InnovationInnovative tool concepts and complete solutions have al-ways been one of the main competences of the KOMET GROUP. The internationally re-nowned innovation leader for high-precision drilling, ream-ing and thread cutting does not see itself merely as a tool manufacturer, but rather as a supplier of innovative ideas.

The company, which has a long tradition of exemplary creativity, develops, produces and sells customer-specific solutions and products for all manufacturing levels.

„For us, ideas are the basis of success.“ says Dr. Christof Bönsch, Managing Director of the KOMET GROUP. „Ideas in

production mean that we are continually developing new ideas that will benefit our cus-tomers,“ he adds. With TOOLS PLUS IDEAS, national and in-ternational customers from the automobile industry, gen-eral mechanical engineering sector, aviation and aerospace, shipbuilding, medicine, energy technology or agricultural ma-

chinery construction receive more support and services.

The KOMET GROUP relies on consistent innovation as the motor of success and growth. „Thanks to our excellently qualified specialist staff, we are regularly able to set new benchmarks in product devel-opment,“ says Matthias Heinz,

Managing Director of the KOMET GROUP. Consistent in-novation pays, as can be seen by the award for the KOMET GROUP as one of the 100 most innovative companies in Germany, received in 2011 for the second time in succession.

With TOOLS PLUS IDEAS the KOMET GROUP is offering its customers more than just the production of high-quality precision tools. The focus is always on innovative products and solutions for customer benefit.

The KOMET GROUP took over rhoBeSt GmbH on June 1, 2011, and is expanding its coating expertise. Innsbruck-based KOMET RHOBEST is a research-oriented company whose core competence is in the field of nano diamond coating.

With the acquisition, the KOMET GROUP is extending its know-how in the coating sec-tor, and will be launching high-quality „customized“ coatings for aviation and aerospace applications, mould construc-

tion and the energy sector onto the market in future.

„With KOMET Rhobest we are remaining true to our policy of constant product innovation,“ says Dr. Christof Bönsch, man-aging director of the KOMET GROUP. „In future, we will be developing a respective prod-uct range both for standard tools and special solutions, and launch this on the market,“ he continues.

For the first time, the method patented by rhoBeSt allows

ultra-fine, top-quality and high-purity diamond layers to be applied even to large and complex-shaped surfaces. The KOMET GROUP is using this process for the diamond coat-ing of tools which are particu-larly suitable for machining fibre-reinforced plastics and aluminium alloys. rhoBeSt has its own research depart-ment for application-related development, and has been cooperating with leading inter-national research laboratories and universities for more than 15 years.

Coatings withnano-crystalline diamond

KOMET RHOBEST uses its own in-house developed process which allows a large range of base materials to be given a high-quality coating for the first time. Optimum adhesion of the nano diamond layer on the surface is achieved thanks to specially developed preliminary treatment methods.

At the heart of the process is the highly efficient prepara-tion of atomic hydrogen from the gas phase of methane and hydrogen, which creates nano-crystalline diamonds on the sur-

face of the base material. No matter the base material used, its surface is given the charac-teristics of a diamond.

The special process allows the precise setting of crystallite size, and thus surface roughness. The preparation of so-called ultra-nano-crystalline diamond layers results in very smooth surfaces and extremely sharp or hard cutting edges due to the size of the nano diamonds (< 10 nm). The tiny size of the nano diamonds means that the relation between surface and

volume significantly increases, and with it the number of sur-face atoms.

As a result, there is a signifi-cant improvement in both the adhesion and stability of the layer, as well as its mechanical properties.

The RHOBEST process allows the precise setting of crystallite size, and thus surface rough-ness.

The KOMET GROUP is among the top 100 most innovative medium-size companies in Germany once again. For the second con-

secutive year, the company received the „Top 100“ quality award from Lothar Späth for its outstanding innovative work.

KOMET GROUP and Tosa Machinery & Tools found the subsidiary KOMET Ryoco.

The KOMET GROUP is further expanding its international presence. Together with the traditional Japanese company Tosa Machinery & Tools, the in-ternational company group has founded the subsidiary KOMET Ryoco.

The new company is based in Osaka. Dr. Christoph Bönsch, managing director of the KOM-ET GROUP, and Mr. Junichi-rou Machida, President of Tosa Machinery Tools Co. Ltd., have signed a cooperation contract sealing the deal.

“The founding of this joint venture in Japan is another im-portant step within the context of our international growth strategy,” Dr. Christoph Bönsch, managing director of the KOMET GROUP, explains. “With Tosa Machinery & Tools we have gained a strong and reliable partner who has the same high level of product quality awareness as we do,” Bönsch continues.

Prior to the joint venture, the two companies had already been cooperating in the sales of high-precision frictional tools for more than 30 years.

Tosa Machinery & ToolsThe traditional family-owned company with its headquarters in Osaka was founded in 1948 and distributes high-quality tools. It has more than 140 employees and a comprehensive sales network throughout Japan. Together with the joint subsidiary, Tosa Machinery & Tools will be further expanding its product portfolio.

Dr. Heiner Geißler Former Federal MinisterFormal minister for Social Affairs, Youth, Health and Sport, former Federal Mi-nister for Youth, Family and Health, bestseller author, arbitrator for „Stuttgart 21“, gave a fascinating talk about „New intelligence in busi-ness and politics“ at the IDEEN-FORUM+.

IDEEN-FORUM+ 2011 bridg-es the gap between theory and practice, and between different sectors.

Pushing forward with exper-tise along the innovation pro-cess chain and designing the future together was the motto of this year‘s IDEEN-FORUM+ which was held on May 11 and 12, 2011, in Besigheim.

In figures: 1,770 fascinat-ing lecture minutes, 47 re-nowned speakers and experts, and more than 400 inspired visitors on both event days. „Main topics included, „Fu-ture and growth markets“

and „Chances for Germany“ with our top-class speakers and experts, and learned a lot about technical and market-related trends, perspectives and strategies,“ Dr. Christof Bönsch, Managing Director of the KOMET GROUP, sums up the event. „With the IDEEN-FORUM+ we have pressed ahead with the dialogue be-tween technology, business and science in order to devel-op even more innovations,“ Bönsch adds.

Through speakers such as Dr. Heiner Geißler (former Federal Minister), Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Franz (chairman of the coun-

cil of economic experts which advises the German govern-ment) or Masahiko Mori (Pres-ident of Mori Seiki Co. Ltd.), the IDEEN-FORUM+ 2011 managed to bring together a whole range of different per-spectives.

Visitors could put their own program of events together and choose between impulse, technology and special inter-est talks. Alongside numerous first-class lectures, compre-hensive product exhibitions and practice-oriented demon-strations rounded off the lively program.

The IDEEN-FORUM+ organ-ised by the KOMET GROUP since 2001 is a recognized, cross-sector event for deci-sion-makers and experts of leading companies from the fields of metalworking, me-chanical engineering, auto-mobile and supplier industries as well as medicine and en-ergy technology.

This year, the event was held in the company‘s own IDEEN-FABRIK+ for the first time. The facility provides and area of 2,500 square metres and the optimum combination of modern conference rooms on the one hand and product and

machine presentation possi-bilities on the other. Note the date now for the next IDEEN-FORUM+ in 2012. We look forward to meeting you in the IDEEN-FABRIK+ on May 9 and 10, 2012.

KUB K2®

Challenging peakin bore machining

KOMET KUB K2® replace-able head drill for extreme-ly small diameters.

In the same way that moun-tain climbers find the smaller K2 the greater challenge, drilled holes with extremely small diameters is also con-sidered to be the more de-manding machining problem. This is particularly true when replaceable cutting edges should be cost efficient and flexible. The KOMET® KUB K2™ replaceable head drill was developed as a clever so-lution for tackling extremely small diameters and, even in these ranges, it combines the benefits of replaceable cut-ting inserts with maximum performance.

The KOMET GROUP has demonstrated that modular-ity brings you cost efficiency and flexibility in a very wide range of tooling systems ranging from continuous

drilling and boring through to reaming. However, the small-er the hole diameters, the more challenging it becomes to make it possible to use replaceable cutting edges in the form of indexable inserts or changeable heads. The KOMET® KUB K2™ is based on basic holders with a paral-lel shank, where the double-edged carbide changeable heads have been adapted. This is done using a patented self-fixing and self-centring attachment point. The pro-cess of changing the cutting head becomes extremely easy – even in the machine. The replaceable head system makes it possible to use a very wide selection of high-end geometries. The opti-mised surface finish quality of the cutting channels en-sures excellent chip removal. The basic bodies achieve an extremely high performance level and tool life thanks to a special surface finish quality.

KOMET KUB K2® - Two basic body variants in 3xD und in 5xD - Changeable heads in two coating variants „8425“ und „2725“ - For machining steel, cast iron, aluminium

and stainless materials - Available from stock - The previously available diameter ranges 12 to 15.9

millimetre are covered in increments of 0.01 millimetre. Additional diameters up to 8 millimetre or up to 18 millimetre are to follow.

Precise careerprospects

Creativity, commitment and responsibility are the name of the game at KOMET.

The KOMET GROUP offers a wide range of entry and career perspectives. Whether people are just starting out in working life, or are already highly qualified specialists and executives – the commit-ment of every single em-ployee is important.

The more than 1,500 KOMET employees worldwide regard

themselves as creative experts carrying the technology for-ward, and work in a climate where their suggestions are eagerly awaited. „Innovations can only be discovered and implemented with an open and creative spirit,“ empha-sises Managing Director Mat-thias Heinz.

„Our employees are extremely dedicated, and are always

coming up with new ideas, which we solidly support,“ he continues. Employee ideas range from improving health and safety at work to opti-mizing production workflows. And it is not only the company itself that benefits from these ideas, but above all its cus-tomers. Because of ongoing commitment, all employees become valuable experts for the company.

„Creativity and innovation is what makes us stand out in the field of products and processes, both nationally and internationally,“ adds Dr. Christof Bönsch, the sec-ond member of the com-pany management team. „We are looking for employ-ees who are open to new ide-as and enjoy developing them further,“ Bönsch continues.

Whether for DHBW students, young professionals or expe-rience specialists and execu-tives – the company keeps its promises.

International work experi-ence is another priority at the globally operating company. DHBW students are given the opportunity of working at a KOMET branch abroad for several weeks, for example. A

win-win situation for the em-ployees and the company, and one which benefits everyone in the long run.

High-End-QualityKOMET KomTronic® U-axis system in valve seat machining

U S E R R E P O R T

Production Manager Jörg Westenberger at HOFSTET-TER can vouch for a con-siderably higher level of quality and flexibility of the U-axis systems of the KOMET GROUP, when com-pared to other special tools used for machining valve seats.

“Product variance and the manufacture of individual parts in themselves clearly show how necessary the high level of flexibility in our produc-tion process is.”, explains Jörg Westenberger, giving one of

the reasons for deciding to purchase a KOMET KomTron-ic® U-axis system. The level of precision required, reflected particularly in such demand-ing processes as valve seat ma-chining in high-performance cylinder heads, was however the deciding factor. The spe-cial tools that are normally used had reached their limits and the quality requirements could only be attained with great effort. Special tools used to machine complex contours in one operation produce high cutting pressures. Their cutting behaviour differs sub-

stantially from the ‘lathe ma-chining’ such as is performed with the KOMET KomTronic® U-axis system.

Programmable contour machining

KOMET KomTronic® U-axis systems are mechatronic tool solutions that can be auto-matically exchanged from the tool magazine in machining centres. They are freely pro-grammable, and enable com-plex lathe machining opera-tions in one contour pass. This saves the purchase of special

tools and makes it possible to respond quickly to changes in geometry. In relation to the quality that can be attained with the U-axes, Jörg West-enberger speaks of significant improvements in terms of surface quality, running toler-ances, concentricity and angle precision.

Machining expertise at the limits of what is possible

For over 40 years, the tightest of tolerances, extremely dif-ficult geometries and exotic materials have been all in a

day’s work for Günter Hof-stetter Präzisions-Metallbear-beitung GmbH & Co. KG in Schwaigern. Known for high-end quality, the company has been supplying engine and drive chain components for development departments in the automotive industry since the mid-1980s.

With expertise in the limits of what is possible, the manu-facture of high-end solutions for motor sport, as well as the development of prototypes for series-production vehicles, is accommodated among the

unique and individual parts produced by HOFSTETTER. In addition, production (designed for the highest level of preci-sion and technical flexibility) is also used to manufacture ex-acting niche products for the vehicle industry, the aerospace industry, mechanical engineer-ing, the medical industry or energy system construction, in small and medium-sized pro-duction runs.

Brok

en

Broken dies in metal-ma-chining production usually have fatal consequences, and broken die monitoring systems only kick in when the die is already broken. To prevent this happening in the first place, employees need to be able to recognize latent problem areas and initiate suitable measures. Broken dies are not usually a sudden occurrence.

Problematic areas where broken dies are most likely to occur include extreme machining processes with interrupted cuts. Unsta-ble components such as welding structures or pack-age machining can also present problems. Long-chipping materials as well as abrasive materials and high-strength materials re-quire special attention, too. Last but not least, prob-lems can also occur on the machine side, if the center height is no longer correct in a lathe, for example, or the

revolver disc can no longer stay in position under the feeding force.

The possibilities of avoiding broken dies are a package of inter-related measures that qualified machine op-erators can take. One of the main conditions, however, is that he is in a position to recognize when a die could break and the reasons for this, so that they can be eliminated or minimized. Some old hands might quite literally be able to sense changes in the process com-ing or feel them through unusual vibrations, but an active visual inspection of the dies is more reliable.

This is where employee qual-ification becomes a success factor. The IDEEN-FABRIK+ of the KOMET GROUP offers seminars which have been designed to increase the ‚know-how‘ of avoiding broken dies.

Customer-oriented service on all continents

KOMET GROUP establishes its Center of Competence concept and sets new stand-ards internationally in the field of product quality.

The KOMET GROUP and its 20 subsidiaries employ more than 1,450 people working and are represented in 50 countries.

Alongside the main Ger-man facilities in Besigheim and Stuttgart, the KOMET GROUP has production fa-cilities in Brazil, Mexico, USA, Poland, India, China, Korea

and Japan, as well as a grow-ing network of national and international repair locations.

In order to guarantee identical product quality internationally, the KOMET GROUP has devel-oped and introduced the so-called Center of Competence concept.

„With the KOMET Center of Competence we have defined new standards in produc-tion worldwide,“ explains Dr. Christof Bönsch, Managing Director of the KOMET GROUP. „Our customers can rely on

the fact that if a product has a KOMET label, it contains KOMET quality,“ Bönsch con-tinues.

The German production lo-cations, which have years of experience in all aspects of tool production, are acting as Centers of Competence. The KOMET Center of Competence is a worldwide leading plant for modern products and in-novative manufacturing tech-nologies. Its task is to provide intensive support for the inter-national KOMET locations, in-cluding active support with the

acquirement of process and production knowledge. During this process, the production lo-cations are qualified according to a standardized, transparent and cooperative location de-velopment plan, whereby indi-vidual country-specific market circumstances are taken into account.

The company‘s long years of experience in the business fields of drilling, carbide and reaming as well as mechatron-ic systems serve as a basis for worldwide growth and devel-opment of the lines.

With the completion of a new, state-of-the-art logis-tic centre, the company has made yet another in-vestment in the Besigheim location.

“Our investments are de-signed to benefit our custom-ers, and we would like to work even faster,” says Dr. Christof Bönsch, Managing Director of the KOMET GROUP, explain-ing why the modern high-bay warehouse is being put into operation. A reduction of the individual handling levels achieves a faster processing time for incoming orders.

The logistics centre is equipped with the very latest technology,

and provides space for around 15,000 items from the KOMET, DIHART and JEL ranges over an area of 400 m². “Cutting-edge warehouse technology and high-capacity IT equipment minimize operating costs and inventory efforts significantly,” adds Matthias Heinz, Managing Director of the KOMET GROUP.

The KOMET GROUP project was realized together with the com-petent planning and construc-tion partners i+o Industriepla-nung + Organisation GmbH & Co KG, MFI AG and Goldbeck Süd GmbH. The new logistics centre has been built an extension of the existing building on the com-pany grounds.

The IDEEN-FABRIK+ reflects the evolution of the KOMET GROUP from a tool manufac-turer to a creative expert for solutions covering all aspects of

drilling, reaming, thread cutting and mechatronic tools. The central objective is to of-fer our customers and employ-ees scope for creative working

and learning. On a total area of 2,500 m², we have created a modern, multi-storey fac-tory environment. The IDEEN-FABRIK+ was deliberately not

constructed as a separate, de-tached training building, but in-tegrated directly above a man-ufacturing business. While the metal swarf flies down below,

ideas are exchanged above. With this, we aim to demon-strate that the work here is always associated with new ideas and creative ambition.

All compact seminars, many special seminars and the IDEEN-FABRIK+ itself are cer-tified to ISO 9001. Alongside the fact that certification is independent confirmation of the quality of the events, your advantage is that these quali-fication and training measures provided by the IDEEN-FAB-

RIK+ are officially recognized as such and can be subsidized. The high quality of our servic-es has also been recognized by the Federal Employment Agency since January 2010, when it granted our company the status of „certified edu-cational institute“. The objec-

tive of our seminars is the di-rect implementation of what has been learned in practice. For this reason, our speakers are all experience applica-tion engineers. The contents of our training seminars are up to date, and focussed on practical applications suitable for day-to-day work.

Certified quality

With the IDEEN-FABRIK+ and the comprehensive seminar program for customers and employee qualification, the KOMET GROUP aims to offer its customers a measurable and permanent competitive advantage over the compe- tition.

The aim of the IDEEN-FABRIK+ is to reduce your unit costs and

increase productivity. „We spe-cifically qualify your employ-ees. We make them aware of the performance potentials of tools and cutting materials, and the optimization of the

cutting parameters which can be achieved this way,“ explains Frank Stahl, manager of the IDEEN-FABRIK+.

Make it Easy!

‚Treat‘

Easy! Wireless technol-ogy has entered the machine room with the new KOMET MicroKom® BluFlex™ fine boring sys-tem. Bluetooth technol-ogy suitable for industrial applications permits the convenient setting of fine-adjustment heads.

The Bluetooth technology in the new KOMET MicroKom®

BluFlex™ fine boring system meets the special require-ments of metal-cutting man-ufacturing and allows the dis-play to be disconnected from

the fine-adjustment head. The operator can mount the external display unit for set-ting the fine-adjustment head anywhere he likes in his field of vision, depending on the conditions at the ma-chine. Bluetooth sets up the connection for data transfer from the path measuring system. In other words the fine-adjustment head to the display unit. There is a spe-cially designed adjustment key integrated in the Blue-tooth interface. In addition to being convenient, the illu-minated display is larger than

would be possible on the fine-adjustment head itself, helping to reduce errors even further. Another advantage of separating the display is weight reduction at the tool, allowing faster speeds.

ImprintIn order to implement a crankcase production line, the mechanical engineer-ing company Keppler has worked closely with a pro-ject management team from the KOMET GROUP and revised the menu, in other words the process and tool design.

Among the most striking of the work cycles and the ‘main course’ on the menu for manu-facturing crankcases is the ma-chining of the camshaft and crankshaft bore holes. “The tool or machining concept has been very similar for decades,” says Peter Flaig, project man-ager at Keppler Maschinen-bau GmbH. The challenge is to bore the holes in an exact

relation to one another. Long bore rods, traditionally with counter bearings, machine the holes at the same time in one setting. The precision required is produced in the interaction between machine, jig and tool. One of Keppler’s latest projects, a production line for the ma-chining of crankcases for 6-cyl-inder truck in-line engines, is also based on this concept.

However, Flaig describes the tools from the KOMET GROUP as a ‘treat’. What he means is related partly to the flat slide moulds integrated in the 2000 mm bore rods.

With these, an additional central thrust bearing can be precisely drilled by the bore rod for the crankcase, and a compression bearing shoul-

der at the front of the casing by the bore rod for the cam-shaft holes. At the end of the day: a well-known ‘menu’ for machining the crankcase, but ‘served’ in a new order.
