Executive Director, Advancement and Alumni Fanshawe College

THE OPPORTUNITY Fanshawe College is seeking an Executive Director, Advancement and Alumni to lead our fundraising and alumni relations following the success of Remarkable! The Campaign for Fanshawe College. Reporting to the Vice-President, Corporate Strategy & Business Development, the Executive Director will lead a team of 17 – providing strategic and operational leadership while acting as the chief executive officer for the Fanshawe College Foundation. Along with the President, the Executive Director, Advancement and Alumni will be the face of College in our communities, and will work closely with the Senior Management Team, the College Board of Governors, and the Foundation Board of Directors to fulfill our exciting new strategic goals. This is an outstanding opportunity for a seasoned and experienced fundraising professional who is passionate about continuing education and can build a program to meet the needs and priorities of Fanshawe College – ultimately benefitting our students, our faculty, and the communities we serve.

ABOUT FANSHAWE COLLEGE Fanshawe is a large comprehensive college that has experienced significant enrolment growth over the past four years, fueled largely by an aggressive program development/renewal initiative focused on meeting regional, provincial, national and global labour market needs. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The Executive Director, Advancement and Alumni will be a fundraising generalist with significant expertise and proven experience in capital campaigns, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, corporate partnerships, and in delivering outstanding alumni relations programs. A forward-thinking, creative and innovative strategist, the ideal candidate will possess business acumen, operational-savvy, and organizational proficiency. The new incumbent will strategically build and foster internal and external relationships, with genuine appreciation for the contributions of our donors, alumni, volunteers, and partners. The ideal candidate will collaborate with academic leaders to define funding priorities fully aligned with the College’s goals. Articulate and adept at communicating compelling narratives, the successful candidate will showcase and share stories of our students’ success. Providing leadership based on clarity, rigour and accountability, the Executive Director will strive to deliver measurable, metric-based contributions to the College. The new incumbent will encourage best practice fundraising and discipline to ensure all opportunities are leveraged and maximized. Instilling a call culture, “out the door” approach, the successful candidate will be an inspirational coach to our advancement and alumni team, guiding and enabling them to reach their highest potential. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Strategic Planning and Fundraising

Develops the College’s annual and long-term fund raising and partnership goals.

Develops and implements strategies and plans to ensure that the college meets its fundraising and partnership goals.

Develops long and short term plans, revisits, modifies measures productivity, etc.

Prepares proposals and coordinates with senior college administration or other college personnel, initiatives directed to the establishment of partnerships in support of the foundation (and College).

Identifies needs, then plans and effectively executes requests for financial support for buildings, renovations, equipment, and other such resources as deemed necessary or desirable on an ongoing basis.

Plans and implements cultivation and solicitation calls, reviews performance of these calls on a regular basis to evaluate relevance and impact, and recommends revised strategy if necessary.

Cultivates relationships with potential donors, including foundations and corporations as well as monthly, annual, planned giving and major gift donors through face-to-face meeting.

Implements a stewardship program for donors, records and plans all stewardship activities on Raiser's Edge and reviews performance of stewardship activities on a regular basis to evaluate relevance and impact.

Provides strategic direction to the fundraising program as it relates to corporate, individual and foundation prospects. Leads any capital campaign undertakings.

Develops contacts and strategies for major asks.

Provides strategic direction to departmental staff pertaining to fund raising, attends College committee meetings as appropriate, attends prospect calls, volunteer meetings, and develops comprehensive solicitation and stewardship strategies for lead corporate, foundation and individual donors and other prospects, involving the President, Board of Directors, volunteers and other staff when necessary.

Recruits community leaders for the Foundation Board and provides ongoing overall leadership and support to that Board.

Administration of the Advancement and Alumni Office

Ensures that operations of the Foundation are within the guidelines established by the Foundation Board of Directors and CRA.

Assists in the establishment of relevant guidelines, procedures etc. (i.e. Endowment and investment policies).

Accountable to ensure the financial integrity of the Foundation, ensuring the efficient use and safeguarding of its assets through appropriate financial controls and accounting procedures. Ensures appropriate reporting standards of all financial donations or gifts in kind. Responsible for the appropriate allocation of funds, oversees their investment and is responsible to ensure the provision of an audited annual statement and interim financial reports (as deemed necessary and advisable) to the Board of Directors.

Provides supervision and leadership to Advancement and Alumni staff in their responsibilities to prepare for initiatives and requests for financial support and ongoing developmental duties.

Responsible for the development of all related communication documents (fundraising/partnership materials, press releases, etc.)

Undertakes other projects to cultivate a fund raising culture with stake holders both within and external to the College, promotes community outreach and generates goodwill towards fundraising programs.

Liaises with the appropriate staff to assist in the development and delivery of fund development programs.

Identifies, analyzes and problem-solves situations that impact or that may affect the College’s ability to achieve its philanthropic financial goals.

Ensures that the College has a clear understanding of current market conditions and trends and has identified the target markets for new donor development activities.

Provides detailed and current information on the activities and progress of the Foundation initiatives and projects to the President, the Foundation Board of Directors and its committees.

Assists, guides, and provides expert advice to the Foundation Board in its endeavours including Board member recruitment and orientation, meeting arrangements, annual planning process and committee structures.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES Proven track record closing major gifts, ideally in the context of a capital campaign.

Substantial and progressive experience in leadership and management roles, ideally in a large and multi-layered complex fundraising organization, with a regional scope.

Experience working with senior management, Board level volunteers and volunteer fundraising committees.

Ability to build/manage relationships with leaders in the charitable/corporate/government sectors.

Strong strategic, business and fundraising planning, implementation and management skills.

Demonstrated track record closing major gifts and securing sponsors.

Ability to set and meet ambitious, strategic goals.

Results orientation with excellent planning, analytical and organizational skills.

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and strong listening and presentation skills.

High emotional intelligence (i.e. self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, etc.) with demonstrated collaborative, collegial style.

Current police records check and Vulnerable Sector Search will be required.

University degree in related field.

CRFE designation or equivalent.

This position requires frequent local travel, a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

BIOGRAPHY Peter J. Devlin Fanshawe College President

Peter Devlin was appointed Fanshawe College's fifth President effective September 2013. Prior to joining Fanshawe, President Devlin served 35 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and retired commanding the Canadian Army at the rank of Lieutenant General. He has several UN, NATO and Coalition tours and his awards include Orders of Military Merit from the United States, Brazil and Colombia as well as the Canadian Meritorious Service Cross, France’s National Order of the Legion of Honour and Commander of the Canadian Order of Military Merit. President Devlin serves on provincial and national college committees. These include the Ontario Colleges Library Service Board, the Colleges Ontario Committee of Presidents, Nominating Committee and Committee of Presidents Executive Committee. He is a member of Colleges and Institutes Canada’s Presidents Leadership Network and a Director on the Polytechnics Canada Board. Peter serves on the London Economic Development

Corporation’s Board of Directors, is a member of the lvey Business School Leadership Council and the United Way Campaign Cabinet. President Devlin received an undergraduate degree in Honours Economics from Western University, a graduate degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College and a certificate in Advanced Executive Management from Queen's University. He has also studied at Command and Staff Colleges of the Canadian Defence Academy. Peter has been married for 33 years, and together he and his wife Judy have four children.

BIOGRAPHY Jeff Wright Vice-President of Corporate Strategy and Business Development

Jeff Wright has been at Fanshawe College for 9 years. He is currently the Vice-President of Corporate Strategy and Business Development. In this role he leads strategic planning and business development, Foundation and alumni services, international student recruitment, and reputation and brand management (marketing, corporate communications, and domestic student recruitment). Former roles at the College included Associate Vice-President of Strategy, and Executive Director of Strategy and Planning. Jeff came to Fanshawe from the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) where for 5 years he was the Director of Research and Outcome Measurement and acted as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Strategic Policy and Planning. Previously Jeff worked for the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services – in a variety of progressive roles – where he oversaw operational policy and standards development, planned and implemented an internal applied

research and evaluation division, and project managed several key enterprise policy, program and capital initiatives. Jeff has authored or co-authored government and journal publications focusing primarily on program and organizational effectiveness. He has been the recipient of 13 Excellence Canada awards for leadership in the areas of applied research, innovation and quality. Jeff has also taught part-time in university and college settings in the areas of: social policy, research methods, program evaluation, marketing, and business leadership. Jeff is an active community volunteer. He is currently on the Boards of the London Health Sciences Centre, London Health Sciences Foundation and the Lawson Health Research Institute and is a member of the London Mayor’s Economic Advisory Panel. Jeff has completed graduate programs in social work and business administration. He is also a graduate of the Rotman School of Management Strategic Executive Program. He is currently completing his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Western University where he will defend his dissertation in spring, 2018. Jeff is married to JoEllen and is the father of three children, Neave (20), Jack (19) and Ben (16).
