From the Pastor

Scripture Readings:

“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (John 12:26).

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15).

Keeping our Focus

Dear Partners in Ministry:

Have you ever felt that life is so full of distractions and that there are such pulls on your time that you have lost your focus? As God’s stewards, our goal is to live our lives for God’s purpose according to his grace given us by the Holy Spirit through Word and Sacrament. Getting our priorities straight and sticking to them is one of the most difficult tasks we face. We are called to be faithful and not misdirected by the world, our flesh, or Satan. “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:14-15).

As I am putting together my items for this September newsletter, it’s only mid-August, but summer is already winding down; fall is fast approaching. Water temp was 88’ over the weekend, and we just got our contract for the fall closing of our pool. The football team was out on the WHS field this morning. Staples and Target and other stores are feeling the rush of “back to school” shopping. In just a few weeks, we’re going to be dodging yellow busses and everyone’s schedule is going to go wild. Here at church, even though the summer calendar has lots of events, the September calendar really gets busy! With all the choices we have, which ones are we going to choose, and to which ones will we say, “Not enough time…?”

It is challenging, but, with God’s help, it is possible to keep God at the center of our busy lives and to keep some of life’s diversions from consuming our time. Because God promises that, when we call on him, he will give us the strength to overcome any temptations, we are able to say “yes” to him and “no” to the temptations of the world. God does not shield us from temptations, but he sustains us while we are facing them. With God’s help, we are able to recognize that much of life is meaningless when compared to the times we spend in God’s Word, prayer, and worship.

We may ask ourselves the question, “Does the way I live my life reflect the importance of my relationship with God?” We may also ask, “Does my faith help focus my life or does my faith get lost in the blur of busyness and day-to-day routine?” Our goal is to keep “the main thing the main thing,” which is to love, serve, trust, and obey our heavenly Father.

In Christ,

Pastor Bodnyk

Prayer Father, we thank you for the gift of life. Please grant us your wisdom so we can see the foolishness of our own ways. Help us, Lord, to use our time wisely so that we may glorify you. Guide us in your path. Amen. ASSISTANCE WITH BEREAVEMENT Many of us find ourselves in the midst of the grief process at one time or another: Loss of a loved one, loss of a job, the divorce process. There are two upcoming workshops that are open to anyone who is in the midst of grief, or wants help to assist someone else.

PATH OF GRIEF is a one-day gathering here at Faith Lutheran, on Sunday afternoon, September 18, from 2 pm until 3 pm. This gathering is covered more fully elsewhere in this newsletter.

JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF is a 6-week series for those who are grieving. It will be held on the campus of Luther Crest (west end of Allentown) on Mondays, Oct. 3 through Nov. 7, from 10:30 am until Noon.

For more info on either of these events, talk to Pastor Bodnyk or contact Lutheran Congregational Services at 710-770-9205.

CONFIRMATION ORIENTATION The first confirmation class for First & Second Year students AND PARENTS/ GUARDIANS will be held on SUNDAY, SEPT. 11, at 9:15 AM (probably in Parker Hall). All young people, 7th grade and older, are invited to become part of the first year confirmation program, which prepares them for church membership. Questions? Contact Pastor Bodnyk or Joanne Gantz-Jalowiecki.

YOUTH ACTIVITY PLANNING MEETING In order to “kick start” our activities for youth this fall and winter, we will be holding a YOUTH ACTIVITY PLANNING MEETING on Sunday evening, Sept. 18, beginning at 6:00 pm.

Youth, from grade 3 through high school, will gather in Blacker Hall, for a time of Zumba and other activities.

Parents and other interested adults will meet in The Gathering Place to talk about some possible activities and their role in our youth programming.

After this initial meeting, we are looking at two groups for our youth:

Third through Sixth Graders Seventh Grade and above

Questions or suggestions? Contact Pastor Bodnyk or Joanne Gantz-Jalowiecki.

THE PATH OF GRIEF Sunday, September 18th

FAITH LUTHERAN 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

This program will be led by Sylvia Havlish. Every

change or choice in our lives includes some form of

hello and goodbye…some sort of loss along with a gain.

We will look at the grief that comes with death, divorce,

unemployment and other important losses that may

impact our life. We’ll look at how it feels and how it

affects our lives and the lives of those around us. We’ll

search together to find meaning in grief. And we’ll look

at God’s Word and coping strategies that will help us

lessen the pain and promote our healing. Please feel free

to invite anyone you know who may be experiencing the

pain of loss. Sylvia Havlish, Bereavement Counselor

and Coordinator of Bereavement Ministries for

2016 “Wheels of Faith”

Car Show and Craft Fair

Saturday, August 20, Faith Lutheran conducted the

8th annual “Wheels of Faith” event under ideal

weather conditions. The pre-registration of cars was

far better than other years, but the total number of

cars was down slightly from last year's 162.

However, the quality of the cars was excellent. 34

trophies were given away based upon voting of

show participants and spectators. There were 27

crafters/vendors showing their items for sale and

most had very good days of selling. Sharon Kinney

and Kathy Owen, new members of the committee,

created a “food court” in Parker Hall where a wide

array of delicious items were sold for breakfast and

lunch. While all accounting has not been completed

at this time, the net proceeds to Faith should

approximate nearly $4,000. Thank you to all who

donated their time volunteering, baking or all the

other tasks required to make this event successful.

“Wheels of Faith” for 2017 will be held

August 19th!

HARVEST HOME AT FAITH SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9 WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are asking all our members, including all of our Sunday School classes, to participate by bringing the following foods to the church by Friday, October 7.

Canned pastas (spaghetti's, ravioli’s, soup (not tomato) boxed potatoes, hamburger helper, pasta sides (rice or noodle), coffee and tea, egg noodles, elbow macaroni, canned vegetables, fruits, jelly, cereal, spaghetti sauce, and baby food are examples of food which are appreciated. The food is shared with the Whitehall Food Bank and our Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. (Please check the dates on all donations to make sure they’re not expired. We cannot send expired food to the Food Bank.) Thank you for sharing with your community-wide family. Although collecting food items for Harvest Home is our main concern, is there anyone out there who would like to bring CORN STALKS, PUMPKINS, GOURDS, MUMS, OR BALES OF HAY TO DECORATE FOR HARVEST HOME? These items would be displayed in our sanctuary for the services, and could then be taken home for your enjoyment. Please call Pat Walschburger at (610) 437-2017 so we’ll know what items will be available to us to decorate. Monetary donations are always welcome. Please make checks payable to WHITEHALL FOOD PANTRY.

“O come and let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!”

-Psalm 95: 1-2

Worship and music are inseparable. The arts are a powerful medium for ministry, providing a vehicle for personal and corporate praise, prayer, and thanksgiving to God. Music speaks what cannot be expressed in words, thus soothing the mind, healing the heart, calming and uplifting the spirit. Music is a gift from God that flows from heaven to the soul. However great or small your talents, there is a place for you in our music ministry. I hope that this helps you to find a way to come out this fall to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Musical opportunities include:

His Kids: (Kindergarten-8th grade) The exciting musical adventure continues! Children have the opportunity to be part of their very own choir. Parents please contact me if your child(ren) is interested in singing. Together we can make this choir a wonderful opportunity for children to become involved in this church as a part of worship. If there is a conflict with sports, dance, etc.,--please let me know, so that hopefully we can work something out, so that they are able to participate. Rehearsals-one night a week (Thursdays 6:00-6:45) Location-Rhoads Room/Sanctuary Ministry-sings once a month during the worship service and special events of the church season

Bell Choir: (7th grade and up) I look forward to more members joining us again this year. Having the ability to read music is an advantage but if you are unable to read music and have an interest in playing, please do not be discouraged; come to a rehearsal and see what it is all about. If you were part of the bell choir last year you need not contact me, as I will count on you continuing playing with us, but if you are a potential new member that would be interested in playing please contact me BEFORE the first rehearsal for the purpose of assigning bells. Rehearsals-one night a week (Thursdays 6:50-7:50) Location-Rhoads Room/Sanctuary Ministry-rings once a month during the worship service and special events of the church season

Senior Choir: (9th grade and up) Calling all who are interested in praising God in song! If you have not been in the choir before and are interested in joining us, please contact me BEFORE the first rehearsal so that a folder is prepared for you. Rehearsals-one night a week (Thursdays 8:00-9:00) Location-Rhoads Room/Sanctuary Ministry-weekly ministry for one (occasionally two) services on Sundays and special events of the church season Special Music: Vocalists and instrumentalists for special musical offerings are welcomed. Solos, duets, trios, and small ensembles are valued anytime, but especially during the summer months. Please let me know if you are interested in sharing your special talent. Instrumentalists: There are Senior Choir anthems that sometimes have an accompaniment part that require various instrumentation (violin, trumpet, flute, drum, clarinet, etc) ; if you would be interested in accompanying the Senior Choir on a particular instrument—please let me know what instrument it is that you play and what level you play at (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

***Rehearsals for all ensembles begin Wednesday, September 7th. Regular scheduled rehearsals WILL be on THURSDAYS (with

the exception of Thursday, September 8th rehearsal moved to Wednesday, September 7th due to my “Meet the Teacher” night at school). If you took a break from music and are ready to come back, if you have never rung a bell or sung in a choir before, or if you have been part of the music ministry here for years; I look forward to glorifying God’s name with you. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at home: [email protected] (subject heading: FELC Music) or at 610-451-8660 (cell/text). Jennifer Kishbaugh Director of Music

CHRISTIAN ED NEWS Welcome Back …. Hope everyone enjoyed their summer. Sunday School begins on September 11, at 9:15 am for all ages.

Bible Babies … This class is for all children from birth to age 2. Parents plan on attending

and observing this ministry. Stories, music, dancing, crafts are all offered – all age appropriate. A project of Bible Babies is collection of clothing for children to toddler size 4. If you have clothing to donate, or are looking for clothing, please check Bible Babies on a

Sunday morning. Although we appreciate donations of other clothing, we ask that they not be given to this class. A list of resources for clothing donations will be posted on the bulletin

board. Classes then start with our Nursery (2-3 year old’s). We ask that they are potty-trained.

Classes follow with Pre-K/Kindergarten and continue to fifth and sixth grade. A project of these classes is the monthly decorative covering of the Pastor’s office door.

At the next level, youth are enrolled in our two-year confirmation ministry. Continue on to our Adult Forum class which offers open discussions on the weekly teachings.

On September 25, the second graders will receive their personal Bible from the pastor during the worship service. This Bible is presented from the members of

Faith, as the child continues to grow in faith through their years at Faith Lutheran.

If more information is needed on our Christian Ed program, see Joanne Gantz-Jalowiecki or

Pastor.
