Signature Programs
SIGNATURE PROGRAMS: A selection of our most popular programs!
Education Programs at the Cleveland History CenterOur Education programs are ideal for school field trips, after school programs, youth camp outings, and more! We have standards-based programs for all grades, spanning topics from immigration in the Western Reserve to Cleveland’s most well-known entrepreneurs and their inventions.
History on the MovePre-K to K (1 hour)
How has transportation changed over time? How have the designs, looks, and safety features of land, air, and water vehicles changed? Students are surrounded by cars, bikes, airplanes, and boats from long ago as they explore, observe, compare, and contrast these vehicles to present-day modes of transportation using the exhibit Setting the World in Motion. Students build model vehicles using building sets and maneuver themselves through a road course while they practice observing present-day traffic signs.
Into the WoodsGrades K-4 (2 hours)
Compare and contrast Eastern Woodland American Indians with Early Settlers! Using artifacts, students participate in hands-on activities exploring the relationship between land use and daily life. Making comparisons between the two cultures, students move from the specific to the general, discovering how people have met their basic needs over time. *Available as an outreach to your classroom! Mileage rates apply.
Setting the World in Motion STEM - Grades 1-3 (2 hours)
Design a car and learn about force, motion, and graphing. Students will work in groups and construct their cars before testing them for distance on the Gravity Ramp.
Entrepreneurship - Grades 3-5 (2 hours)
How did the entrepreneurs in our region shape Ohio industry and culture in the early 20th century? Surrounded by the Crawford Auto Aviation Collection and examples of Cleveland’s most innovative minds, students imagine themselves as entrepreneurs in a moving investigation of primary source documents to learn about productive resources and regional specialization, all while building a modern day business plan.
From There to HereGrades 3-8 (2 hours)
Unfold the story of an immigrant, migrant, or refugee family’s journey to Northeast Ohio. Students role-play as a family, dressing up to present their family’s story to the rest of the class. Age-appropriate primary documents provide information for students to discover when and from where they came, why they left, and what their hopes are for a future in Cleveland. Stories range from the 1840s to 1980s, and include European, Asian, Hispanic, African American, and Appalachian groups. *Available as an outreach to your classroom! Mileage rates apply.
REVolutionGrades 5-8 (2 hours)
In this program, students learn how an idea, in addition to other entrepreneurial considerations, can lead to the establishment of a successful business. Using the exhibit REVolution and the automobiles from the Western Reserve Historical Society’s collection, students explore how entrepreneurs involved in the automobile industry answered the fundamental questions of economics. Students conclude by developing a product pitch for an automobile they have redesigned.

School & Youth Programs
In the Backyard of HistoryPre-K (1 or 1.5 hours)
In this hands-on exhibit designed just for kids, students discover through play with an interactive Westside Market, building area, dress-up corner, old fashioned toys and chores sections, and a play house! Students explore the concept of family roots and what life was like for children growing up in the past.
In the Time and Place SpaceGrades 1-3 (2 hours)
How have the people of Northeast Ohio changed what they wear, how they cook, how they travel, how they see at night, and how they build their shelter over the past 200 years? Touch, arrange, build, select, compare, contrast, and experiment at activity stations designed to show these changes over time!
Getting Around Grades 1-2 (2 hours)
Surrounded by cars, bikes and airplanes of the past, students will learn basic map skills by making a giant map of the Western Reserve, creating a visitor map of the museum using a map key and compass skills, and exploring how “getting around” has changed over time.
Carousel Artist Grades K-5 (2 hours)
Using our Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel, students will use their awareness of a carousel horse style, theme, and stance to help them create their own unique carousel horse using tanagrams or drawing skills. At least one ride on the carousel is included with the program.
Carousel MathGrades K-8 (2 hours)
Using our Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel, students will learn the history of carousels and then become carousel designers! Students will use their knowledge of geometry to find the radius, circumference, and area of the carousel to find out, theoretically, how many horses will fit on the Euclid Beach Grand Carousel. After discovering an approximate number, they will create a class scale model using origami! At least one carousel ride is included with the program.
Moses Cleaveland Team-Building ChallengeGrades 3 and up (1.5 or 2 hours)
In this team-building program, students work together to overcome puzzles and challenges inspired by the many obstacles faced by early settlers of the Western Reserve. Through hands-on activities, students learn about how pioneer groups planned for their trips, traveled to their destinations, surveyed the land, and developed this area’s first cities, all while learning to work collaboratively with their classmates.
FlightGrades 5-12 (2 hours)
In our Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, students see and demonstrate the concepts of flight through various experiments and hands-on demonstrations. Students learn the four forces of flight, the three axes of flight, the anatomy of an airplane, and the various functions of airplanes through time. Finally, students “participate” in Cleveland’s historic National Air Races by conducting paper airplane experiments using the scientific method.

Youth Entrepreneurship
Youth Entrepreneurship EducationThe Youth Entrepreneurship Education (YEE) continuum brings over 10,000 teachers and students, including 5,600 students from Cleveland Metropolitan School District, to Hale Farm & Village and the Cleveland History Center annually to explore the Western Reserve’s most fascinating innovators and entrepreneurs. The YEE programs include classroom lessons that support authentic assessment and align with the Ohio’s Learning Standards for Social Studies, English and Language Arts. These innovative programs inspire students at a young age to embrace the entrepreneurial mindset, explore diversity through an expanded multicultural curriculum, value site specific educational opportunities, and cultivate skills in financial literacy and workforce readiness.
We are most grateful to the Burton D. Morgan Foundation for their leadership support of this vibrant continuum leading the youth of our region to craft the entrepreneurial spirit.

The YEE program really benefits our students because it fits in our place-based learning strategy where students are using the community as part of their learning lab, and because it is so carefully aligned with our 4th 5th and 6th grade social study standards. And so it’s aligned to what our teachers are expected to be teaching and what our students are supposed to be learning.”Eric Gordon, CEO, Cleveland Metropolitan School District

Teacher: Renee LeutzSchool: Louis Agassiz School, Cleveland Metropolitan School District Subject: Social Studies and Science Grade: 6-8
“This is the most exciting experience I have had with this class,” says Ms. Leutz, while her students were busy at the Cleveland History Center redesigning vintage cars and creating marketing slogans to attract modern buyers to their products. “I don’t think I would have been able to prepare them effectively had I not gone on the ‘Road Trip.’ There was some economic and financial curriculum that I had not taught before, being new to 6th grade social studies. So it gave me the opportunity to refresh my own skills. Also, I was able to keep my students’ needs in mind, while the [museum educators] walked us through activities the students were going to be doing. It prepared me so that all my students would be excited and successful while they are here.”
Excerpt from Fall 2016 published interview with Martha Holden Jennings Foundation

I was extremely impressed with the program my daughter took part in…the instructor was so great at making this particular program [Civil War Camp & Gear] come alive. She had props and asked a lot of questions, and the kids were allowed to touch the props and answer questions. It seemed fun and educational, which is always a challenge, but this program was so great! She also did a great job at keeping the kids focused and engaged.”Jacqueline Zepeda, Homeschool Educator

Looking for an authentic learning experience? National History Day is it! Founded at Case Western Reserve University in 1974, National History Day is a cross-curricular, project-based academic program for students in grades 6-12. Similar to a science fair, individuals or groups of students conduct research related to the year’s theme and then create an original Historical Paper, Exhibit, Performance, Documentary, or Website. Projects are evaluated by volunteer judges, and the top projects advance to represent Region 3 in a state-wide competition. Winners at state go on to compete at the national competition. The top National History Day prize, named after the founder of the competition, is the David Van Tassel Founder Award – a four-year, full tuition scholarship to Case Western Reserve University.
To learn about registering as a student, teacher, volunteer, or judge with Region 3 Ohio History Day, please call 216-721-5722 x1503 or email [email protected].
