The NewSchool of Architecture and Design Story

In 1980, the late Richard Welsh founded NewSchool of Architecture in a small industrial building in Chula Vista, California. Welsh had a vision: to create a superb professional education program that culminated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. The school’s evening class structure accommodated a large number of working students and continues today.

Change and growth came quickly. In 1988, NewSchool of Architecture relocated to central downtown San Diego, and the Master of Architecture and the Master of Science in Architecture programs were added the following year. In 2001, the school’s name was changed to NewSchool of Architecture and Design.

In 2008, NSAD became part of Laureate International Universities, which today is a global network of more than 70 accredited campus-based and online universities of-fering undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 780,000 students around the world. Since that time, NSAD has broadened its educational offerings within the architecture and design fields, adding degree programs in interior design, construction management, and digital media arts.

if you are ready to be challenged

and inspired to do your best work,

NewSchool of Architecture and

Design is the place for you.

On behalf of the administration and faculty, welcome to NewSchool of Architecture and Design. We are excited about the prospect of having you join the NSAD community and pursue your education here.

If you are like most students, you have looked at lots of brochures and websites searching for the right program, but how will you know which one is right for you?

I can tell you that NSAD’s mission has always been to nurture and inspire design-minded students. We are the right place for students who want to improve the quality of life in the built and natural environments, and are committed to sustainability. We value diversity, inquiry, and the willingness to question. And we believe that higher education should involve open exchange and dialogue, critical thinking, and a collaboration among students, professors, and the professional community at large.

If you share these values and are looking for a school where you will be inspired to do your best work, challenged to realize your true potential, and can study architecture and design from both a theoretical and practical perspective, NSAD is for you.

I invite you to look further and come visit our campus and classes. I bet you will like what you see.

Sincerely,

Henri T. de Hahn Provost, NewSchool of Architecture and Design

Social Consciousness

While sustainability and accessibility were once considered luxuries for the built environment and media, they are now the expectation. For more than three decades, NSAD has led the way with programs built on a solid ethical foundation and has long promoted accessible, socially beneficial, and sustainable design solutions.

Faculty Practitioners

At NSAD, the majority of our faculty members are highly experienced, active practitioners. They help prepare you for your career by bringing the past, present, and future of architecture and design into the classroom.

Collaborative Environment

Our students are encouraged to collaborate with other students and faculty. And because we maintain relationships with many San Diego-area firms, there are opportunities to meet and consult with local professionals throughout your course of study.

Prime Location

NSAD is located in San Diego’s East Village—an area of revitalization in the city’s central business district. Minutes from the Mexican border, the city boasts a diverse artistic community and wonderful weather, which provides an astounding urban classroom all year round.

International Affiliations

NSAD is affiliated with Laureate International Universities, a global network of more than 70 institutions of higher learning with more than 100 campuses in 29 countries. A Vibrant and Supportive Community

You will feel the passion for learning at NewSchool of Architecture and Design from the moment you arrive. Before classes begin, you will attend an orientation to find out everything you need to know about NSAD programs, services, policies, activities, and more. There is a culture of connection and support among students, faculty, and the city of San Diego that will continue long after you graduate and begin making a difference in the professional world.

The environment at NSAD is designed to foster your curiosity, inventiveness, and creativity. From expansive studio spaces and classrooms, to technology and project labs and the library, the NSAD campus is built with educational success in mind.

NSAD—Where the Ideas Never Stop

One of the key components of your learning experience takes place in the NSAD design studio, which provides living laboratories that link students to the world they inhabit today and will shape in the future. Here you will experience firsthand the intensity that comes from total immersion in your design projects. Collaborating with other students. Opening yourself up to others’ critique. And eventually reaping the rewards of the process. This rigor and excitement is a strength of the NSAD program. It is something you might not experience in other fields of study or at other schools, but it is critical to becoming an excellent architect and designer.

San Diego is Your Classroom

San Diego blends city and nature, and local and global influences, to create an ideal spot for learning architecture and design. A unique environment where coastal town meets urban metropolis, San Diego has an architecture and design community that faces challenges such as urban sprawl, demand for infrastructure investment, pressure on natural environments, an increasingly complicated urban-wild interface, water needs for both cities and agriculture, as well as political and ecological concerns that emerge from the city’s shared border with Mexico.

The result is that San Diego is an amazing laboratory for experimentation and exploration of urban conditions—both now and in the future.

NSAD—Part of a Unique Community

Located in San Diego’s East Village, the NewSchool of Architecture and Design campus lies right in the middle of the downtown art district—where local architects and other creative professionals have transformed once-empty industrial space into contemporary and often sustainable offices and studios. NSAD’s commitment to the local profession and its relationship with highly regarded firms in the area have resulted in extraordinary career opportunities and internships for its students.

A Life Like None Other in San Diego

When you are not in class, you are surrounded by things to do in San Diego including street festivals, art fairs, hiking, mountain biking, shopping, and 70 miles of beaches. In what is sometimes called a laid-back surfer community, swimming, sailing, and whale watching are everyday activities.

Architecture will continue to be redefined because the very concept itself changes over time. With that understanding, the students and faculty at NSAD are engaged in the process of discovering what architecture is in the 21st century. There are tremendous challenges ahead, as well as boundless opportunities for those who want to explore them with us.

Kurt Hunker, FAIA graduate Architecture Program Chair

Master of Architecture I

The Master of Architecture I can serve as a first professional degree for post-baccalaureate students who want to be architects, and it is recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) as part of the requirements for eventual architectural licensure. Students with a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field will typically require three years of full-time study. Students with a B.A. or B.S. in architecture, or a related degree, will be able to complete the program with two years of full-time study.

Master of Architecture II

Designed for students already possessing a first professional degree in architecture, the Master of Architecture II builds on foundational knowledge in art and design with a program that integrates thesis-based learning and coursework to explore architecture in the context of history and theory, tectonics, urban studies, and professional practice. The program typically requires one year of full-time study.

Master of Science in Architecture

From urban planning to interior design, many professionals today benefit from in-depth study of architecture. If you want to enrich your knowledge of the field but don’t plan to pursue architectural licensing, consider earning your Master of Science in Architecture. Students with a bachelor’s degree in any field may apply. The program typically requires one to two years of full-time study.

Campus Facilities—Spaces That Inspire

When you enter the campus at NewSchool of Architecture and Design, you see sustainability at work. Our main buildings are adaptive reuses of the old ‘Hang 10’ site and the Wonder Bread Building. The 100,000-square-foot urban space is networked for maximum efficiency in regards to technology. The marriage of these two elements gives a unique pulse to the campus.

Architecture and Interior Design students have a designated studio space for their entire tenure at NSAD that is available to them 24/7. Our newly designed Mac lab center gives students access to the latest graphic art and design software, and three CAD labs are also conveniently located on campus. The campus also has two print centers featuring the latest technologies including a Ricoh Aficio 6501. All print usage is covered in the student fees. Our IT department is staffed by specialists who are available to assist students with any technical issues they may encounter.

The Wonder Bread building is the newest addition to the campus facilities. Recently renovated, the location provides students with classroom space, studio space, a computer lab, and print center.

Urban, iconic: the NSAD campus is unlike any other. Where city meets design in perfect rapport.

Where Ideas Become Reality

NewSchool of Architecture and Design has an on-site Material Laboratory that enables students to bring their ideas to fruition. Whether they need to make a representation of a design; fabricate a steel truss to see if it works; build real, functional furniture; or create a prototype that is plastic or metal, students can do so in the shop. Students have access to three types of fabrication utilities offered in the shop:

+ A woodworking facility with table, panel, miter and radial arm saws, drill presses, band saws, multiple types of sanders, a large planer and jointer, and a full array of both power and manual hand tools.

+ A metal lab which can be utilized for everything from welding to precision sheet metal fabrication and plasma cutting.

+ A digital facility, which is still expanding but currently houses two industrial Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines—a laser and a router— three smaller-format Universal Laser Systems for more intricate work, as well as a digital light-processing photopolymer 3D printer for the fabrication of highly complex geometries.

The lab is also home to the new Digital Fabrication class, an in-depth exploration of how and why to use the digital fabrication tools in architecture and design projects.

NSAD Career Services Helps Make it Happen

Integrating students into the professional design community while they are still in school is one of the most important advantages of and priorities at NSAD. We encourage students to visit local practitioners and studios and to attend design reviews and exhibitions and other networking opportunities throughout San Diego.

NSAD’s Career Services Department supports students by providing one- on-one consultations long before they are job hunting. Proactive and responsive, we are different than most schools in that we provide a comprehensive mentorship that lasts far beyond a student’s educational career. We develop a personalized Career Management Plan that strategically

diagrams a process of career exploration and preparation that positions students for key opportunities within their field.

Career Services also provides resume and interview prep sessions, a current job board, and connects students with local firms and companies. A dedicated team assists students with internships and job searches and helps connect them to professional opportunities while supporting them every step of the way. We engage with every student pre- and post-graduation and will maintain an ongoing relationship with you throughout your career.

Alumni Success

As an NSAD graduate, you will have the skills and confidence to build a meaningful career and a better world. Our distinguished alumni are involved in almost every aspect of professional practice. They are leaders in their field who continue to support NSAD through new student recruitment, career mentoring, teaching, and serving as design critics.

Recognizing the importance of continuing to cultivate relationships between current students and alumni, the NSAD Alumni Advisory Board has created the Alumni Mentorship Program. Through this program, alumni interact with current students, share their unique professional perspectives, and give students the opportunity to develop powerful professional networking experiences—something they can use upon graduation and beyond.

+ Lectures+ Excursions+ Computer lab+ Design studio+ Portfolio development

Summer Study Abroad Program Students learn about the influences of culture on architecture and design as they travel to Rome, Copenhagen, or one of the many architecturally rich cities of greece. The five-week tour begins in San Diego where students from NSAD and Laureate International Universities sister schools experience the architectural designs of Southern California. Accredited Member, NAABThe professional architectural programs offered at NewSchool of Architecture and Design are accredited by the National Architectural Board (NAAB). These programs include the B.Arch, M.Arch I, and the Executive Master of Architecture.

In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 6-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.

Master’s degree programs may consist of a preprofessional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the preprofessional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

However, the preprofessional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree. NewSchool of Architecture and Design offers the following NAAB-accredited degree programs:+ B. Arch (235 quarter undergraduate credits)+ M. Arch (preprofessional degree plus 90 quarter graduate credits)+ M. Arch (non-preprofessional degree plus 135 quarter credits)+ M.
