Now that network carriers are expected to begin using the spectrum starting December 5, starting in 46 markets, the FAA plans to issue a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin and an airworthiness directive about the issue, two officials told Reuters, confirming a Wall Street Journal report. FAA Deputy Administrator Bradley Mims wrote in a previously unreported October 6 letter, the agency shares, "the deep concern about the potential impact to aviation safety resulting from interference to radar altimeter performance from 5G network operations in the C-band." An FAA spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday it "continues to engage with other agencies so that aviation and the newest generation of 5G cellular technology can safely coexist." Continue Reading Strategic 5G Cell Site Deployed in Baltimore By John Celentano, Inside Towers Business Editor One of the latest 5G sites being deployed in the Baltimore area is in its final installation stages. Located on a tower on Newkirk Street in southeast Baltimore, the site is distinguished not so much by its size as its unique location. Newkirk Tower gives both mobile network operator and other wireless service provider tenants a critical vantage point from which to serve one of the busiest corridors on the U.S. East coast. The 192-foot, self-supporting tower is adjacent to the heavily travelled I-95 and I-895 interstate highways just north of the entrance to the Baltimore Harbor and Ft. McHenry tunnels. Smart technology could contribute 40 percent of the required carbon emissions savings for the world’s net zero goals according to research from the GSMA, backed by the Carbon Trust. Although the technology is in place, their study shows mobile connectivity and smart technology are significantly underused by energy-intensive industries, such as power and manufacturing. For instance, in the energy sector, connected technology is only used in around 35 percent of solar grids and 10 percent of wind grids globally. "US wireless carrier activity continued at materially higher levels compared to the beginning of the year. Domestically, we produced record services revenue, surpassing our second quarter record, and our leasing and services backlogs reached new multi-year highs at quarter-end. While we expect some revenue recognition from third quarter leasing activity by year-end, contributing to our increased full-year 2021 Outlook, we anticipate the substantial majority will begin to be recognized in 2022." Opposition organizer and Redwood Road resident Emma Hamilton spoke on behalf of the objectors, noting, "We're not arguing that we don't need an improvement in cell service. Sharpe Smith Inside Towers Technology Editor Political leaders and members of the media have stressed the importance of building out 5G wireless quickly. However, it is equally, if not more, important to focus on securing this next generation network, Vinod Kumar, Associate Director of Tata Communications, recently wrote in Forbes Magazine. He outlined three major vulnerabilities of 5G, including increased attack surfaces, a lack of IoT security and dynamic spectrum sharing, as well discussing their mitigations. “5G will be released as an all-software network that can be maintained like any other digital system today,” Kumar wrote. “Because of software’s innate vulnerabilities, the ecosystem of 5G applications could pose a serious security risk, not just to individuals but also to the nation.” Continue Reading USDA to Begin Accepting Applications for Next Phase of Broadband Funding The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will require recipients to provide broadband service at a hundred megabits-per-second for the next ReConnect phase, which will distribute $1.15 billion in funding. Areas are eligible if one out of ten people, at most, can download data at 100 Mbps and upload it at 20 Mbps. On November 24, USDA will begin accepting applications for up to $1.15 billion in loans and grants to expand the availability of broadband in rural areas. USDA has simplified the application process and has expanded its ReConnect Program . According to ComputerWeekly, the report, titled Connectivity and Climate Change, suggests implementing 5G technology across four high-emitting sectors (power, transport, manufacturing, and buildings) to reduce emissions by 55-170 million tons. It also calculated that at least 40 percent of the EU’s carbon reductions (until 2030) could rely on fixed-line and mobile connectivity. These two factors combined could bring the total emissions reduction to nearly 20 percent of the EU’s total annual emissions in 2017, reported ComputerWeekly. By 2027, three years before global emissions will need to be cut in half to stay on track for 1.5ºC global warming, forecasts show global 5G rollout will still only be at around 75 percent. In six years, Europe is estimated to only have 80 percent population coverage of 5G compared to 95 percent coverage in North America and North East Asia. “The EU and U.K. have set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions that will require transformational shifts across society,” said Ericsson president and CEO Börje Ekholm. “This new analysis demonstrates that connectivity, and specifically 5G, is vital to achieving these decarbonization targets.” He noted that it would be challenging to meet the targets unless 5G rollout across Europe accelerates to keep pace with other leading countries.
