Notes from Principal Scott It is hard to believe that we have entered into the second month of 2012, and that we will be at the beginning of the 3rd marking period next week! Our staff has begun to review & reflect on students’ work in preparation for reporting student achievement and will be ready for report card distribution on Friday, February 17th. During the month of February, our Franklin Park students will be celebrating Black History month with activities and projects to raise awareness of the countless Black Americans who have influenced our world. Also, daily announcements, made by our FPS students, will bring to life the notable achievements of African Americans throughout history.
With the success of the PTO Family Reading Night, I would like to invite all families to the PTO Writing Night on February 23rd. Be on the look-out for more information about this event, as well as the PTO Family Movie Night to be held on February 17th. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Administrators’ Recognition Postcards of the Week
In the January Newsletter, I noted that “Students really took ownership of the writing process and were extremely proud to share their work with their teachers, peers, parents and administrators.” Well, I am very proud to announce that one of our students in Ms. Blissett’s Grade 2 class by the name of Rayan Patel published an article in the City Kidz World magazine. Hundreds of students send their articles to the magazine, but only a few are chosen. Rayan‘s interesting article was, “Earth Myth” (Volume 3, Issue 13, Winter 2011). For more information on how to get your child in the contest, go to www.citykidzworld.com. Way to go Rayan!
Math News from FPS Math Coach, Ms. O’Brien
It’s a new year and most people set new goals to be achieved. Math is no different. Set Math goals with your child for the upcoming year. Have discussions on their strengths and weak-nesses. Look over past work and gather data in where to start. Most students at this time are practicing automaticity of their facts. Try gra-phing the data and having your child set goals based on that data! When students know where they are going, they are much more likely to get there!
How much television is OK?
Did you know that having a TV in the bedroom has been linked to lower scores on standardized math, language, and reading tests at school? Also, excessive television viewing among children has been linked to a greater risk of obesity and inappropriate behavior! What can I do instead of watching so much TV?
Math skills are learned through all kinds of play and activities. I’ve included some other activities for you to consider: Putting increasingly more difficult puzzles together Building with blocks and/or Lego’s Using measuring cups and spoons Helping prepare a meal Learning to play Jacks Jumping rope Posting a growth chart on the wall Taking gymnastics or dancing lessons Doing craft activities that involve stringing beads Going to the park and using the climbing equipment
When reading to or with your child, asking questions after a chunk of text can increase comprehension. Don’t look at the questions as having “right” or “wrong” answers. Instead, encourage your child to think of different possibilities for responses. The following questions are samples of the kind that may get the child more involved at a higher level of thinking:
How would this story change if it happened here in our house?
If you acted like the main character did, what would your friends think?
Does the story remind you of any other you have read? Which one? Why? Or How?
Literacy Tips from FPS Literacy Coach, Ms. Diaforli
The Teachers Who Make Magic program will recognize 24 outstanding teachers to receive this prestigious award.
In order to be considered for a Teacher Who Makes Magic Award, a teacher must first be nominated by a superintendent, principal, coworker, or parent. If you would like to nominate your child’s teacher, the nomination form can be found on the following link:
http://www.magic983.com/Other/centraljerseyteachers.pdf
Nominations may be submitted on the Magic 98.3 website, via mail or fax. The nomination period will be open through February 27, 2012.
Way to Go! Second Grader Sahil Patel from Ms. Shah’s class
handdelivered the Sports Section of the
Star Ledger to Ms. Scott, where he pointed out a MP1 Word of the Week, grime, in an article.
Thank you to all of the FPS students for sending postcards our way! It is great to read all of the notes where students use grade level words of the week correctly in context. We look forward to reading many more Principal Postcards! Keep up the good work FPS!
