OUR LITURGY

In todays first reading, Peter proclaims that Jesus is the one anointed by God as judge of all, and that, through Jesus, all people can receive forgiveness of sins. The second reading exhorts those who believe in Jesus to keep their minds on heaven. The Gospel tells of the discovery that Jesus is not in his tomb, and the confusion that results.

FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE

Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised. This is what the angels say to the women who go to the tomb early in the morning on that first Easter Sunday. Imagine their surprise as they come to the tomb expecting to perform the traditional respect to the dead body of Jesus, and find that His body is not there. Think of the thousand of questions going through their minds as they were told He has been raised up. Where did He go? What does it mean He was raised up? And how did this all happen? Questions and no answers except the statements made by the angels. In another Gospel account for today, we see that there is no direct answers to the questions, but those who came to the empty tomb began to understand. They began to believe without seeing, they remembered what Jesus said, they remembered the events of the Transfiguration, and the Last Supper. Peter and John see the burial clothes and they knew that this was a deliberate act, and not one done by grave robbers or those who tried to disprove everything. They begin to understand (although not fully) that this was a deliberate act of the Son of God. This belief would soon be verified as Mary Magdalene saw and spoke to the risen Jesus, just as two disciples would walk with Him on the Road to Emmaus, even though they did not at first recognize Him. This belief is verified every time we gather as the Living Body of Christ to pray, worship, and celebrate the Sacraments. We see the Risen Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, in the Gospel, and in each other. Today we relive the events of the first Easter, not only as we hear the story, but through our renewing of our Baptismal Promises. Baptism is the Sacrament that contains all of what Easter is about. In the Waters of Baptism, we die with Christ on the Cross and we rise with Him to new life; the new life of the Resurrection, the new life set free from sin, death and darkness. In Baptism we become one with Christ and each other, that is how we can see the Risen Lord in each other. Rejoice today, tomorrow, and for the whole fifty days of the Easter Season. Allow the Resurrection of Christ to change your life every day, and share the joy of the Resurrection with everyone you meet. This Friday Evening at 7 PM we will celebrate a very special Evening Prayer before the Exposed Blessed Sacrament with Voices of Faith Choral Group with fellowship following in Carew Hall.

Next Sunday, Divine Mercy Sunday, at 3 PM we will observe a Holy Hour before the Exposed Blessed Sacrament in honor of the Divine Mercy, all are invited! On behalf of Fathers: Boyle, Rene, Thomas and Peter Liu, and our Deacons: James Altonji, Joseph Califano, Michael DeBellis, Frank DellAglio, Michael Devenney, Bill Dobbins, Joseph Dougherty, our Seminarian Mr. Michael Duffy, and the entire staff of Saint Josephs, we wish you and your family a very Holy and Happy Easter! We close with todays Opening Prayer: God our Father, by raising Christ your Son you conquered the power of death and opened for us the way to eternal life. Let our celebration today raise us up and renew our lives by the Spirit that is within us. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Happy Easter Fr. Mike

Outreach Ministry

Feinstein Matching Grant - This foundation will match all donations made to the Outreach Program during the months of March and April. The more of a donation you send the more Feinstein money Outreach will get.

Dear Friend: My name is Alan Shawn Feinstein. For the past 12 years, I have been giving away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country. This year, I am doing it again...whatever you donate to OUT-REACH, I will add money to it. The more you give, the more of my $1 MILLION theyll get thanks to you! Why am I doing this? Because I believe each of us was put here on earth to do what we can to help those in need. This letter is written because we feel that YOU believe that, too. This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country. Your donation makes you a partner in it with me! Im only here to give you some support and to remind you of this: That all that will matter to us someday is what we did while we were here to help those who needed us. Please give whatever you can I will gladly add some of my money to yours. Thank you for sharing my heart, and the hope that-someday-no one will ever go hungry. Sincerely Yours, Alan Shawn Feinstein

Respect Life

The headline reads California shifts from embryo to adult stem cell research New York should too. Heres the story: Five years ago, the Bush administration restricted embryo-destructive research funding. Californias Institute for Regenerative Medicine was established to challenge that administrations stifling of progress. And so, the California government, in 2004, passed the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative (Proposition 71). That Proposition gave $3 billion for research to find medical use for stem cells harvested from human embryos killed by the procedure. The Institutes work over those five years bore no fruit. Now the Institute is quietly diverting funds from embryonic to adult stem cell research. Already dozens of treatments and some cures have been produced for maladies from spinal cord injuries to Alzheimers and type 1 diabetes. Kathleen Gilbert, in California quietly shifts fruitless embryo research to adult stem cells, LifeSiteNews.com; 1-29-10, wrote some of the above and the following: Although scientists and pro-life advocates have denounced the dead-end science of embryo research for years, the political and ethical furor surrounding embryonic research appears to have obscured the undeniable superiority of adult stem cells track record. Not only have adult stem cells already produced dozens of treatments, but embryonic stem cells have been proven prone to multiply out of control, causing tumors and are less easily cultivated into specific types of tissue than their adult counterparts. New York should follow. If not a matter of mercy for unborn children, at least fiscal responsibility and concern for directing money into something that actually works should force New York to discontinue spending on random stem cell research and save millions by not following through with the Empire State Stem Cell Board plan to pay women for eggs to be used for lethal research. The cannibalization of human beings is so dear to them they cant stop themselves even when the evidence screams that it doesnt work Some good news. The Geron Corporation had planned treatments of spinal cord injuries with injections of embryonic stem cells. Coming from destroyed human embryos, the cells were to help nerve fibers replace myelin a fatty insulating substance that often gets stripped away when spines are injured inhibiting the bodys ability to transmit sensory signals. HOWEVER, The FDA shut down the trials after finding that cysts developed in animals who had received the treatment. Beyond moral objections to embryo destruction to obtain stem cells, there is an additional concern, and that is the development of uncontrollable tumors (called teratomas).

On this Easter Sunday, this little poem is my gift to you: The Coming of Spring Hyacinths shove their shining snouts through the bare earth, And buds break out of the naked branches. Can you smell the air? This is the astonishment called Spring. This is the thaw. When your dull winter breaks in a rush of joy -And you are always young.

The Easter Lamb The paschal Lamb symbolizes the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ.

~ The Lamb of God ~ is the Christian symbol of the Passover Sacrifice of Jesus Death to Life.

It is to be placed on the front window or storm door of the home, witnessing to what we believe as Catholic Christians:

The symbol of the Lamb remains in a prominent place from Easter Sunday, until the Easter Season is completed ~ 50 days later ~ on Pentecost Sunday (May 31, 2009). It is taken down on this day.

He has risen! Alleluia!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

YES. CHRIST MY HOPE IS ARISEN! HAVE MERCY, VICTOR KING, EVER REIGNING

The perennial hymn of joy, the Sequence Hymn of Easter Mass, expresses our faith in the Son of God who rose from the dead that first Easter morn, the hope of every Christian who embraces His life in His Church and the confidence we place in the Eternal One who is risen and reigns forever as the victorious Son at the right hand of the Father of merciful love. Even in the midst of darkness and sin, even in times of trouble and sorrow, even when the Church and our beloved Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, are being vilified by evil forces and false accusations aimed at undermining the Church, we are one in our proclamation of faith, our cry of hope, our embrace of the cross which leads to the everlasting Sunday of Easter glory. This Easter, as every Easter, we proclaim the triumph of light over darkness, the victory of life over death, the fulfillment of a promise made by God that can never be extinguished, never be destroyed. This Easter, at the Saturday eve Vigil and the Sunday Masses, you, the good people of our Diocese, will gather in our parishes to join with me and my brother priests in celebrating the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Cate-chumens will receive the Easter sacraments, candidates will be admitted into full communion and you and I will renew our own baptismal commitment through the Easter Creed that expresses what together we believe. As we hear Gods Word pro-claimed, we spiritually join Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb and we believe with Peter and John and the whole Church that He is risen, He is truly risen! As we gather around the altar of sacrifice, we enter into the holy of holies, where Christ, the eternal Son of God, is once again the priest who offers Himself, the victim slain and the Head who call us, His Body, to share in His sacramental body and blood and become ever more the one body of Christ on earth. Ours is the greatest gift anyone can ever receive: life in Christ. His life unites us and makes us His Body, the Church. We are one and we must always strive to maintain that unity and witness it to the world. No one who gathers with us to celebrate Easter should ever be an instrument of disunity. No one who is united to Christ can be in disharmony with His Church. For He who is risen has broken down the barriers and made us all one in Him. With all my heart I embrace each and every member of this Church at Rockville Centre spread across Long Island. With all my heart I thank God for you and the witness of life and love you give to our brothers and sisters in our towns and villages. With all my heart I pledge to you my service as your bishop and brother, your priest and your friend. We are the People of God. We are One in the life He gives us. CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS TRULY RISEN! AMEN! ALLELUIA!

Divine Mercy Sunday 3 PM Holy Hour — April 11, 2010

During the course of Jesus' revelations to Saint Faustina, He asked that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter Sunday. The liturgical texts of that day center around the Sacrament of Penance, the Tribunal of Divine Mercy, were well suited to the request of Our Lord. This feast was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II at the canonization of Saint Faustina. In a decree dated 23 May 2000, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated, Throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine

benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come.
