THERE are many ex-
amples of exceptional
relationships be-
tween man and ani-
mal. Express found
one such relation-
ship, in this case be-
tween James and
John.
Much like theBibli-
cal brothers James
and John, who fol-
lowed Jesus Christ,
James Mokoena from
Kestell is followed
everywhere by his
good friend, John.
The interesting
thing is that John is a
five-month-old sheep.
According to 38-
year-old James, it is
unlikely that his best
friend John will end
up on the dinner ta-
ble, as James is a
strict vegetarian.
James does con-
cede that normally
sheep are used for
meat and providing
wool, but he insists
that this will not be
Johns ultimate fate.
After Johns
mother gave birth to
him, she refused to
feed him and I decid-
ed to take him in he
has been by my side
ever since, he says
with a smile.
James says as both
he and John are vege-
tarians, John eats
everything he does.
He eats almost
everything, but his
favourites are cook-
ies, bananas and
grass, says James.
His love for ani-
mals, James explains,
and the gift of being
an animal whisperer,
began years ago after
he had broken his leg.
I was an athlete
and one day I broke
my leg and because of
the injury I began
spending time with
my animals, he said.
James describes
his pet sheep as hu-
man, hence he gave
him a human name.
The sheep does eve-
rything that he does.
He sleeps in the
house, walks around
withme in the streets
and eats the normal
food that a vegetarian
eats. He also loves
driving in a car.
I have a friend by
the name of Oom
Roos. John loves be-
ing in his car, his fa-
vourite seat is in the
front.
Another animal
that James has adopt-
ed, a small male wild
goat named Jonas,
unfortunately does
not get along with
John.
James explains
that Jonas is still
young and is intimi-
dated by John.
James says his
wish is to see John
grow to take part in
animal shows as this
will not only display
the bond that they
share, but also create
an opportunity for
him to receive a little
incentive.
The jolly sheep
loves eating, is scared
of dogs and James
sayswhenhe needs to
answer the call of na-
ture, the sign that he
gives is to stand mo-
tionless. James will
then open the door for
him to go relieve him-
self outside.

friends.

EXCELLING schools in the Thabo Mofut-
sanyane District were last week rewarded
with state-of-the-art science and computer
laboratories.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshek-
ga and her Free State counterpart, MEC
Tate Makgoe, together with the Kagiso
Trust and the Beyers Naud Foundation,
officially handed over the laboratories and
libraries to nine deserving schools.
The nine schools, eight high schools and
a primary school, were handed the much-
needed equipment following their improve-
ment in the gr. 12 pass rates.
According to the Kagiso Trusts ICT
director, Darryl Lund, the aim of the
project was to improve the quality of
education in the country and not only in
the Thabo Mofutsanyane area.
Last years improvement of the prov-
inces matric results, that placed the
province in the top three best-performing
provinces in the country, made the Kagiso
Trust take note, Lund explained.
Meanwhile, Motshekga explained the
importance of creating not only a top-class
environment, but also creating a clean
environment for learners. She best ex-
plained the quantity and quality of the
education as that which has not only
improved, but exceeded that target that
was placed.
She expressed a feeling of achievement
for she had always wanted to improve the
quality of the Outcome-Based Education
Curriculum in the country.
In each of the nine schools that received
the revamp, the computer laboratory was
fitted with 40 computers while the library
was fitted with new books and the science
laboratory with all the apparatus needed
by the learners to do their experiments.
The first school at which the minister
handed the equipment over was the
Thokoana Makaota High School that uses
the theme Hustlers Never Give Up in the
Mabolela Village. The minister opened the
handover at the school where she encour-
aged learners to focus on school and
advised them to leave the streets, because
they would not take them anywhere.
Dineo Mofokeng, who is a gr. 11 Life
Science pupil at the school, expressed her
feelings of joy.
I am happy that the department did this
for us and one of the things that we are
grateful for is that we no longer have to
walk kilometres to use the universitys
apparatus and we will also not disturb the
students, she said.
John Xaba, a Life Science teacher at the
school, expressed his feelings of happiness
after the handover took place.
I cant explain how I feel about what
the Kagiso Trust did for us. The science
stream here in our school had been
struggling since 1990, but today we will
struggle no more, said Xaba.
According to the Makgoe the department
and the Kagiso Trust together raised R180
million to kickstart the programme that
started in 2008 and though it seemed like it
was preferential, the aim was not based on
that, the aim was based on improving the
standard of schools in the province and the
criteria used for that was based on the
pass rate of the schools.
If the pass rate improved, like it did for
the nine schools, then the trust and
department will start from scratch in
building the laboratories and renovations
needed.

BUSINESSMAN Kenny Kunene has
quit his leadership positions in the
newly-formed Economic Freedom
Front (EFF) with immediate effect, it
was reported last week Wednesday.
Kunene told The Star newspaper
that he was resigning from his posi-
tion on the central command team as
well as his role as the head of cam-
paigns, mobilisation and special
projects, after considering a lot of
things.
He added that there were still deci-
sions to be made on the way forward.
Obviously I would like to see eco-
nomic freedom being realised and I
will remain an economic freedom
fighter for ordinary people.
The direction I am taking from
now will determine if I will still be ac-
tive in the EFF, he told The Star.
Kunene, known as the Sushi
King, was seen as a crowd-pulling as-
set for former ANC Youth League
leader Julius Malemas new political
party.
He said Malema had accepted and
respected his resignation, and that
he still believed the party had a future
even when I am not there. News24

THE Free State Legislatures
Multi-Party Caucus through the
Office of the Speaker will be
hosting a dialogue for women in
the Mangaung Metro.
The caucus is aimed at promot-
ing good governance through
developing programmes that
facilitate public access, involve-
ment and information in a more
comprehensive and integrated
manner.
The caucus comprises all
women MPLs, including mem-
bers of the Executive Council as
well as a designated representa-
tive of the Speakers Office.
Womens Month is politically
significant for the Free State
Provincial Legislature in the
context that it provides opportu-
nity, space and time to women
members of the Legislature to
work together in an impartial
and a political manner to address
social issues affecting women in
the province.
The mandate of the caucus is
to focus on concerns which are
pertinent to vulnerable groups.
The activity creates a platform
for vulnerable groups from
various sectors of Free State
society to meet and enter into
dialogue on the achievements
and the challenges encountered.
The caucus thus becomes the
listening forum for vulnerable
groups to relate their experiences
directly to Members of the
Legislature.
This serves as an important
consultative forum for mutually
beneficial dialogue between
policy-makers and the vulnerable
groups.
The theme for Womens Month
is Dedicated Women influence the
course of History.
Last years event focused on
social issues affecting child-head-
ed families and old women, with
the target being women and girls
residing in rural or far-flung
areas in the province, where
services of government are, due
to various reasons, not easily
accessible.
The women and girl-child
constitute the vulnerable sector
of the population and those in
rural or far-flung areas are the
most disadvantaged.
The 2013 Womens Month event
focuses on ensuring effective and
efficient participating of young
women in the economy, assisting
them to form cooperatives.
It will also encourage young
women to use public participa-
tion channels to voice their
concerns, learn and know how
the Legislature functions as well
as promoting safety and health
care for young women.
The caucus this year focuses
on young women there will be
a dialogue of young women
focusing on five key priorities of
government for 2013 as men-
tioned in the State of the Nation
Address by the president in
February, namely education and
skills, health, creation of decent
jobs, crime, corruption as well as
rural development and land
distribution.
Various departments such us

NEWS
WE have come to the end of Womens
Month that has been celebrated with much
deserved fanfare.
The message has been unambiguously
sent to South African men of all races to
treat our young girls, sisters, mothers and
grandmothers with respect befitting a
human being.
Nevertheless, allow me to register my
utter disgust with the provocative and
violent nature that characterises a South
African man of our time. There is a
perturbing statistic that every 17 seconds a
woman is raped in South Africa.
Census 2011 reported that there are
about 26 582 769 female people in South
Africa, meaning women far out-number
men in South Africa. Surprisingly, the
South African prison population is con-
spicuously male with our country being
ranked seventh in the world as far as the
highest number of people serving prison
sentences is concerned.
In his speech on Womens Day, Pres.
Jacob Zuma said, In the period between
2010 and 2013, the courts have imposed
1 114 life sentences to those found guilty of
serious crimes. Men of varying ages are
serving time for heinous crimes such as
murder, armed-robbery, rape and assault
just to mention a few.
As a man, I would naturally be expected
to be chauvinistic in thinking and my
orientation. I could have chosen to ignore
the anger that dominates mens psyche
because Im one of their own.
By virtue of being a man, I am less
likely to be at the receiving end of mens
gruesome behaviour. Game rangers
unanimously agree that in the animal
kingdom males that assume the role of
fathers are the ones that provide food and
protection for their entire clan.
They inculcate discipline and ensure
that none trespass into their territory.
Out of a sense of moral integrity, I have
therefore chosen to highlight and explore
some of the most brutal incidents that
were carried out by South African men
across the racial lines.
Making international headlines in
November 2010, 28-year-old Anni Dewani, a
British tourist on honeymoon in Cape
Town, was murdered in cold blood by
three South African men.
The three men, Xolile Mngeni, Mziwama-
doda Qwabe and Zola Tongo, were alleged-
ly hired by Shrien Dewani to orchestrate
and execute his wifes murder. The three
South Africans have since been handed
hefty sentences and are already languish-
ing in prison, while the state awaits
Shrien Dewanis extradition to account for
murder of his wife to whom he was
married for just two weeks.
Another case that portrayed men as
monsters was the bodily mutilation and
gang rape of Ina Bonnette by three men
who were hired by her estranged husband
on 3 January 2012.
The man dubbed The Modimolle
monster, Johan Kotze and his three
accomplices have been sentenced to life
imprisonment by the Pretoria High Court
on 17 July.
A glamorous international model, Reeva
Steenkamp, was shot dead on 14 February
by her boyfriend at the Silver Wood Estate
in Pretoria. A Paralympic gold- medallist,
Oscar Pistorius admitted to shooting four
times through a bathroom door thinking
the elegant model was an intruder. Of all
days, Steenkamp died on Valentines Day
when she was supposed to be romanti-
cised. The state is yet to prove if
Steenkamps murder was premeditated.
A high level of education and profession-
al fields has not shrugged off the monster
mentality from which most of our brothers
suffer. Statistically, the South African
Police Service recorded 64 514 cases of
sexual offences in the 2011-12 period. The
immoral trend of male teachers raping and
impregnating teenage school girls contin-
ues unabated.
Innocent girls are coerced into sexual
relations with their teachers and are sadly
left with fatherless children. Health
professionals such as male nurses have
recently made front page headlines in
Limpopo and Eastern Cape for sexually
preying on terminally-ill patients.
In lieu of redeeming lost souls, a number
of pastors is incarcerated for raping and
indecently assaulting their congregants,
while sangomas are behind bars for doing
the same to those seeking spiritual
guidance.
Mido Macia, originally from Mozam-
bique, was hand-cuffed to a police van and
dragged along a stretch of road for parking
his vehicle on the wrong side.
He suffered severe injuries to his body
that allegedly led to his death in police
custody.
Macia was a victim of nine male police
officers stationed in Daveyton. The South
African Anxiety Society has reported that
60% of suicides are committed by men in
the security cluster, particularly the
police.
Big up, to all women in these demanding
professions who perform their duties
immaculately. They remain committed to
their professional ethics, not using stress
and work-related pressure as an excuse for
barbarism.
As for Vavi, you dont sleep with a
married woman and cry political conspira-
cy! Consensual or not, you dare not
dishonour somebodys wife like that and
be diplomatic about it.
To all men who have turned our beloved
South Africa into a breeding ground for
monsters, please refer to Michael Jack-
sons 1991 hit song when he mellifluously
sang Heal the world; make it a better
place for you and for me and the entire
human race.

NAKA DROTS, the Toyota Cheetahs coach,
believes that his side can bounce back after
back-to-back defeats took the gloss off their
opening-day win against the Golden Lions.
The Cheetahs suffered their second loss of the
Currie Cup Series at the hands of the Sharks in
Bloemfontein last Friday, going down 15-18 in a
closely contested affair. Before that fixture,
Drotsks troops lost 14-15 to the Western Prov-
ince in Cape Town a fortnight ago.
The Cheetahs will be hoping to return to win-
ning ways at the expense of the Griquas, whom
they meet at the Free State Stadium on Satur-
day.
It is important not to let themood drop after
such disappointing defeats. We will bounce
back, because the spirit and focus in the team
is good.We have to win all our home games and
climb up the Currie Cup ladder. It is going to be
a dog fight for all six teams.
You are going to win close games, and you
are going to lose close games, Drotsk told Ex-
press. The Senekal-born mentor said the Chee-
tahs had themselves to blame for Fridays loss.
Tonight I thinkwe lost against ourselves. We
made too many unforced errors where we had
knock-ons on the attack. I thoughtwe played too
literal as well. But full credit to the Sharks for
defending well.
We should have played more directly. In the
first half we scored two tries by playing directly
and, for some reason, in the second half we
played more literally and were inept on the at-
tack. That cost us the game in the end, a clearly
disappointed Drotsk said.
The coach attributed his sides failure to not
scoring in the second half. Against the Western
Province theCheetahs led 14-10 at the break, but
theywenton to lose thematchby14-15. Ina simi-
lar scenario, the Cheetahswere 15-13 up against
the Sharks going into the half-time, but they al-
lowed the visitors to register an 18-15 come-
from-behind victory.
This is a great concern for us. In all three
games we had a comfortable lead at halftime
two of them we lost in the last minutes. It is im-
portant for us to score in both halves of the
match to win games. We will fix that problem
at the training sessions. The one thing we need
to learn, is to know how to finish the games.
All Currie Cup games are going to be 50/50
calls. Those who want to finish first or second
on the log need to know how to win these 50/50
games.
Kick-off, on Saturday against Griquas is
scheduled for 15:00.

EACH YEAR the Sasol New Signatures Art
Competition raises the bar from previous com-
petitions and this year notable improvements
were seen from the works submitted.
Artists have experimented with new media
and multiple modes of expression to convey
messages showing true innovation, lifting the
quality of work received.
For the past 24 years, Sasol, in partnership
with the Association of Arts Pretoria, has
played an influential role in unearthing artistic
talent in South Africa through the New Signa-
tures Competition. The competition allows en-
trants to enter theworld of extraordinary artist-
ry while also giving them the platform to make
their artistic signatures known.
Thisyear,wealso sawan increase insubmis-
sions that reflect peoples personal experiences
and bring pertinent social, economic, political
and psychological issues to the fore. With the
awards ceremony steadily approaching, the
judges had their work cut out for them as they
chose the winning piece from a pool of 97 art-
works, explained Peter Binsbergen, national
chairperson of the Sasol New Signatures selec-
tion panel.
The New Signatures Art Competition aims
to inspire creativity among emerging artists,
while simultaneously increasing SouthAfricas
appreciation for the arts, saidRichardHughes,
Sasols sponsorship manager.
The overall winner will receive R60 000 and
the opportunity to showcase a solo exhibition at
the Pretoria Arts Museum next year. The run-
ner-up and five merit award recipients will re-
ceive R20 000 and R5 000 respectively.
Winnerswill beannounced todayat thePreto-
ria Arts Museum and the Sasol New Signatures
Art Competition Exhibition will be open to the
public from tomorrow until 13 October.
Also exhibiting during this period for the first
time toSouthAfricanart lovers is IngridBolton,
winner of the 2012 Sasol New Signatures Art
Competition.

Pastor Willie Norris
MARK 10:28-30: Peter said to him, we
have left everything to follow you. I tell you
the truth, Jesus replied, on one who has left
home or brothers or sisters or mother or
father or children or fields for me and the
gospel will fail to receive a hundred times
as much in this present age homes, broth-
ers, sisters, mothers, children and fields and
with them, persecutions and in the age to
come eternal life.
Two things that Jesus sorted out for
Peter. The first being the blessings to
come to a person. The reward of what the
person sacrificed in giving to Jesus and
the gospel. This ranges from money,
material possessions and relationships
being sacrificed. Jesus said a hundred fold
will be returned to the one who will
sacrifice.
These returns are far more than the
person interested by giving it to Jesus and
the gospel. The promise is as relevant as it
makes it clear that it will be here on earth
while living here on earth.
The second promise that many does not
want that runs with the blessing is
persecutions.
These persecutions which are mostly
there in an unjust way. But they are there.
You also need to understand that Jesus
will not leave you if you are in that state
where you are persecuted.
He will help you, even if it seems like he
is not there for you.
You have to know that in everything,
Jesus loves you. Nothing can change his
love for you.
Remember, he will always be with you
and he will bless you.
Godwill always bless you

WE all would like to live in
a better world. But how do
we achieve it? The efforts by
individuals and society,
mainly based on a material-
istic approach, have not
been able to bring about a
better world.
The creation of a peaceful
and just society, in which
people of diverse back-
ground cooperate and live in
harmony, will require a
re-orientation of individual
and collective goals and
transformation in attitudes
and behaviours.
According to the Bah
Writings, the betterment of
the world can be accom-
plished through pure and
goodly deeds, through
commendable and seemly
conduct.
The emphasis is placed on
purity of intention and
sincerity, when one per-
forms good deeds. That is
when greatest results are
achieved.
One can hardly imagine
what a great influence
genuine love, truthfulness
and purity of motives exert
on the souls of men. But
these traits cannot be
acquired by any believer
unless he makes a daily
effort to gain them . . .,
confirm the Bah Scrip-
tures.
Acquiring knowledge and
insight into the Holy
Writings is the first step
towards personal transfor-
mation, as studying the
Creative Word of God in
depth helps the individual
to obtain a more adequate
understanding of Gods
Revelation and to translate
these teachings into reality.
The knowledge acquired
is then applied to effect
individual and collective
transformation, leading to
the betterment of the
world.
Bahullh says: O
people of God! Do not busy
yourselves in your own
concerns; let your thoughts
be fixed upon that which
will rehabilitate the for-
tunes of mankind and
sanctify the hearts and
souls of men.
This can best be achieved
through pure and holy deeds,
through a virtuous life and a
goodly behaviour.
A moral person, therefore,
would consciously and
actively be engaged in
performing actions that
promote not only individual,
but also social transforma-
tion.
God has given us free will
and all human behaviour is
an expression of our capaci-
ty to choose and make
decisions.
We have the choice
between justice and injustice
and the power both to do
good and to do evil.
We have the capacity to
override the needs of our
lower nature in keeping with
ethical requirements. We
also have the capacity to
control and channel our
natural drives and urges and
to transform them into
human perfections.
Our moral and spiritual
advancement is crucial to
our well-being in both this
life and the next. As
Bahullh counsels:
Possess a pure, kindly and
radiant heart, that thine may
be a sovereignty ancient,
imperishable and everlast-
ing.
Belief in the immortality
of the soul and in an
all-knowing judging God
ought to provide us with
sufficient motivation for
moral conduct.
According to the Bah
Writings, to accept the
Messenger of God in His
time and to observe all the
ordinances revealed by Him
are the two inseparable
duties which each soul is
created to fulfil: . . . the
foundation of success and
salvation is the knowledge of
God, and that the results of
the knowledge of God are the
good actions which are the
fruits of faith.
Our daily efforts to put
into action the teachings of
God with pure intentions
will result in our own
spiritual development and
the transformation of the
society around us.

UP-AND-COMING youngsters from the HTS
Louis Botha will be given the opportunity to
be coached by the former Golden Lions men-
tor, John Mitchell.
Mitchell, who is famous for guiding the
Lions to Currie Cup victory, will descend on
the HTS Louis Bothas sports grounds in
Bloemfontein to put young rugby players
through their paces today.
Powerade, the official hydration sponsor of
the Vodacom Super Rugby Series, commis-
sioned Mitchell to devise a programme to help
both school coaches and players to excel in the
competitive and exciting game of rugby. He
will impart his wealth of rugby knowledge and
experience on coaches and players via the
Powerade Performance Sessions.
Mitchells programme is designed with
Powerades Power Through philosophy in
mind, giving coaches the necessary tools to
develop their athletes. The philosophy focuses
on finding strength, conviction and belief in
those moments of low performance, self-doubt
or discouragement.
Trivern Chetty, brand manager of Sports
and Energy at The Coca-Cola Company, said:
It is the role of a coach to motivate, inspire
as well as to provide useful information on
training regimes to assist their athletes when
facing challenges, which they will do at every
level in their sport.
He added: We want to inspire and motivate
young individuals to make sure theymaintain
their forward momentum and achieve their
goals. We know that coaches also play the role
of mentor and guidance counsellor and we
want to empower coaches who will in turn
inspire the players.
The HTS Louis Botha was one of 40 schools
from a total of 100 across the country that won
a Powerade Performance Session with Mit-
chell.
Coaches that come into contact with
Mitchell during these campaigns will also be
able to stay up to date with peak performance
by means of signing up for the communi-
cations developed by the ex-All Blacks and Li-
ons coach himself.
A select group of coacheswill receive a train-
ing tips newsletter twice a month from
Mitchell. This communication will take the
form of skills training content, pictures and
links to video demonstrations from the ses-
sions as well as great competitions to partici-
pate in.
In total, Mitchell will teach approximately
2 400 rugby players from 40 schools about what
it takes to Power Through from school boy
rugby to Super Rugby and beyond. He will be
demonstrating new techniques, drills and give
guidance on other performance related aspects
of training, like hydration, before, during and
after matches.
Meanwhile, the rugby legend will have
similar sessions in the Northern Cape at the
Horskool Diamantveld and Northern Cape
High School tomorrow and Friday
respectively. All three sessions start at 15:00.

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC have
described todays Absa Premiership
clash against Polokwane City at
the Peter Mokaba Stadium in
Polokwane as a must-win fixture to
end their winless streak.
This comes after Celtics poor
start to the league campaign after
losing 3-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns
at home, before being bundled out
of the lucrative MTN8 Cup by
BidVest Wits who humbled the
Mangaung side by 3-0.
Phunya Sele Sele star Vuyani
Ntanga said they wanted to win
against City to boost their confi-
dence ahead of the derby match
against Free State Stars that will
be played at the Free State Sta-
dium on Sunday (15:00).
We have recovered from those
defeats and are now focusing on
our game against City on Wednes-
day. We are going to treat it like a
cup final. We will settle for
nothing else but a win, Ntanga
said.
It is important for us to start
winning matches early in the
season.
Scoring and conceding goals
have been our main problem, but
we have rectified our mistakes at
training.
Well make sure that we score
goals and keep it water-tight at the
back, he added.
Ntanga said their focus was not
yet on the up-coming Free State
Derby.
We are taking one game at the
time. Our focus is on City and
well shift it to Stars after 90
minutes. All I can say, is that we
are determined to collect six points
in a matter of days.
Tonights match starts at 19:30.
