  • Session Outline

    • Re-cap on the story of Little Red Riding Hood and how she became suspicious when she noticed ‘Grandma’s’ BIG eyes, ears and teeth. Do they know their 5 senses and which body part is associated with each sense?

    • Explain that they are going to learn about UK species which have super eyes, ears and teeth which helps them to survive in their habitat.

    • Preparation: Print out the hunt cards & hide them in your environment.

    • Print out the recording sheets.

    • You may wish to make a simple map of your outdoor area & mark

    where you have hidden the clues if you wish.

    Differentiation:

    HA- Can they read/ remember any of the facts about the species?

    LA- Prompts and help as needed with finding and reading the hunt cards.

    Extension:

    Can they name/ find out about any other creatures with super

    senses/ big features?

    Lesson Objectives

    Children will learn about some UK species with large features and super senses. Children will know which body part is associated with each sense.

    BIG EARS and SUPER HEARING

    Bats

    • Bats have the best hearing of all land mammals.

    • They have huge ears compared to other body parts.

    • They are nocturnal and so do not rely on their sight: they use

    ‘echolocation.’

    • This means they make high-pitched squeaks and listen for echos to

    tell where an object is.

    BIG EYES and SUPER SIGHT

    Dragonflies

    • The dragonfly, has some of the most amazing eyes in the animal

    world.

    • They are so big that they cover almost the entire head.

    • Their eyesight is superb; they can detect colours, and are

    particularly sensitive to movement, allowing them to quickly discover any potential prey or enemy.

    STRONG TEETH

    LIMPETS

    • A limpet is a type of marine creature found clinging to rocks at the

    seaside.

    • Teeth of tiny limpets are the strongest biological material yet

    discovered.

    • They could be used to build the cars, boats and planes of the

    future. 

    • Their teeth are so hard that a diamond saw has to be used to slice

    them.
