your desire to help. With the hunting season starting we have Fleet Farm gift cards and can also order

Cabela’s for you. We are currently ordering for the coming holiday season. For groceries we have Piggly Wiggly, Roundy's (Copp's), Wal-Mart, Festival, Rob's

Family Market and Pine River Dairy gift cards. Other gift cards are available from

Kohl's, Target, Shopko, Gap (Old Navy), I-Tunes, and Bath and Body Works. If you wish to purchase items online you can pay by using your Amazon Card.

Maybe you are having some home repairs done and could use Lowe's or Menard's card, we have them on hand. If you are eating at Fast Food places we have

Noodles, Culver's, McDonald's, Cousin's Subs, Subway and Starbuck's. If pizza is

your choice of cuisine then try Papa Murphy's, Little Cesar's, or Pizza Ranch gift cards. If you prefer fine dining we have cards for Autumn Ridge, Seven Lakes, Gill's

and the Packer Inn. Don’t forget about your furry friends! Pet supplies and pet food

can be purchased at Silver Lake Country Store ~ so purchase your Scrip cards from us in denominations of $25 or $50.00. Each week we have gas cards available from

Kwik Trip, Cenex, and Shell in $25 and $50 denominations.

If you wish to order a card that we do not have in stock - we can order it, you pay

for it and it would be in the next week. Remember by using Scrip it is safer than

using a credit card, check or carrying extra cash. So give it a try!

We are happy to announce that some individuals have stepped up and offered to

help sell Scrip on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. They are Trish Olson, Rose Behnke, Susan Hildebrandt, Kerry Schnell and Gail McCulley. Thank you.

During the month of September the person winning a $10 gift card from our drawing was Carolyn Hallberg. If you purchase Scrip you might be the next lucky

winner. Thank you for purchasing scrip and supporting our youth programs here at

Faith as well as the Capital Appeal Program.

Faith Lutheran Church Minutes—September 19, 2016 BOARD REPORTS: Stewardship – Stephanie Mittnacht reviewed the August financial reports. The general fund net income was -$4904.94 and YTD shortfall is -$18,064.96. There is now $40,000 designated as “operational reserve” within the general fund checkbook balance and it is anticipated that we will need to draw from this reserve fund within the next month. In October the general fund will be paying 2/3 of the associate pastor compensation so that expense will be higher. Capital Appeal pledges were back up in August and were sufficient to cover the mortgage payment. Lay Ministry – Joan Pritzl reported that after consideration of alternatives they are recommending that the chime system be replaced. The estimated cost is $4500-$4700 but options with other companies will be researched. Chime system funding possibilities were discussed and will be determined once a decision about the replacement chimes is made. The time for the late Christmas Eve service will be changed to 10:00pm, and the Christmas Day service will remain at 10:00am even though it is a Sunday morning. Evangelism – No report from Jackie. Bryce Larson reported that Hands on Mission will continue to report to Evangelism and is looking for a new chairperson. Parish Fellowship – Jan Mulhaney reported that no meeting was held. Property – No report this month. Christian Education – Bridget Valleskey reported that the Sunday School numbers were very good on the first day. Consideration is being given to establish a youth bible study group for grades 9-12. The Thanksgiving program will involve grades 6-12, and the Christmas programs (12/18 & 12/21) put on by pre-K thru confirmation-age students. In as Much Sunday will be held in conjunction with confirmation students who need to complete a service project. Discussion was had regarding the ornaments typically given out at the Christmas Eve services, as the family who previously provided these is no longer doing so. It was decided that it is a worthwhile service project and Bridget will work on options for having the ornament distribution continue. Youth Ministry –Jim reported that planning is being done for the October 28th Trunk or Treat. Lefse making is scheduled for November 11 & 12 and Jim stressed that this is a multi-generational event with all invited to participate. Endowment – No report as they did not meet. Pastor Erica – The Stewardship Task Force of 6 members has started meeting with Pastor Don Staude. Pastor Staude will be preaching Sundays and Wednesdays beginning October 2nd with October 23rd & 26th being “celebration services” held in Fellowship Hall. The stewardship commitment services will be held on October 30th and November 2nd. Pastor Staude’s program includes the various mailings and he has the Valders Journal doing all the printing. Pastor Nicole –Pastor Nicole thanked everyone for the cards, assistance with transportation, etc. while she was on medical leave. She will be gone for continuing education October 14th – 16th. Both pastors are working on remaining vacation time for this year and will report it to the board when the dates are finalized. Pastor Nicole distributed 2 handouts: Anatomy of a Sick Church – 10 Symptoms to Watch and 10 Warning Signs of an Inwardly Obsessed Church. Board members are to read these and consider where FLC is at in terms of the health of the church. This will be discussed at the October BoD meeting. Youth & Family – Pastor Nicole reported that 10 people helped with the God’s Work Our Hands highway clean-up but only 2 of those were youth. The high school game night at Robley’s was not well attended so plans have been made to take high school youth to Mr. Lucky’s for breakfast on October 2nd instead. Kids Night Out on September 16th had 12 youth participate and they saw a movie instead of going on a hay ride due to the weather. The next Kids Night Out is October 1st from 3-8pm with pumpkin painting and a trip to the Enchanted Forest at Woodland Dunes in Two Rivers. Plans have been made to have supper for 5th-8th grades at church @ 5:30 on the second Wednesday of each month. October 7th and 21st are the Our Lord’s Table communion classes for families, with supper at 5:30 and the class from 6-6:45. October 8th is the communion retreat for 4th graders from 8:30-noon. Youth & Family is continuing to work on details for the October 28th Trunk or Treat along with the trip to Polly’s corn maze and lock-in that night. President’s Report – Brian Ulness shared comments he has received from members regarding various issues. Lengthy discussion was had regarding “anonymous” complaints and how to handle these. It was agreed that anonymous letters will be disregarded. It was suggested that when a complaint is received about the worship service have the person give input regarding what they would like to see as an alternative vs. just complaining about something. New Business –Terry Huske reported on planning for the annual Community Dinner held each year at Faith in conjunction with St. Mary’s, St. Gregory’s, and the Valders Lions Club. Upon motion, the community Dinner will be held on Sunday, March 19th, 2017 @ 11:00am. Respectfully submitted, Kerry Schnell
