Join us for a summer intensive that was created to

give participants an initial deep dive into design.

We offer a two-week summer studio that combines

lectures, hands-on workshops, field trips, guest

speakers and special events.

A two-week summer studio at NewSchool

California by Design is an integrative design studio where students are exposed to the West Coast region as a very specific context for design innovation. California is more than a place— it’s a lifestyle and worldwide it is known as the epicenter of innovation for action sports and hi-tech products and services. This studio will uncover what it means to be Californian by exploring its cultures, lifestyles and industries (such as surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, entertainment, and start-ups) and then examining their unique influences on fashion, behaviors and imaginations. Students will learn how the design of artifacts relates to built environments. They will also explore how design is influenced by California’s history, culture, environment and economic trends.

FIRST WEEK: 8/14 - 8/18 | 9-12pm / 1-4pm (Friday class ends at 3:00pm)

SECOND WEEK: 8/21 - 8/24 | 9-12pm / 1-4pm (Friday free)

“Growing up in San Diego we had a half pipe in my front yard, my father was making skateboards on the side so I was close to what I like to call “garage to factory” innovation. In college I raced downhill mountain bikes at the national level; many of the bike parts were modified by my engineering friends.” Bruce Matthes is the Director of Integrative Studies at NewSchool and he teaches interdisciplinary courses including: The Evolution of Surfing. He is co-author of a text on design research and enjoys surfing, snowboarding, and hiking in his free time.

My role is just to create an environment where they can uncover those ideas, and start making them real.” Dario Miticocchio is a “Design Nomad,” always exploring new facets of the discipline. He learned from masters like Makio Hasuike, Stefano GIovannoni and Guido Venturini, and continued to deliver iconic and award winning designs in Corporate America.
