It Might Preach! TRANSMITNG THE GOSPEL
Psalm 78:1-8
Introduction: The church in America has not successfully passed the gospel from one generation to another (illus. Rainer, The Bridger Generation). Fewer and fewer children and youth are following Christ after high school (if then). The early part of the Psalm (vv.1-8) calls for a clear transmission of God’s Word from one generation to another. At least three questions are answered with regard to the transfer of the gospel. I. WHO is primarily responsible for transmitting the gospel? A. OUR FATHERS have told US (vv.3, 5b)
• Psalm 44:1 B. WE must tell OUR CHILDREN (vv.4b, 6a)
• Deut. 6:6-7 C. OUR CHILDREN must tell THEIR CHILDREN (v.6b)
• Psalm 22:30-31
II. WHAT IS IT EXACTLY, that we are responsible to transmit? A. We are responsible to pass on the WORD OF GOD (vv. 2b, 5a)
• Psalm 19:7-8 B. We are responsible to pass on the WORSHIP OF GOD (v.4c)
• Psalm 71:6c, 14b
C. We are responsible to pass on the WORK OF GOD (vv.4d, 7b) • Psalm 71:17 • Philippians 2:13
III. WHY IS THE GOSPEL NOT TRANSMITTED? (notice the four negative characteristics that contribute to our negligence in transmitting the gospel to the next generation:) A. Because of the STUBBORNNESS of the previous generation (v.8a)
• Deut. 9:6 • Psalm 81:12-13
B. Because of the REBELLION of the previous generation (v.8b) • Psalm 78:40
C. Because of the HEARTLESS COMMITMENT of the previous generation (v.8c).
• Psalm 78:37 • Psalm 51:10 • Isaiah 29:13
D. Because of the UNFAITHFULNESS of the previous generation (v.8d) • Psalm 74:27
CONCLUSION. This Psalm shows us the importance and urgency of passing on the gospel story from one generation to the next. The Psalm closes with a powerful prayer for a revival of gospel transmission. “Revive us, and we will call upon Your name. O Lord God of hosts, restore us; cause Your face to shine upon us, and we will be saved.” (Ps. 80:18-19) — rrc
You may or may not be aware that over our many years in ministry (40+) we have had numerous opportunities to train and equip Deacons and their wives for more effective service in the church. Much of this training has been put into a devo-tional format for our Deacons to use year after year. I have recently published a book entitled Daily Devotions for Deacons: 260 Instructional and Inspirational Devotions. The book has been published by Cross-books Publishing, a division of Lifeway and can be obtained on their website (crossbooks.com/bookstore and enter the title on the search bar). However, I have ordered and reserved for each PLBA Pastor two complimentary copies - one for the Pastor and one for the current Deacon Chairman. These copies are in our associa-tion office and available for you to pick up at your convenience. It is my earnest prayer that this book will bring great encouragement to our churches as well as each Deacon Body. Hopefully, it will raise the level of ser-vanthood and provide much needed focus and expansion of ministry to the entire congregation over time. You may contact me at my office by calling 405-273-4558 or by email at [email protected] with any questions or for further information. I want to thank all of our Pastors and Deacons for their faithful service to their church, to our associa-tion and to the Kingdom of God. May God be pleased to eventually get these devo-tions into the hands—and especially the hearts—of all our Deacons. Encouragingly Yours, Russell R. Cook

Cabin Available for Falls Creek Youth Week, July 2 - 7, 2012
Our association has made the decision not to host an “Associational Youth Week” this year, as we have in the past. In-stead, we are encouraging churches that have room to invite a smaller or similar sized group to go with them. The association has put a deposit down on the Ochelata cabin and will gladly transfer that to a PLBA church in need of a cabin. The weekly rental is $2,250. Should no PLBA church take this cabin by the end of April we will make it available to any other Oklahoma church. If your church is interested or if you know a church that is interested, please call Janice at 405-273-4558 or email her at [email protected]

BOOK NOOK Cruel and Usual Punishment by Nonie Darwish (Thomas Nelson, Publisher) Nonie Darwish lived for thirty years in a majority Muslim nation under Sharia law. She now lives in the West and brings a warning of the agenda to bring Sharia law to other countries. She says demands in seemingly random places are test cases to see how far Westerners will go in being accommodating. Darwish intertwines personal experi-ence with extensive documentation and research to reveal a global threat. In a very telling paragraph, she shares how she found comfort and liberation and unity and humility in understanding that we are ALL sinners and that forgiveness is found only through the grace of God! We don’t have to kill “the real sinners” in bloody battles to guarantee salvation!
BLANKET THE STATE The photos shown reveal how unexpectedly a new ministry can begin. Several years ago I walked into Emmanuel, McLoud, with Russell where he would teach their Win-ter Bible Study. In the foyer was this crib, filled with baby clothes and other baby items and blankets, just as you see here. Intrigued, I inquired and was told this is an annual event at their church...to fill the crib with these items for one of our Hope Pregnancy Centers in OKC. I had never seen blankets made exactly like these, so one lady drew a “pattern” for me on a little yellow sheet of paper. Little did she or I know that before long God would begin to throw open the doors for this little “pattern” to become the basis of a whole new ministry across the state, as Baptists began to commit to “Blanket the State With Life and Love.” So far over 2000 blankets have been given away to people with many kinds of needs! They have a label and a Gift Card that carry the message of love and the Gospel. They are made by children, teens, and adults. When Russell and I returned last month to Emmanuel for his 10th year to teach there, I was excited to see the crib as you see pictured sitting there again and wanted to share it with all of you! They are continuing their annual ministry but now have added the ministry of helping with Blanket the State! Please contact me at [email protected] to see how YOU can help! LITTLE IS MUCH IN THE HANDS OF THE LORD!
A NUGGET FROM MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY... When Mother was in her 60’s or 70’s she once made a memorable comment: “You know, Marsha, as long as your daddy and I have been married, I thought we would know each other so well by now. But, he still surprises me and I’m still learning new things about him!” Now I find I’m thinking the same thing about Russell recently (as he probably is about me)! There’s nothing like extended time together (like a Sabbati-cal) and moving to a new home together to discover there are still things to learn about each other. When you are alone together a lot, you find you may need to work on communication skills that still need developing! When you’ve been married 40 years and you move after nine years in one house, you find you both have pre-conceived ideas and habits that must be dealt with as you each try to settle into new surroundings! Simple things like where things go and new ways to function in a new environment may still come as a surprise to one another. Yes, those details eventu-ally get settled, but HOW? That is the true question! Do pre-conceived notions and habits stand in the way of loving compromise or the adventure of doing life a little differently? We all have our comfort zones which get more entrenched day by day. How about the next time GOD asks us to do something outside our comfort zones or in a new way? Do we know HIM and love HIM well enough to listen and to work together with HIM? Or does He find US in a rut of “Well, Lord, I’ve ALWAYS done it this way!?!” Hmmm...food for thought, huh? - MARSHA COOK, WM&M Leader
