MyOcean users workshop Stockholm 7-8 April 2011
Objectives
A. To provide structured assessment of the MCS products by existing mature National Systems / Services in the area of “Marine Resources” and provide feedback to producing units (MFCs and TACs)
B. Interact with fisheries relevant European and International organizations
C. Update the User Requirement Document (URD) for “Marine Resources” and receive feedback from ICES and other

Partners
• ICES – International Council for the exploration of the Sea (International)
• BSC – Black sea commission (International)• INRH –Institut National de Recherche Halieutique
(Morocco).• DTU-AQUA – Denmark National Institute of Aquatic
Resources• UL – University of Latvia• IMR – Institute of Marine Research (Norway)• IST – Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal)• IFREMER – French Research Institute for the
Exploitation of the Sea

• What we do? • Intermediate users – receive and supply information• End users – Use of produced data for research applications• Using data directly from Mercator (downstream service) and other
data providers• Applications:
– West Iberia Operational regional model forcing / validation (SST, sea level)
– Azores Operational model forcing / validation
– Biogeochemical operational modeling for both applications

Provided products
• Hydrodynamics• sst, chl a, surface sea level• But also we can provide nutrients, toxic
algae blooms (Project Asimuth)• Trophic chain dynamics• I.E. Azores case (Project Easy-co)

Potential Fishing Zones Prediction In Azores Region
• It has been regarded as a valid approach to a more sustainable and effective way of fishing / opposite to a non-scientific, random choosing of fishing spots
• Very active field of work in the last 10 years: in East Indian Ocean countries, Southeast Asia, Japan, Canada and Brazil
MyOcean users workshop Stockholm 7-8 April 2011
The methodology can be extended to other species and other regions
Region: Azores
Species: Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis)
Data: Time series (2002-2008) of reanalysis product (GLORYS)Chlorophyll data (remote sensing)Fisheries database
Execution:1 - Validation of MERCATOR product in the Azores Region2 - Apply the proposed methodology

The web tool could also provide other information (economical benefit):
•Time estimation to reach fishing ground locations.
•Estimation of the operational cost.
•Prediction of fisherman income.
•Information on the oceanographic phenomena, i.e. upwelling, front and eddy.
