Congratulations to all! This is indeed an extraordinary effort. Furthermore, Mr Hanekom is to be congratulated on a superbly organised “Surf Walk”. These funds are earmarked for accelerated payment of the astro turf loan, the replacement of computers in Mr Erasmus’s computer lab with up-to-date “thin-client” technology and six new spectator stands for the swimming pool area. As the Big Walk target was so handsomely exceeded, we will investigate our “long term dream” of expanding the College’s music wing to incorporate a large sound proof venue which could be used by the cultural department for music, dance and drama. During the latter part of last year, Mr Swart, the College’s Head of Sport and Estate Manager, left Fairbairn College. These two positions have been filled as at 1 January 2014. We welcome Mr Christo van Lill and Mr Janus van Zyl as the Estate Manager and Head of Sport, respectively. Two academic staff members are also welcomed at the start of this year: Miss Arianne Shaw (English) and Mr Xavier Lawrence (CAT).

This newsletter contains information illustrating an extremely busy first term in every aspect of College life: Academics, Pastoral and Extra-mural. The staff and learners have certainly done the College proud this term! I wish staff and learners a restful holiday! B MARCHAND HEADMASTER

Congratulations to Mr Marchand for being elected Chairperson of the Provincial Principals Forum for 2014/2015.

This forum represents all Principals from the nine educational districts in the Western Cape:

Metro North, East, West, Central, West Coast, Overberg and Eden Karoo.

The purpose of the forum is to provide an opportunity to communicate the needs of schools, educators and principals to the Western Cape Education Department, to provide input on national initiatives, to co-operately seek solutions and to share good practice. The forum meets quarterly with The Head of Education and other high ranking Department Officials.

This is a huge honour, and we Fairbairnians wish Mr Marchand all the best for the upcoming two year term.

We also congratulate Mrs De Wet, one of our educators, who will be representing Western Province Action Netball at the up-coming Inter Provincial Tournament in Centurion during the April holiday.

PASTORAL AND DISCIPLINE

Grade 8 Induction and Fun Day Fairbairn College offers an induction programme to new Grade 8 learners. The aim of this day is for the new learners to become acquainted with the layout of the building, to meet their class teachers and for our new learners to practise the College Song. The day is organised by the grade head with the assistance of the RCL-executive body. As in the past, the day began with an ice breaker where the learners had to find information about other learners and record it on a printed handout. All of this had to be done in a short space of time. This activity was followed by various fun events such as 3-legged soccer, rounders, volleyball and pillow fighting. The day ended with a splash in the College pool after the learners feasted on watermelon. Inter House Athletics and G4 Athletics Meetings The staff started earlier again this year with our preparations for the G4 meeting with our early-morning practices. Again it was amazing to see how many learners made use of the opportunity in an effort to live our theme for 2014 – From Good to Great. Our inter-house competition was won by Somerset, but the coveted Spirit Stick went to Grey House with an excellent show of class and flair. The G4 meeting was hosted by Goodwood College. It must be mentioned that they made a huge success of this, their first-ever attempt. Our Athletes did much better this time round and although they came home with only three cups, the reality is that on points, we came a close second to the winners, JG Meiring.

Page 4: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · fairbairn college hugo street, goodwood 7460 telephone 021 591-7117 fax 021 591-0107 email: admin@ ...

Our Athletes must be congratulated on how well they performed; making our efforts to live our theme a reality. Water Sports Our annual Water Sports that follow the ceremony in the hall, was once again a huge success. This event is enjoyed by learners and staff alike. Please follow us on the social networks and see for yourselves how our learners enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to our gifted school photographer, Mr Mellett, for the excellent photos that he has taken at all our big events. Big Walk 2014 In line with our theme for 2014, From Good to Great, Mr Hanekom urged our learners to try and beat last year’s all-time record of R 475 707.07; but not only that, but to see if they could collect half a million rand in the space of eight weeks. As this is a near-impossible challenge, we were not too sure if it was possible or not. As in the past, our learners accepted the challenge and the money-collection process started to gain momentum. On 14 March the process came to a halt with the actual Surf Walk. The bus company, the weather and the tides played along beautifully and the ‘Walk’ happened without any problems. As in all the years before, our learners, our parents and staff must be complimented on how unpolluted the beach and the parking area were when we left. At the time of writing this report, the final amount which was collected was not known. However, here follow’s Mr Marchand’s final report.

Mr D Hanekom HEAD: PASTORAL Representative Council of Learners We congratulate the following learners, who were elected by their peers as representatives on the RCL: GRADE 8: Daniel De Olim, Shazeea Dhansay, Ashton Swartz GRADE 9: Rushda Adam, Stefan Karamanski, Himil Parshotam GRADE 10: Zukiswa Dlagamandla, Aarti Ranchod, Dawood Muller GRADE 11: Aasha Parshotam, Zedré Thomas, Lauren van der Poel GRADE 12: Daniel Bugg, Samantha Gay, Jessica Yang

Page 7: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · fairbairn college hugo street, goodwood 7460 telephone 021 591-7117 fax 021 591-0107 email: admin@ ...

The role of the RCL was identified as follows:

1. To act as Grade representatives. Essentially their role is that of communication

between the Grade and the Headmaster and providing feedback to the Grade,

2. to uphold the ethos of Fairbairn College and

3. to make suggestions and be involved in improvements to the school.

The RCL will be involved this year in several projects, i.e. Santa Shoe Box project; Fairbairn Green project where the RCL will plant trees on the estate as well as recycling tasks. The Grade 12’s are busy planning a time capsule and will examine the spirit and welfare of the school learners. The learners serving on the RCL are a very talented group of learners and I wish them all the best for their projects during this year. Mr P Botes MASTER IN CHARGE - RCL RCL Executive A big thank you to the RCL Executive for their tireless efforts in performing their duties on a daily basis. They form a vital cog in the discipline structure and their input is of immense value. Thank you also to the Head and Deputy Head prefects for their leadership in this regard. Well done to this group on organising the Grade 8 “Fun Day” as well as their assistance with the Grade 8 orientation – both very successful events. Mr M Koffeman DEPUTY HEADMASTER Class Captains At an assembly earlier this term, the Class Captains were officially inducted and were presented with their badges of office. School Discipline Discipline remains one of the cornerstones upon which the College is built, and is a task from which we will not waiver.

Page 8: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · fairbairn college hugo street, goodwood 7460 telephone 021 591-7117 fax 021 591-0107 email: admin@ ...

A few areas of concern: • The number of learners who arrive late for school in the mornings is unacceptable. • A large number of learners do not arrive for their Grade Head Detentions towards the end of the term. These learners are all punished, but I would like to remind learners and parents alike, that the penalty for not attending a Grade Head Detention remains a Saturday morning Detention. • Grooming: Too many learners arrive at school with dirty blazers – these can be machine washed. Many of the blazers have missing buttons – these may be purchased at the bookroom. A reminder to all the boys that they are expected to wear a belt as part of their uniform and also, that all boys are required to be cleanly shaven every day. • Two reminders: Boys’ hair inspection is on the 1st day of term, and girls must wear winter uniform from the start of Term 2. I ask for the co-operation of the learners and the assistance of the parents regarding these matters, and by so doing, maintaining the high standards of the College. Thank you. Mr M Koffeman HEAD OF DISCIPLINE

Founder’s Day Founder’s Day was celebrated on Friday, 21 February 2014. Founder’s Day was once again one of the highlights of the term. We were very privileged and proud to have Mr Leon Rutgers, Circuit 4 Team Manager of Metro-North Education District, as the guest speaker. Mr Rutgers gave a motivational speech to which both learners and teachers could relate. Our learners’ excellent behaviour once again made us very proud. How fortunate we are to be a learner, staff member, governing body member or parent of this fine institution. Founder’s Day clearly is a reflection of the College’s journey from good to great! Mr P Botes MASTER IN CHARGE – COLLEGE CEREMONIES Human Rights Day On Monday, 24 March, we took time in our assembly to reflect on Human Rights Day (21 March). Learners from the Representative Council of Learners serving on the Educator and Learner Operations Management Council addressed the school. Once again our learners were made aware of our history and what happened at Sharpeville. Learners were reminded that rights lead to responsibilities. Fairbairn strives to raise responsible and fair young people who can become responsible citizens of the country. A big thank you to the RCL. Mr P Botes OPERATIONS

EXTRA-MURAL ACTIVITIES

Culture Eisteddfods/Competitions/Other Fifteen of our learners participated in the English Olympiad this term, which is a very challenging and grueling three hour paper. We look forward to the results of their efforts later in the year. We also have many learners who have entered the Tygerberg Eisteddfod in a variety of the arts. They are preparing in the various fields of Music, Song, Art, Drama, Writing and Poetry recitals. They will compete later in the year and we keenly follow their progress. Our quarterly spelling test also took place in Term 1. In1st place we have E2, in 2nd place B1 and 3rd place D1. Well done! A new challenge is being taken up by 5 teams at Fairbairn College this year. The Cape Argus High School Quiz will be entered and again, we look forward to our learners stretching their minds. More detail will follow in future newsletters; watch this space. Miss G Correia HEAD – ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Interact SPAR STATIONERY BUS: Spar collected stationery to be distributed nationwide to less

privileged schools. We supported this project by donating 271 flip files and 180 pens and

pencils.

STOP HUNGER: We joined this organisation in 2011. In 2013 the organisation managed to

pack 21 600 meals. 3000 pre-school children are fed daily.

The Cape Winter Schools’ Campaign is a series of meal packaging events (packathons)

where teams of volunteers from up to 6 high schools get together to package 10 000 –

20 000 meals at a time.

Fairbairn College will host this event on Friday, 22 August and will raise R 2000.30.

Volunteers from our Interact Society will join in this event.

RUYTERWACHT COMMUNITY CENTRE: Our learners and teachers donated bags of

clothing to the senior citizens in Ruyterwacht.

PROTEA OLD AGE HOME: This is a state subsidised frail-care facility, situated in

Goodwood. The home had a Valentines creative morning tea where every resident had the

chance to decorate cupcakes. Our learners donated 36 cupcakes.

BREAD TAGS: This is an ongoing project and we need a million bread tags to purchase a

wheelchair for a person in need.

Page 10: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · fairbairn college hugo street, goodwood 7460 telephone 021 591-7117 fax 021 591-0107 email: admin@ ...

HERNUS KRIEL OLD AGE HOME: This is a state subsidised institution and FBC decided to

get involved in the following activities:

Cleaning of windows = once per term

Waiters at functions = once per year

Cleaning of premises = once per year

Donation of non-perishable food = once per year

A heartfelt thank you to our learners and teachers for their involvement in the Interact Society. Mrs A Steenekamp MISTRESS IN CHARGE – INTERACT Jazz Combo and Orchestra JAZZ COMBO This group of talented learners have mastered a vast number of songs and are now able to play for at least an hour, supplying background music. They did just that at the market day at Elkanah House in Sunningdale on Saturday, 1 March. They provided entertainment for over 200 people who attended the market and everyone enjoyed the performance. They also played a few instrumental numbers at the Grade 7 Information Evening. ORCHESTRA The Orchestra has been playing the hymn at every assembly, including Founder’s Day, since the beginning of the year. This talented group of instrumentalists have also learnt many new pieces and supplied background music at the Grade 7 Information Evening. There are now 16 dedicated members who practice regularly every Monday afternoon and every musician in the school is encouraged to join them. Mrs C Howell MISTRESS IN CHARGE - MUSIC Choir The Choir had a very successful 1st term. We prepared for Founder’s Day and commenced studying the music for the Tygerberg Eisteddfod where the Choir will perform. The Choir’s performance at our Founders’ Day Celebrations of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from G.F. Handel’s Messiah, was as usual, a highlight of the ceremony. A fine tradition that both the Choir members and their audience always enjoy. On Friday, 14 March 2014, the Choir departed with 66 learners and 8 teachers for their annual Choir camp. This year we travelled to Hermanus where the Choir stayed at the Habonim camping site. It was characterised by fantastic food, more than four hours of practice, games, swimming, a group concert and Choir members who never slept. The Choir returned on Sunday, 16 March 2014. The Choir committee would like to thank Ms Marais, Ms Malcolm, Mrs le Grange, Ms Oberholzer, Mrs Crous and her husband, for giving up their time to attend the camp and for buying and preparing all the delicious food. Without your help the Choir camp would not have been possible. We would like to thank Manuels Bus Services for the transport and bringing us safely back and a big thank you to Mrs Howell for making all the camping arrangements.

Lastly, I would like to thank all Choir members for their hard work during this term. We, as teachers, are grateful to work with such talented learners. Mr P Botes CHOIR DIRECTOR Summer Sports

Sports’ Captains Our Summer Sports’ Captains for 2014 are: Cricket – Keenan Blight, Boys’ Waterpolo – Joshua Potgieter, Boys’ Swimming – Jason Cranfield, Girls’ Swimming – Robyn Pinder, Girls’ Waterpolo – Chantel Tittleton, Girls’ Tennis – Samantha Gay and Boys’ Tennis – Aashiq Dalvie. Miss H Van Rooyen Swimming The Swimming season started off with our annual interhouse gala, followed shortly by the first interschool gala that was hosted on home ground. We did very well in this gala, securing a 4th place out of the six participating schools. The following two gala’s were hosted by Parklands and Fairmont. Also in these gala’s the Swimming team showed faster times than the previous year. I would also like to take this opportunity to convey my thanks to our Swimming coach, Lynette Engelbrecht and my assistant MIC, Ms Saayman for spending afternoons next to the swimming pool. Last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you to the social Swimming coaches – Ms Bergh, Ms van der Merwe and Ms de Wet. These teachers help the new swimmers to acquire the important basic skills needed to excel on Swimming. Mrs C Jordaan MISTRESS IN CHARGE - SWIMMING Girls’ Waterpolo Although we started practices a week before school and we did at least two early morning practices a week extra, we still did not manage to win our games. We missed playing Camps Bay and narrowly lost against Bridge House. Our new coaches Graeme Murphy for the 1st team and JP Jackson/Kelly Hill for the juniors are excellent and bring many new skills to our girls. We need to continue to learn and keep fit. Many thanks to our coaches for their hard work and expertise. We look forward to next season! Mrs M Ackermann MISTRESS IN CHARGE – GIRLS’ WATERPOLO Boys’ Waterpolo Although the Water-polo season was very disjointed this term due to all the Friday activities (Gala, Athletics, Founder’s Day), we did honour all our fixtures.

Page 12: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · fairbairn college hugo street, goodwood 7460 telephone 021 591-7117 fax 021 591-0107 email: admin@ ...

At the end of 2013 our senior team “lost” a number of players due to the Matrics coming to the end of their high school careers. Thus the process of rebuilding began. Mr Graeme Murphy, a past pupil and experienced Water-polo player, assisted with the coaching and our boys started playing much more structured Waterpolo. The senior team had one or two very narrow losses with the highlight of the term being a convincing victory over St John’s school (13 – 3). Our junior team players (many playing Waterpolo for the 1st time) are beginning to grasp the game more and look set to becoming a formidable side in the future. We secured the following victories: Fish Hoek (6-4), St John’s (21-1), Bridge House (6-3) and Groote Schuur (6-1). Thank you to the Water-polo parents for your loyal support – we look forward to Term 4 and even better results. Mr M Koffeman MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ WATERPOLO Cricket

A mixed bag of results was produced during this term. The majority of our teams struggled a bit, but improvement is evident in most of our players. We were pleased to see that our U/15B team won more than half their matches and the U/14B team showed good skills development and won a few matches towards the end of the term. Our 1st team also progressed to the Quarter-finals of the Sammy-Bloch knock-out competition but unfortunately lost in that match. We would like to say thank you to Mr Peter Buttner for the sponsorship we received for the 1st team’s new match shirts. Another big thank you must go to our outside coaches: Mr Lee, Mr Docke and Mr Wilkinson, for their efforts and hard work during the term. We look forward to seeing them back at Fairbairn in Term 4. Some very pleasing individual performances: Zolisa Mama: 6 for 21 vs Table View, Carl Lackay: 6 for 30 vs Parklands, Cameron De Hahn: 5 for 9 vs Mitchells Plain and Nazir Mowzer: 5 for 6 vs Mitchells Plain. Mr A Brink MASTER IN CHARGE - CRICKET Girls’ Tennis

Our Tennis girls’ season consisted of a mixed bag of results. Regardless of the score, they always left the court knowing that they did their utmost best. Their ‘die-hard’ attitudes attributed to a few close and entertaining games. We bid farewell to our Matrics who have always been dedicated and a real pleasure to work with. Their enthusiastic spirits will be greatly missed! We look forward to next season with a new young group who show real talent and enthusiasm.

Mrs C Jacobz MISTRESS IN CHARGE – GIRLS’ TENNIS/VOLLEYBALL

Boys’ Tennis

The 1st team consisted of Aashiq Dalvie (Captain), Luke Moolman, Fu-an Ni and Marco Jonkers, who played seven matches in the 2nd league. It started in October last year and we won 4 matches and lost 3. After play-offs we obtained the 6th position out of a possible 8 positions against Northern Suburb Schools. The highlight of the season was our first victory over Brackenfell’s 1st team, whom we narrowly beat by 8 points to 7. This encounter provided us with great excitement and joy! Congratulations guys! The 2nd team consisted mainly of four players: Marco Ribeiro, Mustafa Arif (Captain), Sean Weber and Matthew Williams. They played 4 matches in the 3rd league and won 2 matches, drew 1 and lost 1. The 3rd team consisted mainly of Waseem Fakier (Captain), Craig Sauls, Mahmood-Ali Parker, Matthew dos Santos and Shane Jacobs. They played 6 matches in the 4th league won 4 and lost 2. A group of 20 Tennis players participated and benefited from the excellent coaching of Mrs Rossouw and her assistant coach. Their efforts are highly appreciated. Thanks to our team managers, Mr Schütz (2nd team) and Mrs De Wet (3rd team), for their efforts and dedication over the past few weeks.

Mr T Russouw MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ TENNIS Debating Our senior team debated against J.G.Meiring and won their debate. Simone Cornelius was

voted best senior speaker. Miss Shaw and 6 of our junior learners attended a workshop at

UCT on 15 March 2014. It was presented by the South African Debating Champion.

Mrs A Steenekamp MISTRESS IN CHARGE Winter Sports We extend a hearty welcome to all parents to support our sports teams during the Winter season, particularly on Saturday mornings. During the Winter season, there is always a wonderful atmosphere prevailing at home matches. The Tuckshop is open at the Club House and does a roaring trade in coffee and boerewors rolls. The First Netball team play matches on Thursday afternoons and would also appreciate your support. FINANCES School Fees
