Steers to £1380 Heifers to £1360
Store cattle of all ages and types were a colossal price!
Anyone intending selling store cattle this coming spring should seriously consider marketing
them now while prices are at this level.
Store steers sold to a high of £1380 given for a grand Simmental bullock (22m) from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock,
other steers to £1270 as their eye catching Simmental heifer (21m) topped that section at an impressive £1360. A run of
tremendous, well grown South Devon crossbred steers from John Warne of East Allington drew keen interest and rose
£1325 for a single (23m) and £1300 for a pair (21m) as his six averaged £1290. Whilst Simmental and Limousin steers (26m)
from David Drew of Lapford attained £1180 & £1175 respectively. More terrific store steers from Clive Timms of
Inwardleigh saw Limousin’s (19m) sell to £1070 and Simmental’s (20m) to £1065 but they were eclipsed by his well-fleshed
Blue heifers which saw a single make £1160 (26m) and a pair (19m) at £1130 apiece. Young Charolais steers (14m) from
Phil Hutching of Chagford looked a good price at £860 whilst the uplift in the Holstein Friesian store cattle price continued
as a pen of four (averaging 23m) made £805 for Tony West of South Zeal and £795 for a trio (25m) sold by Richard Hill
of Dunsford. Plenty of well covered heifers on offer and with the top three lots already mentioned others of note saw
£1065 for a pair of Blue’s (26m) from Mark & Rita Dunn of Cornworthy, £1035 for a couple of Charolais (26m) sold by
Edward & George Pollard from North Bovey and £1015 for a trio of Limousin’s (21m) from Dave & Monica Hannaford of
Ashburton. The best of a solid looking run of South Devon heifers from the Cuming Brothers of Moretonhampstead rose
to £1000 (25m.)
Steers to £835 Heifers to £570
As with their elders in the store cattle ring, youngstock were a very strong trade again on Friday as best steer stirks rose
to a mighty £835 for a bunch of six cracking Simmentals (9m) from Richard Beckley of Black Dog. A terrific run of ‘named
sired’ Angus cattle from Richard & Jean Tully of Brixham saw a high of £750 for a trio of steers (10m) with others to £730
for a pair, also a pen of four females of a similar age saw £570 apiece. A single Charolais steer (10m) from Phil Hutchings
off the top of Chagford hit £740 followed by his four Angus steers, again by a pedigree sire, which saw £730 each. Andrew
Bament, down from Brayford sold his young Angus steer stirks to £700 whilst Limousin steers (8m) fetched £685 for Karen
Pengelly of Blackawton. Later born sorts looked as dear as anything on the day with three Simmental steers (5m) getting
£670 apiece for John Hill of Clyst Honiton, Limousins (5m) to £575 for Winston Baker of Morebath and a couple of shapely
South Devon bulls (7m) from MPC Norman of Shaugh Prior saw £675 a head. Geoff Stone, Ogwell attained £550 for his
Limousin heifers whilst other females ran to £520 for a Simmental (5m) from John Hill and a matching bunch of six Angus
(9m) from Andrew Taylor of Exford realised £410 a life.
A slightly smaller entry saw a cracking run of quality
calves which sold to a super trade! Top of the day
was £440 for a British Blue bull from David
Mortimer of Sowton who sold others to £422.
Other Blue bulls to £320 for Messrs L & M Coles of
Sidbury. Three outstanding Charolais bulls from
Charles Mudge of Tavistock sold at £415, £392 &
£300. An outstanding Montbeliarde bull sold well at
£340 for Messrs JR Chapple & Son of Axminster.
Simmental bulls to £310 for Messrs C & EC Mills of
Sampford Peverell. Native calves a strong trade and
topped at £325 for a smart Aberdeen Angus bull
from Robert Hine of South Brent with others to
£300 for Messrs KF & L Mitcham of Axminster and
£255 for Messrs JR Chapple & Son. Hereford bulls
to £288 for Derek Burrough of Yarcombe and £258
& £255 for Duncan & Sally Maynard of Awliscombe.
Heifers an easier trade topping at £300 for a British Blue from David Mortimer with other Blue heifers to £258, £255 &
£245 for Roger & Sam Parris of Stockland and a Charolais heifer to £245 for Charles Mudge.

The largest entry so far this year of forty-one orphan lambs sold well to plenty of competition with tops of £28 for a small
black ewe lamb from Steve & Sarah Cole of Calverleigh and £25 (x2) for a matching pair from Chris Stephens of Bickington,
£24 (x2) for Graham Kivell of Ashreigney and also for Sam Wright of Chittlehamholt. £22 for a smart pure Texel ewe lamb
from John & Russell Stevens of Holwell, £21 for the best from Friend & Reeve of Sandford and a further ten lambs sold at
£20 to give an overall average of £17.71.
Almost 1500 stores of generally lesser quality were a similar trade for mediums and better while smaller or indifferent
sorts were slightly harder to rehome. The better end, but not always the biggest, sold to £78 for Tamar Farms LLP of
Tavistock, £74 (x2) for BEJ Hallett of Pennymoor, £73 for Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick and £71 & £70.50 for
Andrew Carter of Sidmouth. Whilst further smart pens sold at £70.50 for Adam Garthwaite of Torrington, £70 & £68 for
Andrew Palk of Marldon, £69.50 for both Alan Cottle of Bratton Fleming and Graham Heal of High Bickington and £69 for
four other vendors with six pens between them. Still plenty of medium keep hoggs trading well into the £60’s while smaller
longer term hoggs were anywhere from £45 to £61. Scruffy, tiny or hill bred sorts below that and appearing to drop slowly
each week. Overall average is back £2.47 to £57.53, although hogg for hogg we are not too far different from last week.
Dorset’s to £56.50 & £53.50 for John Fuke of Seaton as mules sold to £52.50 for DB Jones of Kings Stag and £51.50 for
John Canham of Hatherleigh.
A selection of goats of all shapes and sizes saw the bigger end sell well with cull nannies selling to £69, forward billies and
wethers to £68.50 and smaller lighter sorts to £46, all for David Verney of Bishops Nympton.
The bulk of the breeders today came from the
entire flock dispersal from Carolyn Squire of
Hurdwick Farm, Tavistock who was well
rewarded with her fine run of unscanned in lamb
flock aged ewes and line up of stock rams. The
Rams took the top prices with an older Texel
making £210, the two Blue Texel tups sold at
£180 & £140 while best of the Badger Faced
Welsh Mountains reached £80. The flock of
breeding ewes comprised of roughly half pure
Lleyn and half Zwartbles cross Lleyn, with the
purebred younger ewes selling to a premium at
£122 (x2), £121, £120 (x2), £118 & £116 while
the 6T-FM pure Lleyns sold to £101 (x2) and
£100 (x2). Best of the black sheep to £104 (x3)
& £98 (x2) for the older end, while the majority
of other smaller pens were £85 to £95 and all keenly bid for. Well done Carolyn for an exceptional flock of sheep that
really were a credit to you.
The only other breeders forward ahead of next week’s bumper entry were three pens of empty Mule Ewe Hoggs from
Tamar Farms LLP that all sold at £78.
89 Ewes with 119 lambs that generally lacked strength were a decent trade considering the weather and saw doubles to
£178 & £165 for strong healthy Dorset outfits from Helen Havill of Trusham, £155 for young lambs on old ewes from Sam
Wright of Chittlehamholt, £152 for similar comment mules from Ken Chapple of Oakford and £150 for Lleyn doubles from
Chris & Alison Crudge of Morebath. Singles sold to £135 for both John Fuke and Helen Havill with Dorset’s while £128
was seen four times, again for John Fuke and Chris & Alison Crudge and also twice for John & Diane Vooght of Dunsford.
Second quality sorts in abundance with doubles trading from £125-£148 and singles £95- £115 to give averages that were
back on the week of £123 per outfit (-£8) and £53.02 (-£1.81).

Most sectors within the agricultural industry are witnessing a reasonably positive outlook as we enter the
month of February. Both the sheep and cattle industries are seeing encouraging store prices, the dairy
sector seems to have turned a corner and the arable men are set to receive grain prices that are somewhat
more appealing in contrast to previous years.
As I write this month’s Rural Reflection the cold weather continues to prevail across the South West. The
hard frosts witnessed over the past couple of weeks have allowed for farmyard manure and slurry to be
removed from the farmstead and deposited over the land. An important issue to highlight concerning this
matter, is the government’s expansion of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs). If the expansion of the NVZ
affects your property, DEFRA should be making contact with you shortly. Please remember there are
various regulations that must be adhered to if your land is situated in an NVZ area. Any questions regarding
regulations or the expansion of NVZs please get in touch.
The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) have announced (Tuesday 24th January) that they have met their target
of paying 90% of farmers by the end of December 2016 and further suggested that they have to date paid
93% of eligible claimants their BPS claims. For the large proportion that have received payment this is
welcomed news; for those who have yet to receive any payment the RPA have stated that they will be
writing to each claimant explaining the reasons for the payment holdup. It is worth mentioning that we
are currently acting for a number of clients to resolve unpaid claims. The RPA have employed specific case
workers to deal with each case of an unpaid claim, with whom we are often in contact with. If you have an
unpaid claim or part claim and require assistance then we are more than happy to assist in contacting the
RPA to help resolve the matter.
Moving onto the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship saga and having recently spoken to Natural England at
Bristol, they are still in the process of checking through applications. No specific date was issued with
regards to informing applicants whether they were successful or not. Although, it was stated that if you
haven’t heard anything to date it is likely Natural England will have granted a Mid – Tier agreement,
whether it is similar to the application submitted last year, only time will tell. One thing is for certain
though, Natural England have stated that all agreements will still commence from the 1st January 2017.
As we move into the final months of winter, clients are starting to consider grazing arrangements for this
coming spring. We are already having a number of clients discussing the preparation of grazing agreements
together with clients enquiring into the availability of grazing facilities throughout the South West. If you
are contemplating letting out your land for grazing and require assistance then, please get in touch with
one of the Professional Team who can undertake the requirements in implementing a correctly
documented grazing agreement.
Rural Reflection February 2017
This month the Professional Team at Kivells have been busy undertaking numerous compensation claims
relating to a number of different scenarios. Compensation claims that often relate to a national
organisation entering land to repair damaged electrical or water services. The Professional Team at Kivells
undertake a hands on approach whereby acting for the landowner or occupier we ensure you are well
compensated for any losses, damages or disturbance caused. It may be that the national organisation and
their appointed contractors have made minimal damage apart from tracking across an area of permanent
pasture. You have the rights to be compensated on the loss of that area of permanent pasture so please
make full use of them. It is also worth mentioning that all professional fees are met by the company which
have caused the damage or disturbance.
An ongoing matter which is slowly building momentum is the renewal and construction work taking place
on steel pylons and cables leading from Plymouth to Exeter. Tom Rattray and I are currently acting for a
number of different clients, whether tenant farmers or owner occupiers, who are affected by the required
works, and we are actively working with the national organisation undertaking the works to minimise
damage and disturbance. As previously stated at the end of 2016, the required works are not going to be
straightforward. Similar to the above paragraph we fully recommend that you have an agent acting on
your behalf, to deal with matters before the works take place, but to also settle claims once the works
have been completed. All our fees are charged to the national organisation, if you have any questions
please do not hesitate to contact Tom or myself.
Finally, Kivells have undertaken a number of successful fodder sales at each of our livestock markets
throughout the South West. Here at Exeter we have excellent facilities and a good following of potential
buyers who attend the livestock market most Fridays. We are currently receiving further entries for our
next sale on Friday 17th February. If you have entries for the sale or require a catalogue then please do get
in touch.
