    Iceland has unspoilt

    nature and majestic

    mountains, and some

    of Europe's most

    powerful and awe-

    inspiring waterfalls.

    Circumnavigation of Iceland

    the land offire and ice

Iceland has lava and ice, long dark winters and summers lit by the MidnightSun, as well as vast expanses o unspoilt nature lying at the doorstep o highlymodern urban communities. Icelandic traditions dates back to the ancient sagas, and the olk stories are ripe with mysticism, elves and trolls. Join MS Fram on

the Circumnavigation o Iceland, and enjoy the nature, history and daily lie othe Island o Sagas.

Your journey starts in Reykjavik. Norwegianand Celtic settlers arrived in Iceland dur-ing the late 9th and 10th centuries A.D.The place was named Reykjavik (meaningSmoky Bay) ater the columns o steamthat rose rom the hot springs in the areaand made such a proound impression onthe original settlers. MS Fram departs inthe evening, and we strongly recommendthat you explore this delightul town beoredeparture.

Grundarjrur, situated on the Snellsnespeninsula, has a diversity o landscapesincluding lava and rock ormations, glaciers, volcanoes, and hot and cold springs. It isalso rich in bird lie. In short, it is a placewell worth exploring! Stykkishlmur hasbeautiul and well-preserved old houses inthe town centre. Here you have a chance toenjoy various interesting museums as wellas the spectacular view rom the churchover Breiajrur.

Get closer to the teeming birdlife onFram's Polarcirkel boatsWe visit several small settlements and vil-lages, amongst them Flateyri and sajrur. To get close to the teeming bird clis wetake the Polarcirkel boats and go to Vigurwhere pufns, eiders, guillemots and Arc-tic terns are abundant. We also spend amorning in the Hornstrandir area wherethe Hornbjarg cli is one o the greatestseaowl habitats in Iceland. The noise othe birds might be overwhelming at frst, but seeing that many birds up close is anincredible experience. In Siglujrur youcan spend a ew hours enjoying the rug-

ged landscape, savouring the peace andtranquillity.

History, culture and wild coastallandscapeAkureyri is close to many o Icelands mostrenowned natural and beautiul areas, andthe town itsel is a popular destination.

Ater the visit here we start sailing towardsGrmsey. We use the Polarcirkel boats toreach this green and grassy island, prob-ably best known or its proximity to theArctic Circle which actually cuts across theisland. Hsavk is the oldest settlementin Iceland. The Museum here houses amaritime museum, whale museum, natu-ral history museum, olk museum, districtarchives, photograph archives and an artgallery! The Langanes peninsula is aboutas wild as coastal Iceland gets, and is alsoknown or its rich birdlie.

During our voyage we also call at Seyis-jrur, distinguished by its Norwegian her-itage and Eskijrur, a charming seasidevillage. A walk around this towns historicalbuildings and piers is recommended. Theattractive seaarers lodge, Randulssjhshas remained unchanged since 1890 andshows the ways o yesteryears fsheriestrade. You can even try tasting the sharkand dried fsh that is still produced there.

Glaciers and volcanoesWhile visiting Djpivogur you have to makesure you see the Eggin Gleivk sculptureconsisting o 34 giant eggs representing

the variety o Icelands birdlie. And inHn you have a chance to see the big-gest glacier in Europe, Vatnajkull. The

Vestmannaeyjar ( Westman Islands) is agroup o 15 spectacular islands and about30 rock pillars. The islands were ormed byvolcanic eruptions and are well vegetatedproviding a habitat or countless birds, including pufns.

We will try to visit Surtsey and Heimaey aswell. Surtsey is a volcanic island, ormedby an eruption starting 130 metres belowsea level; it reached the surace in 1963.Heimaey is the largest o the islands here, and was one o Icelands most importantfshing ports. Magnifcent bird clis domi-nate this volcanic island. As we return toReykjavik, we see the end o this journey.

    Iceland, Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen

climate VoyaGeIcelandic annals rom 1194 contain the phrase Svalbard undinn which meansSvalbard ound. Modern day historians say that this could indicate that the

Vikings had successully navigated to Svalbard rom Iceland, Greenland or JanMayen or that they had reached the ice-edge o the Arctic Ocean. In 1882, FridtjoNansen went on his frst oceanographic expedition to this area. This inauguralexpedition triggered Nansens interest in the oceans currents, making him thefrst and historically most prominent oceanographer in the world.

With this historic backdrop, MS Fram setsout on this expedition rom Reykjavik in Ice-land towards Svalbard. While crossing theArctic Ocean we may encounter a variety olarge bodied marine mammals and be ol-lowed by the sailors riend, the NorthernFulmar, a bird rom the same amily as thegraceul albatross. There will also be manylectures rom our Expedition Team aboutclimate change during this voyage and alsoan on board auction where the proceedswill be given to relevant climate charities.

Following the global ocean conveyorbeltOur northbound heading takes us acrossthe open ocean. MS Fram is now headingin the same direction as the phenomenonknown as the global oceanconveyor belt. This belt is aconstantly moving systemo deep-ocean circulationdriven by temperature andsalinity. The phenomenonis immensely important orthe global climate and howtemperatures are distributed on the globe.

On our way to Svalbard we will learn moreabout why it is such a symbol or climatechange and why this place is considereda global thermometer.

Visiting one of the most isolated islandsin the worldOn the crossing between Iceland andSvalbard we hope to make a stop at one othe most isolated islands in the world. TheNorwegian island o Jan Mayen is home tothe northernmost active volcano on Earth,Beerenberg. It is located where the NorthAmerican and the Eurasian tectonic platesmeet, and is one o the highest mountains

in Norway. In the 16th century Dutch whal-ers operated rom Jan Mayen and today aNorwegian weather station accommodatesa ew plucky individuals throughout theyear. Other than having mail dropped roma plane occasionally, visits to Jan Mayenare extremely rare, especially rom tourists.MS Fram and her crew will, as one o the

very ew operating in this water, attemptto make a rare landing on this most exoticArctic island. This will be an experienceo a lietime.

Science and history in Ny-lesundSituated at 7855N, Ny-lesund is one othe worlds northernmost year-round com-munities. The settlement s roots lie in coalmining. In the heroic age o exploration thiswas the starting point o several historicalattempts to reach the North Pole. Nameslike Amundsen, Ellsworth and Nobile arestrongly linked to the place, and you canstill see the airship mast to which Nobilesdirigible Norge was moored beore itsdeparture on the frs t trans-polar ight. To-day, Ny-lesund is an extremely important

campus or scientists romleading research institutessuch as Alred Wegener Insti-tute and the Norwegian PolarInstitute. In 2005, a state othe art marine laboratorywas opened to acilitate thefeldwork o marine biolo-

gists and oceanographers. There is also a

small visitor centre in Ny-lesund.Experiencing the wildlifeDepending on ice conditions we will at-tempt to cross the 80th parallel. Keep youreyes open or walrus, whales and Polarbears. Isjord is a raction more hospitablethan the savage Arctic Ocean with giantbird clis. Alkhornet is home to specieslike Brnnichs Guillemot and numerousKittiwakes. Seabirds are an important linkbetween the marine and the terrestrial oodchain. We will see evidence o the lush ar-eas below the cli er tilised by the birds.

Its then time to leave one o the last largeEuropean wildernesses behind. Our arrivalin Longyearbyen signals the end o thisClimate Voyage.

Visiting the settlements on SpitsbergenThe voyage starts with a night in Long-yearbyen. This Norwegian settlementis a unique little town. The inuence othe arctic environment is obvious and itis also a surprisingly cosmopolitan town, with art galleries, pubs, long wine listsat restaurants, stores and a mini-mall. Itis oten called an antidote to modern-day lie and is a prime destination oradventure travellers. Still, the history andheritage rom the frst coal miners can beseen everywhere. We will visit the Russiansettlement o Barentsburg. This companycoal mining town has beenRussian since 1932, and is stillhome to about 200 people. Here you can explore the ex-otic collection o old Russianarteacts and architecture, visit the Pomor Museum or soak up thereal Russian atmosphere in the local pub.Ater a trip into Kings Bay, the largest jordin the North West coast o Spitsbergen, wedock at Ny-lesund. Si tuated at 78 55 N,this is one o the worlds northernmostyear-round communities. Previously a coal

mining community, it is now an advancedhigh Arctic research station. A number ocountries run their own national researchstations here, and activity is particularlyhigh in the summer.

History and cultural heritageThe North West Spitsbergen NationalPark is scattered with islands, jords andbeaches and has a long history o explora-tion. When Willhelm Barentz frst sightedSvalbard in 1596, this was the land he saw.The name he gave to this new land wasSpitzbergen, reecting the sharp andsteep mountains in the area. In Magdalene-

jord youll experience a hugely importantsite o cultural heritage: a whaling stationrom the 16th century, including a grave-yard o whalers that died during the frstoil gold rush. Later on we also visit KappLee, a wonderul site with many exam-ples o cultural heritage rom all eras oSvalbards exploration.

Fjords, glaciers and Polar bearsDuring this voyage we hope to exploresome o the most spectacular jords oNorthern Spitsbergen. Deep inside thegiant Woodjord system we fnd the enor-mous and ast moving Monaco Glacier. Inront o this crevassed glacier ront there isalways a lot o brash ice and larger piecesthat have calved o. Nearby we fnd theJotunkjeldane thermal springs, the north-ernmost documented thermal springs onEarth. MS Fram will then make her waythrough the amous Hinlopen Strait sepa-rating the east coast o Spitsbergen and

    the large ice-capped island oNordaustland.

The eastern part o Svalbard ismainly divided into two largenature reserves. Combined

they represent one o the last large, mainlyuntouched wildernesses in Europe. Transit-ing the large jord east o Spitsbergen willgive us spectacular views o the islandseast coast. In the distance we will seehundreds o glaciers and mountains and iwe are lucky well meet some o Svalbards

marine mammals like seal and walrus. Here, the rozen Storjord makes the perecthabitat or Polar bear. Saying that, wher-ever there is ice there are great chanceso spotting Polar bears during this voyage!

Finally, Isjord is the most prominent jordsystem in Svalbard. We will spend a gooddeal o time exploring both its outer andinner parts. As this is one o our last days, our intent is to fnd a scenic jord armand arrange a arewell dinner in the mostbeautiul Arctic surroundings. Every goodExplorer voyage must come to an end, andwhen we arrive back in Longyearbyen we

    must bid you arewell.

The halfway point between Spitsbergenand the North CapeBjrnya is very isolated and the southern-

most island o the Svalbard Archipelago. Itis only visited by Hurtigruten once a year. The only indigenous land mammals are aew Arctic oxes. Despite its name (BearIsland) it is not a permanent residenceo Polar bears, although many arrive withthe expanding pack ice in the winter.Ringed Seal and Bearded Seal live in thewaters, but the ormerly common walrusis now a rare guest. Today, the islandsonly inhabitants are the sta o the Nor-wegian meteorological and radio stationat Herwighamna. The journey starts with the fight romBuenos Aires to the province o Tierradel Fuego and the southernmost city inthe world Ushuaia. With our bow point-ing south, we set our course through theBeagle Channel, across the Drake Passageand onwards to the Great White Continentitsel, Antarctica.

On board lectures at seaThe Drake Passage is where the Atlanticand Pacic meet the Great SouthernOcean, creating the Antarctic Conver-gence, where the warmer waters o thenorth meet the colder, denser, less salinewaters o the south. As the colder watersinks, a mixing occurs that brings nutri-ents to the surace and makes the areaparticularly rich in marine lie. In additionto some great chances to spot magnicentalbatross species and other seabirds, thecrossing eatures a series o lecture ocus-ing on the history, environment and wildlieo Antarctica.

Crossing the Antarctic CircleThe Antarctic continent is an endless whitewilderness ull o overwhelming vistas onature. On this special trip, we plan tocross the Antarctic Circle (lying at latitude66 33' 39''), one o the ve major circles olatitude that mark maps o the Earth. Theequialent line o latitude in the northernhemisphere is the Arctic Circle. While inAntarctica, we will also attempt to land onseeral sites and hope to isit the distinc-tive ring-shaped Deception Island, HalMoon Island, and Yankee Harbour, an oldbase o operations or early sealers. All

o these islands are a part o the SouthShetland Islands. Its also possible thatwell call at the Gentoo penguin rookerieson Cuverville Island and Neko Harbour.Paradise Harbour, the Lemaire Channeland Petermann Island are some other greatlocations that we hope to visit i weatherand ice permits. Port Lockroy is an old

British base with a museum, and WilhelminaBay is eeding ground or whales and seals. The Antarctic Sound oers spectacularviews o tabular icebergs and glacial land-scapes, and Brown Blu has a distinctiverock ormation.

Old research stationsOn Detaille Island we nd the ormerStation W. The personnel here were doingwork in surveying, geology and meteorol-ogy but the base was evacuated when thesea ice and weather made relie by shipimpossible. Horseshoe Island occupiesmost o the entrance o Square Bay on thewest coast o Graham Land. Horseshoe Is-land is an important example o a relativelyunaltered and completely equipped Britishscientic research station o the 1950s.It was established in March 1955 by theFalkland Islands Dependencies Surey asStation Y, and was closed in August 1960.

On land, our expedition team will explain

what you see and ensure that we do ourbest not to disturb the nature and wildlie.Weather, wind, and ice conditions will de-termine our programme and our schedule.Saety is always the rst priority and thenal itinerary will be decided during theoyage.

The voyage rom the Antarctic Peninsula toUshuaia at the southern tip o Argentina isroughly 950km. During the oyage north,we will continue our lecture series andrecap our experiences o Antarctica. Withour minds still buzzing rom the experi-ences o this incredible journey, we return

to civilisation and reach the end o ourvoyage at Ushuaia. Ater debarkation wetranser you to the airport or your charterfight to Buenos Aires.

Weather, wind, and ice conditions willdetermine the exact nature o your pro-gramme and schedule. Saety is paramountand the ships captain will decide thenal sailing itinerary during the voyage.Thereore every voyage is unique and alladvertised routes, by the very nature o theregion, can only be indicative. Below youwill nd a selection o some o the possiblelanding sites in Antarctica depending onyour oyages planned itinerary.

Deception Island, South Shetland IslandsOne o the highlights o the South Shet-lands, Deception Island is a distinctivering-shaped volcanic caldera, a portion o

which collapsed and created a navigableopening into the fooded interior. Thenatural harbour within includes Whal-ers Bay, home to an abandoned whalingstation known as Hektor, as well as aderelict British base.

Half Moon Island, SouthShetland IslandsStaggeringly photogenic and blessed withsome o the most spectacular Antarcticscenery imaginable, Hal Moon Island isa glittering gem amongst these islandtreasures. Its serrated and creviced clisare home to a large colony o chinstrap

penguins, as well as Antarctic terns, kelpgulls, snowy sheathbills, Wilsons stormpetrels and seeral species o seals.

Yankee Harbour, South Shetland IslandsEarly sealers in the area used YankeeHarbour on Greenwich Island as a re-quent base o operations, its remarkable

setting providing a natural sae haven orthe sailors. Remnants o those early dayscan still be seen lit tering the shoreline, but the big draw or visitors here is thelarge colony o Gentoo penguins, whosenumbers are estimated to be around 4,000breeding pairs.

Cuverville IslandSituated in the scenic Errera Channel,Cuverville Island boasts the largest knowncolony o Gentoo penguins in the Antarc-tic Peninsula. The narrow Errera Channeloers a spectacular passage to and romCuverville, as icebergs become trappedand grounded in the nearby shallows.

Watching rom the observation decksas our navigators weave the ship care-ully between the icebergs is as excitingas being surrounded by the throngs onesting penguins onshore.

Neko HarbourNeko Harbour with its Gentoo pen-guin colony lies nestled in Andvord Bay,surrounded by the mountains and highglacier walls o the peninsula. Namedater a actory whaling ship rom the early1900s, Neko is one o the rare places in thisarea where you may land on the Antarcticmainland.

Paradise BayThe harbour is paradise not only in name, but in splendour and scenery as well.Protected rom the winds o the nearbyGerlache Strait, Paradise Harbour oersanother rare opportunity or a mainlandlanding and some o the nest vistas the
