Steers to £1350 Heifers to £1090
Although we saw excellent numbers forward for the time of year here at Exeter, Friday’s show wasn’t the most eye catching
entry quality-wise seen of late. Top priced steers came from Robert & Janet Legg of Exeter with their trio of strong of Simmental steers (23m) reaching £1350 apiece whilst a very decent bunch of five Limousin steers (25m) saw £1190 for the Johns family of
Lapford, the latter also taking home £1045 a life for a pen of four heifers (21m) of the same breed. Robert Shilston, Bovey Tracey sold Blonde and Fleckvieh steers (25m) to £1125 and £1110 respectively with a pair of Blue heifers (26m) from the same good
home to £1065. Hereford steers (23m) from FC Champion, Liskeard sold well and to £1100 with similar others close at £1095 for JW Davies & Sons of Uplowman. Friesian steers (28m) from Ross Govier of Longdown sold readily to £935 whilst later born
store steers saw £925 for SG Brimacombe & Sons Yeoford and Steve & Susan Sallis, Jacobstowe both with shapely Blues (15m). No real strength in the heifer department although a pen of three smart Salers (21m) from R & B Boundy, Winkleigh did climb
to £1090 a life. Other store heifers of note included Limousin’s (18m) selling to £995 for Steve & Susan Sallis, Blue’s (30m) to £985 for JW Davies & Sons and Charolais (24m) at £950 for Henk & Neil Boeijink of Meeth. Blue heifers (13m) looked good
money at £870 for SG Brimacombe & Sons.
A good entry of over 100 youngstock forward on Friday met a strong trade throughout with the best topping £865 for Alan Cottle of Bratton Fleming with smart Charolais steers (10m), others off the same farm realised £835 with Malcolm Harris of
Slapton attaining £790 for his Charolais steers (9m). A nice entry from SG Brimacombe & Sons, Yeoford saw Blue steers (11m) topping at £705 and SJ Hatherley & K Rendle up from Plymouth attained the same figures for Charolais crosses (9m). Angus
steers (10m) from S Tucker of Exeter achieved £680, Peter Jones of Bratton Clovelly hit £665 for Blue steers (8m), with others realising £645. Michael & Jean Turner of East Allington achieved £650 for Simmental crosses (9m). A larger entry of heifers saw
the best top at £785 for Char crosses (12m) from Richard Beckley of Black Dog, Blue heifers (10m) from SG Brimacombe & Sons realised £690, with other to £650. Malcolm Harris hit £670 with his Charolais cross heifers (9m) and Charles Mudge of
Tavistock attained £660 with South Devon’s. Simmental cross Heifers from Michael & Jean Turner realised £645, and Blue cross heifers from Peter Jones attained £605.

Only 39 orphans lambs after last week’s mammoth entry sold to £24 for a young pure Suffolk from Peter Vooght of South
Brent, £20 (x3) for Rich & Angie Hunt of Stoke Gabriel and PJ Millman of Chulmleigh sold two pairs at £18 & £17. Plenty
of others trading from £10 to £17, nothing less than £8 and they averaged £15.
Another tidy entry of 1650 store hoggs were unbelievably dearer again reaching £113 & £101.50 for Jonathan Musgrave of
Yealmpton followed by Greendown Farm Ltd of Umberleigh at £105, £100 & £92.50 as Dennis Tapp of Rackenford had
two pens at £104 and another at £92. SMJ Payne of Washfield received £104, £99.50 & £90 for theirs, AM & JM Wimberley
of Moretonhampstead realised £99 & £94 of theirs and both Steve Huxter of Bridport and Keith Vincent of Grampound
saw their best realise £95.50. A further eight pens over £90 with plenty of medium sorts trading in the £80’s and longer
term hoggs in the £70’s. More hill bred hoggs and very smalls forward, trading from £22 to £50 and doing little to help the
overall average at £74.44, which is slightly dearer on the week.
Grazers sold to £82 for Suffolk crosses from Alan & Lisa Johns of Slapton who also had a mule at £70, £77.50 for a pair
from Kye Trevelyan of Westleigh and £74 for a penful from Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton.
Another sizable line-up of 222 Ewes with 328 Lambs at foot varied in quality and traded at a slightly lower level to last
week. The best reached £226 & £210 for young Dorset ewes with decent sized twin lambs (£75.33 & £70/life) from FA &
CJ Elsworthy of Witheridge who also topped the singles at £162 (£81/life) with the same comments. Further doubles at
£195 for Sam Wright of Chittlehamholt and £190 (x3) for smart Cheviot Mule and Scotch Halfbred doubles from Graham
Nicholls of Parracombe who followed with singles at £150 & £140 (x2). Helen Fuller of Simonsbath reached £184 with her
best doubles and seven pens of doubles realised £175 for separate vendors. The medium doubles looked every bit as dear
as previous weeks from £150 to £170 and the general run of singles were from £115 to £135. Averages of £143 per outfit
and £57.50 per life are a few pounds less than week and reflective of the quality.
A very good entry in terms of quantity and quality. New buyers adding to the existing team saw prices in all categories of the pig market
much improved.
Another superb entry of cull sows coming from farms as far afield as Helston in West Cornwall to Axminster on the Somerset border. Top call of the day was £187 given for a wonderful sow presented by Nigel & Sandra Tope of Blackawton, with others
from the same good farm at £158 and £156. Richard & Vicky Gibbins of Poltimore topped at £143 whilst a smart run from Richard Dunning topped at £143 with his best six averaging an impressive £141.50. Both Timmy Stockwell of Kinsbridge and
Chris Down of Budleigh Salterton saw their strong sows reach £135 and £138, and Jeremy Brown close up at £132 for the best of his team of fourteen. The best of the lighter sows came in from Julian Collings of Launceston reaching £117. Overall a much improved trade with market average at £129.70.
Good numbers and a good trade. Top call of the day was £122 given for a pen of six (96kg) prime pigs from Richard & Vicky Gibbins with Messrs JLH Vallis & Son of Bradnich close up at £120. Richard Knox hit £120 for his pen of five whilst Colin Gibbins
of Feniton in East Devon hit £114 and £113 for his line-up of twelve. Rupert Stockwell saw his two pens of medium weight (91kg)white prime pigs hit £108 going off to Bristol with the best of the lightweights from Messrs Millman of Chumleigh at £80/
A nice entry of store pigs topped at £46 for a pen of ten young white pigs on behalf of Chyarloe Farms of West Cornwall with others from the same home at £39 whilst Messrs Baker of Kennford hit £42. Mark Amos saw his best weaners at £40 and £36
with best ‘slip’ pigs to £22.
Our continued thanks go to all of our vendors and purchasers who trade pigs at Exeter regularly.
Hopefully trade will continue to improve so please ‘help us to help you’ by letting us know your entries as early
as possible so we can inform potential buyers.
Our next pig sale will be on Friday 9th March.
