Preparation • Prepare all of the resources ready and decide upon your pirate themed activities. Main Activity •Split the children into pirate teams (the number in each will be dependent on your group number.) To do this, you could give all children a coloured counter as a pirate coin. Blue = sneaky sapphires; red = rogue rubies; yellow = golden grubbies. Picture cards for groups are provided if you wish to use them (scroll down.) Their first job is to make a pirate camp or pirate ship using natural resources such as logs, branches and sticks. (If you have little resources, you may wish to provide some such as crates, tarpaulins and string. See Natural Shelters/ Role Play Shelters/ Experiential Building for tips and ideas.) Every time you shout, “Ahoy there me hearties, batton down the hatches!” the children have to return to their pirate ships/ camps and pretend to defend themselves from robbers! Once they have built their pirate ship/ camp, other Pirate role play jobs and activities could include: making a team pirate flag/ climbing a pirate ‘lookout tree’/ making pirate telescopes from cardboard tubes/ aiming mud cannonballs at a tree target/ walk the plank/ tying scarves together with reef knots (See Knots & Lashings: Reef Knot) to rescue men overboard/ scrub the decks or plank/ making captain’s rum/ using metal detectors to find pirate coins (See Outdoor Skills: Using a Metal Detector) / creating stick men crew from natural materials (See Invention & Investigation: Stick Man) / pirate swords from sticks (See Invention & Investigation: Stick Sword). • Remember to allow the children a chance to role play with the objects they have made during the pirate themed activities, and also to come up with their own pirate games and activities. Differentiation: HA- Can the children use their imagination to create their own pirate role play games and activities? LA- Prompts for role play.
