‘People’s Sight Matters’ -A new 5 year strategy for Moorfi eldsIn July Moorfi elds NHS Trustlaunched it’s 2017-2022 strategywhich brings together all aspects ofthe trust’s work across clinical care, research and education and appliesto both NHS and private services, both in the UK and internationally.

The new strategy builds on theoriginal ‘Vision of Excellence’ strategypublished in 2012 and respondsto signifi cant changes in the worldaround us so that Moorfi elds strategyremains relevant for the next fi veyears.

Jo Moss, Director of Strategy andBusiness Development at Moorfi elds came to talk to Friends aboutthe process for developing the strategy refresh, and how we canall help with it’s delivery. You can listen to the full interviewon www.friendsofmoorfi elds.org.uk

“We were very clear at the outset that we wanted the process tobe very inclusive and all encompassing. So it does not just focuson our NHS services, but also on cinical service delivery; researchand education. We also wanted the strategy to include our privatebusinesses in the UK and abroad.

I co-led the process with Professor Andrew Dick, who is theDirector of the Institute of Ophthalmology. We held a numberof workshops with staff which gave us lots of information aboutareas which we are good at, but also areas where we need to domore work.

We also spoke to peopleoutside of Moorfi elds: theRNIB, Fight for Sight, ouracademic partner - UCLboth national and localcommissioners, and a numberof colleges. After 9 monthswe had developed a clearunderstanding of what wethought our priorities weregoing to be going forward. So at that point we wanted toengage with our patients.

We developed an online survey where over 400 peopleresponded to our draft strategy. Then we held a jointpatient and staff workshop where we had a more indepthconversation, particularly focusing on our objectives andasking whether the patient was central enough.

Our core belief ‘People’s Sight Matters’ came out of thisworkshop. We want to have an emphasis on why weall come to work, why we all care. It was really clearfrom talking to patients and talking to staff that it is anunderstanding that people’s sight is really important andthat is the thing that we need to hold central to everythingwe do no matter where we are working, which of ournetworked sites or what our job role is, whether that bedelivering front line services, or in our fi nance department– that people’s sight matters should be the golden threadthat carries throughout all we do.”

This June Friends were delighted to join colleagues fromMoorfi elds Eye Charity, The ‘Know Your Drops’ team and staffat Moorfi elds Ealing to take part in the annual London NorthWest Healthcare NHS Trust Open Day which was held at EalingHospital. “The open day was a huge success. It was great to providevisitors on the day with a guided tour around the Moorfi eldsunit and explain/discuss the provision to local residents. Theevent was very well attended by vaious hospital departmentsof Ealing Hospital, the Ealing CEO and 3 x local mayors fromsurrounding boroughs. We were even joined by an X factorcontestant Honey G and our staff met and had photos takenalongside her. It was a lovely day and we would be veryhappy to participate again next year we got to meet otherdepartments and people that we might not have had contactwith under normal circumstances. The sun shone all day aswell which of course was a welcome bonus.” Valarie Giddings,Clinic Manager Moorfi elds Ealing.

A day in the life of an ECLO(Eye Clinic Liaison Offi cer)

Eye Clinic Liaison Offi cers (ECLOs), work closely with medicaland nursing staff in the eye clinic, and the sensory team insocial services. They provide those recently diagnosed with aneye condition with the practical and emotional support whichthey need to understand their diagnosis, deal with their sightloss and maintain their independence.

Having an ECLO is one of the most effective ways of supportingpatients in the eye clinic. ECLOs are key in helping patientsunderstand the impact of their diagnosis and providing themwith emotional and practical support for their next steps.

Friends recognise the importance of the ECLO role and giveMoorfi elds a grant to pay for an ECLO to support patients inNorthwick Park asd Ealing satallite sites. Nalini Chauhan hasbeen in post for two years now and we met with her to fi ndout more about her work.

My days vary depending on which clinics are running that day;I have built up a good relationship with the nursing staff andthe doctors/consultants in all the different clinics, as they allrefer patients to me. Patients can also refer themselves andI sometimes get referrals directly from GP’s, from MiddlesexAssociation for the Blind or from the RNIB.

A really important part of what I do is helping with registeringpeople as ‘Partially Sight Impaired’ or ‘Severely Sight Impaired’this depends on someone’s visual accurity and takes intoaccount their visual fi elds. The registration needs to be signedby a Consultant but I look out for patients who may need tobe registered and help with initial paperwork to speed up theprocess.

Being registered can be areal advantage to patients asit means they are eligible toapply for additonal benefi tsand support, such as PIP(Personal IndependentPayment) A Blue Badge(Severely Sight Impairedpeople only) Freedon Pass(London residents only)Disabled Persons Railcard,Cinema cards Taxicards etc.

I explain the differencebetween the two types ofregistration and give thepatients that are registeredmore information about whatthey are entitled to and signpost them on to organisationsthat can help them such as the RNIB.

I also give practical help to patients - such as working withthe International Glaucoma Association and the ‘KnowYour Drops’ team to help people understand different aidsthat are available to help with putting in eye drops. Whenthere is a diabetic clinic I work with nurses and dieticiansto ensure patients understand and follow information theyreceive.”

The Science of Sight

“Make Vision Count”World Sight Day 12th October 2017

Dr Moosajee said: “We were thrilled to be invited to displayour work at the Science Museum. It’s exciting to reach peopleof all ages and showcase some of the ground-breakingresearch being carried out at Moorfi elds and UCL. Our sight isso important but we wanted to show that art and science canbe enjoyed by everyone. By using tactile art, scent and soundwe made the exhibition as accessible to as many people aspossible.”

In 2010, just over 28% of theworld’s population were affectedby Myopia (short-sightedness).This is predicted to rise to 34%by 2020 and nearly 50% by2050.

In 2014, approximately 422million people, or 8.5% of

adults worldwide, were living with diabetes, compared to 108million in 1980. Low and middle-income countries accountfor approximately 75% of the global diabetes burden.Approximately one in three people living with diabetes havesome degree of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and one in 10 willdevelop a vision-threatening form of the disease.

This World Sight Day, help Friends raise awareness and get thenumbers out, so we know where we stand. Please call 0207251 1240 for more information about our activities.Remember, 4 out of 5 or 80% of the world’s blind areavoidably so.

As part of the BBC Tomorrow’sWorld Live series. Dr MariyaMoosajee, consultantophthalmologist at Moorfi elds, led visitors to The ScienceMuseum in London on a sensoryexploration into the science of the eye. Her exhibition,‘Science of Sight.’ ran for three days in August and around2,500 people engaged with the scientists as they showcasedthe latest discoveries in eye research.

The exhibition, supported by the National Institute forHealth Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre atMoorfi elds and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, includeddemonstrations on how our eyes work using models, scentand sound boxes and tactile blood cells. Art was a keyfeature of the exhibition with sensory pieces on display fromthe ‘Blind Art’ collection at Moorfi elds, which is sponsored byFriends. Visitors were encouraged to touch, smell and listento art to show how it can be created and enjoyed by peoplewith sight loss.
