Session Outline • Re-cap on the story of Little Red Riding Hood and how she became suspicious when she noticed ‘Grandma’s’ BIG eyes, ears and teeth. Do they know their 5 senses and which body part is associated with each sense? • Explain that they are going to learn about UK species which have super eyes, ears and teeth which helps them to survive in their habitat. • Preparation: Print out the hunt cards & hide them in your environment. • Print out the recording sheets. • You may wish to make a simple map of your outdoor area & mark where you have hidden the clues if you wish. Differentiation: HA- Can they read/ remember any of the facts about the species? LA- Prompts and help as needed with finding and reading the hunt cards. Extension: Can they name/ find out about any other creatures with super senses/ big features? Lesson Objectives Children will learn about some UK species with large features and super senses.     Bats

    • Bats have the best hearing of all land mammals.

    • They have huge ears compared to other body parts.

    • They are nocturnal and so do not rely on their sight: they use

    ‘echolocation.’

    • This means they make high-pitched squeaks and listen for echos to

    tell where an object is.

    Dragonflies

    • The dragonfly, has some of the most amazing eyes in the animal

    world.

    • They are so big that they cover almost the entire head.

    • Their eyesight is superb; they can detect colours, and are

    particularly sensitive to movement, allowing them to quickly discover any potential prey or enemy.
