Gathering MusicFugue in E-Flat Major Camille Saint-Saëns

(from Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat Major, Op. 99, No. 3)

The long-lived Frenchman, Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), had a very slow start to his meteoric career, yet he ultimately became one of the most honored musicians in the history of France. As an organist he was best known for presiding at the large instrument of the Madeleine Church in Paris. This was the church of high society, an impressive monument built in the style of a Greek temple. Though Saint-Saëns was often heard as an organist, the instrument occupied only a small fraction of his attention, for he delved into every musical form and distinguished himself in many other areas, including those as far flung as history and astronomy. The requirements of his church work were fulfilled through his uncanny skill as an improviser. As a result, Saint-Saëns left only a handful of written pieces for the organ, including two sets of three Preludes and Fugues….

…The fugue (heard as today’s Gathering music) opens with a solemn theme in long notes which is soon joined by the more agile counter subject in rapidly turning notes. Saint-Saëns displays a sure grasp of the structural aspects of the fugue as he guides the movement along: its theme is presented upside down as well as right side up. (One suspects even the mighty Bach himself would have approved of the composer’s deft handling of this fugue.) Saint-Saëns also shows off his agile pedal technique with several bars of rapid sixteenth notes for the feet. Toward the end there is a crescendo leading to a grand climax on full organ.

“Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness” Johannes Brahms(“Schmücke dich O liebe Seele”)

At the very end of his life, Brahms turned to the organ for his final compositions, the eleven chorale preludes of Op 122. Although the organ had intrigued Brahms in his youth, he wrote very little for it. The Prelude, a setting of a German communion chorale, is a gentle weaving of two contrapuntal lines accompanying the hymn tune, which is heard on a reed stop played on the pedals.

Six days later, Jesus took

with him Peter and James

and John, and led them up a

high mountain apart, by

themselves. And he was

transfigured before

them, 3 and his clothes

became dazzling white,

such as no one on earth could

bleach them. 4 And there

appeared to them Elijah with

Moses, who were talking with

Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to

Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us

to be here; let us make three

dwellings,one for you, one for

Moses, and one for Elijah.”

6 He did not know what to say,

for they were terrified. 7 Then a

cloud overshadowed them, and

from the cloud there came a

voice, “This is my Son, the

Beloved;listen to

him!” 8 Suddenly when they

looked around, they saw no one

with them any more, but only

Jesus.

POSTLUDE“Vivace” from Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat Major

C. Saint-Saëns

The closing voluntary, the “Vivace” of the Saint-Saëns Prelude and Fugue is a typical French toccata, marked by rapidly swirling figurations for the hands set over a ponderous and massive pedal line. After all the commotion of this frenetic movement, the composer closes it with two simple cadential chords, as if mischievously enjoying the surprise effect on his listeners of this unexpectedly naive conclusion.
