Rock climbing skills 2016 certificate courses

Spring 2016 / Fall 2016 Apr 13 / Oct 5 Wed LTC, SPS, DPS, WTC Workshop: Advanced Mountaineering Program (AMP13) – Basic Safety System First of 4 climbing workshops open to SC members with prior roped-climbing experience. Today’s indoor evening workshop of 4 hours reviewing ropes, knots, harnesses, helmets, and basic climbing gear will take place in Pasadena. As space is limited priority will be given to participants who commit to all four workshops. Leader: Dan Richter. Asst: Pat McKusky Apr 16 / Oct 8 Sat LTC, SPS, DPS, WTC M/E R: Advanced Mountaineering Program (AMP13) – Belaying 2nd of 4 climbing workshops open to SC members with prior roped-climbing experience. Today at Stoney Point in Chatsworth, focus is on belaying and principles of anchor building. As space is limited priority will be given to participants who commit to all four workshops. Leader: Dan Richter. Asst: Pat McKusky Apr 23 / Oct 15 Sat LTC, SPS, DPS, WTC M/E R: Advanced Mountaineering Program (AMP13) – Rappelling 3rd of 4 climbing workshops open to SC members with prior roped-climbing experience. Today at Stoney Point in Chatsworth, focus is on rappelling. As space is limited priority will be given to participants who commit to all four workshops. Leader: Dan Richter. Asst: Pat McKusky Apr 30-May 1 / Oct 22-23 Sat - Sun LTC, SPS, DPS, WTC M/E R: Advanced Mountaineering Program (AMP13) – Rock Climbing Techniques and Anchors 4th of 4 climbing workshops open to SC members with prior roped-climbing experience. This weekend completes the series of AMP workshops at Indian Cove in Joshua Tree NP and focuses on climbing and anchors. WTC—SNOW TRAVEL SCHOOL

Learn the fundamentals of snow travel. Skills covered include:

Ice Axe Self Arrest Cramponing Rope Travel on Snow Efficient movement on snow Self Care Essential skills for climbing peaks in

the Sierra and high peaks worldwide! Hands on practice and critiques in

addition to stories of past mountaineering experiences by veteran expert guides!

ITINERARY: Course participants may sign up for either or both days. Day 1: Basic Snow Travel: Climbing and descending snow covered terrain, ice axe self arrest, Crampon techniques, rope travel, self care, efficient movement on snow. Day 2: Snow Anchors and Crevasse Rescue: For those planning to climb on steeper terrain or glaciers we offer this day as well. Skills covered include building snow anchors for climbing, belaying, rappelling, self rescue, and crevasse rescue pulley systems.

TIME: We will meet at 8:00 AM and be finished by 4:00 PM each day.

LOCATION: Classes are held in locations between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, depending on snow conditions (determined shortly before class date). An email a few days prior to the class will give meeting location and instructor contact info.

DATES: April 16-17, 2016.

COST: This specially priced course for WTC students and instructors is $180.00 $130.00/day, per per-son. Rentals of ice axe, crampons, helmet, harness, boots and backpacks are available from SMI.

YOU WILL NEED: Be prepared for any type of weather conditions from hot to cold, clear to stormy. Include a versatile clothing layering system, gloves, warm cap, gaiters, lunch, water bottle, boots, ice axe, crampons, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip cream, lunch, water, and a backpack appropriate for carrying the above items. A detailed equipment list with descriptions of each item will be provided upon regis-tering for the course.

2-DAY ROCKCRAFT SEMINAR Saturday and Sunday, April 30 - May 1, 2016 $290 - 20% = $232

If you have never done any rock climbing, or need a refresher, here's where to start. This is an

introduction to the world of rock climbing with an emphasis on safety and fun. The class covers

the essentials of technical rock climbing and is a valuable course for those wishing to pursue

mountaineering.

Day One: Course itinerary: equipment, knots, belaying technique, communication signals, the rating

system, face climbing techniques (protected on a toprope), and rappelling. Classes are taught on low-

angle, moderate rock suitable for novices.

Day Two: After reviewing knots and belaying you'll complete a progression of climbs where a broad range

of more challenging climbing techniques are encountered, including both face climbing and crack

climbing techniques. Protected by a toprope, you'll get personalized coaching from your instructor. Also

includes an introduction to building anchor systems using nuts and camming devices.

Wilderness First Aid Course

Course Description & Certifications:

This Wilderness First Aid Course is made available as a service to WTC students and staff. The 3 day, 24 hour Wilderness First Aid course will be instructed and certified by Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA), and is being offered in conjunction with Adventure Risk Management. (These are private organizations not affiliated with the Sierra Club.) The curriculum will be an expanded version of WMA’s WFA course, intended to specifically satisfy the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s wilderness first aid certification requirements. The course will include certification at the level of Wilderness First Aid, and includes Layperson-level CPR certification, and epinephrine use for anaphylaxis. All certifications are from WMA, and are valid for three years. Note that this WFA certification is NOT upgradeable to the level of Wilderness First Responder. Attendance Requirements:

All students are subject to WMA’s Course Participation Standards, including the requirement for 100% attendance to be eligible for certification.

Date: Friday, July 8 – Sunday, July 10, 2016. Hours: 8 am to as late as 7 pm each day. Course Cost: Course tuition is $349, and is due at registration. Tuition cost includes all texts, materials,

and certification fees. There is a $10 discount for tuitions paid by check. If you would like your course textbook mailed to you pre-course, add $9 to your tuition- be sure to specify this when you register. Make checks payable to Adventure Risk Management.

Location & Amenities:

This course will be held at Idyllwild Pines Camp, located near the town of Idyllwild, CA. Idyllwild Pines Camp is offering optional lodging at the course site: tent or vehicle camping is available for $15/person per night, or dorm-style lodging is available for $21/person per night. In either case, you will have access to bathrooms, showers, and a fully-functioning kitchen where you can do meal preparation and food storage. You will need to notify Adventure Risk Management of your lodging plans prior to the course- payment will be due (via cash ONLY- no check or credit cards) at the start of the course.

Registration: All students must register pre-course. No on-site registration is available! Register at the Adventure Risk Management website at this link: https://adventureriskmanagement.com/wilderness-medicine/enrollment-info/ Under ‘Course Name’ specify ‘Wilderness First Aid’- since this is a specialized format of the WFA course, with differing tuition, you will need to adjust the tuition amount to $349 in the Payment Section. Alternatively, you can obtain a Registration Form from Bob Myers if you prefer to pay your tuition by check.

Deadline: Registrations received within 14 days of the course will incur a $30 late registration fee. Space is very limited- register early to guarantee your space!

Cancellation Requests:

Note that all registrants will be subject to the Adventure Risk Management Registration, Cancellation and Transfer policy as outlined at our website (see link above).

Confirmation: Upon receipt & processing of your Registration Request, Adventure Risk Management will email you Confirmation Materials with complete information including directions and what to bring. Your course textbook will be mailed to the address you have specified in your Registration Request (if you requested pre-course mailing).
