• During this Explore presentation you will learn more about the Bachelor of Web Media (BWM) degree.

• The BWM degree is the only

of its kind in the Gulf!

• You will learn about what Web Media is all about and what it is like to work in the Web Media industry.

• You will also learn about some

of the jobs on offer for Web Media graduates.

What is the Web?

• It is all about communication and connecting people, online, through the Internet.

• It’s about what people see: graphics, animation,

video, sound, text.

• It’s a virtual space: Web content must be easy to navigate and easy to use

• It is also a business tool (used for eCommerce, eMarketing –buying and selling or advertising

things online)

• The Web is a giant computer made from 300 million connected computers: programming

Web 2.0

When the Web began, people could only search for information online. They could not make any comments or give their opinions. This was known as Web 1.0 Today, we have Web 2.0 – people can post their own material online. They make comments on social media, they can make videos, share information and put their own material on the Internet.

Business on the Internet The Internet has made it easier for businesses to advertise their products or services. There has been a huge increase in online advertising and e-commerce sites, where people can buy and sell items: Examples are:

The Internet even has its own online currency called ‘bitcoins’ which can be used to pay for things on the Web.

The Internet and mobile phones

In the past, web designers only developed websites for desktop PCs but today the world has changed.

More and more people access the Internet on their smartphones or tablets. This means websites and other online material must be ‘mobile compatible’ – i.e. they must be suitable for viewing on a mobile device.

What is the BWM degree? What will I study ?

The BWM degree is a four year full-time degree course in Web Media.

You will complete a set of compulsory courses which will give you the knowledge and skills required for working in the Web industry.

You will learn about design, technology and business, content and idea generation.

You will also study English as part of your BWM degree.
