ovERvIEwL.A. Turbine Corporation is a manufacturer of, and service provider for, application specific, highly engineered Turboexpanders that are utilized within power-recovery applications in industrial processes worldwide. Repair, re-design, field service and spare parts are made available for all Turboexpander brands. L.A. Turbine’s uniquely qualified and highly experienced team can meet the most demanding requirements of Hydrocarbon Processing and Geothermal Power Generation plants.

PRoDUCTsNEw EQUIPmENT L.A. Turbine designs and manufactures Turboexpanders for use in Hydrocarbon Gas Processing, Air Separation, Refrigeration and Energy Recovery Industries. Product categories include:

Expander-Compressor: This configuration is utilized in applications such as natural gas, petrochemical, air separation and other cryogenic processes. The power extracted by the expander wheel during the gas expansion is transferred through the shaft to the compressor which allows the recovered energy to be applied elsewhere in the process. The resulting temperature drop through the expander produces the refrigeration necessary for cryogenic gas processing.

Expander-Generator: Converts the energy from gas expansion into electric power. Expander-Generator equipment is typically offered in three configurations:

1. The expander shaft is coupled to a high-

speed gearbox input shaft, which output shaft is then coupled to the generator.

2. The expander shaft is the pinion of the high-speed gearbox, eliminating the coupling mentioned above. This configuration is also known as an integral gearbox.

3. The expander shaft is common with the rotor of a high-speed generator, eliminating the gearbox entirely.

Expander-Brake: Provides efficient means of cryogenic refrigeration while the energy recovered from the gas expansion is absorbed by a brake wheel rotating in an oil stream or air stream.

gEoThERmAL PowER soLUTIoNs L.A Turbine has proven its engineering competence by redesigning one of the largest Geothermal Turboexpander-Generator machines ever built. The expander, originally built by a competitor, had experienced significant reliability issues during a multi-year period. The Engineering Team at L.A. Turbine put it’s 300 years of accumulated Geothermal Turboexpander manufacturing experience to good use by expanding the design envelope and create new expander-wheel coupling technology. L.A. Turbine manufactured the components needed to complete the redesign and met the customer’s requirement of improving the reliability of the original design. Working with world class companies in the renewable energy field inspires the Team to provide improvements in efficiency and reliability.

REDEsIgN AND REvERsE ENgINEERINg Efficiency and reliability is essential to economic success in today’s process plant. L.A. Turbine offers redesign of your existing expander equipment. Utilizing advanced 3D laser scanning and CMM technology, the engineering team ensures a perfect fit, every time.

The Before and After images above show an example of a complete redesign, including refurbishment of the oil system skid, its associated pumps, valves, pressure tank and cooler, as well as the new PLC with HMI and transmitters.

Performance: If your Turboexpander equipment has been in service for several years, current process conditions may have changed significantly from the original design conditions. L.A. Turbine offers redesigns that increase efficiency, improve reliability and provide quick return on investment.

Reliability: L.A. Turbine has a proven track record of improving the mechanical reliability of existing expander equipment, regardless of original manufacturer.

BEFORE AFTER

sPARE PARTs L.A. Turbine will work with you to arrive at a spare parts inventory that is considerate of risk and capital expense appropriate to meet your organizational goals.

Turboexpanders can operate for years without servicing, however, starting and stopping, varying process conditions and external equipment may lead to a service requirement or cause failure. It is therefore critical to keep certain spare parts on hand in to meet emergency needs. Depending on your unique requirements, L.A. Turbine may recommend:

• Gasket sets, O-ring kits, and Teflon seals.• Disposable filter elements for lube oil and seal gas filters.• Repair kits for critical skid-mounted valves, actuators, regulators, and pumps.

• A spare MCS (Mechanical Center Section) If the operating unit is damaged, the spare MCS can be installed in a few days rather than weeks. This dramatically reduces down time and lost production revenue.

CoNTRoL sYsTEms Current control system technology allows vibration analysis and mechanical engineers a flexible data acquisition, monitoring, and control platform to more precisely diagnose and predict machinery malfunction. With a flexible data acquisition and analysis system, you gain the ability to easily expand input channel count and analysis functionality, without expensive upgrades. Similarly, data acquisition can be applied to post-manufacturing testing and real-time monitoring in the field. L.A. Turbine can incorporate state of the art upgrades such as speed, vibration and pressure transmitters and integrate these with compatible PLC’s and HMI panels that communicate with the DCS through Modbus® or Ethernet.

mAgNETIC bEARINgs L.A. Turbine’s experience with Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) systems spans decades. The engineering team in Valencia can claim involvement in the design and manufacture of the world’s first AMB equipped Turboexpander, and literally hundreds since that time. As a result of this experience, the confidence customers place in L.A. Turbine’s AMB expertise is evident; some of the largest oil & gas companies in the world get their equipment remanufactured in Valencia.
