Real People, Real Stories Finding Balance Laura reached out to a Work/Life Specialist to find someone to assist her father with meals while she was at work, and to locate a daycare center for her preschooler. The Specialist quickly located home care agencies to help with her father’s meals. He also confirmed that

there were openings at several daycare facilities near Laura’s home.

“I’m relieved that my Dad and daughter got the right care.”

Caregiver Burnout?Advice From Our ExpertsMany people caring for an older adult tend to push themselves too hard. This can lead to feeling “burned out”. To create a healthy balance between caring for others and yourself, our EAP Counselors suggest the following:

Define the problem. Set limits on your time and energy.

Decide on strategies. Figure out what you can reasonably do and what resources you may need. If you decide you’ll visit your mother twice a week to cook, then enlist family members to help on other days.

Find personal support. For example, caregiver support groups can be helpful for sharing resources and offering encouragement.

Feeling overwhelmed by family obligations or other issues? Turn to your EAP Licensed Professional Counselor for support.

I do warm-up exercises, squats and lunges while I wait for my water to boil in the morning. Bonnie

While I’m watching my favorite TV show, I do jumping jacks, sit-ups and leg lifts during the commercials. When the hour-long show is over, I’ve gotten a good cardio, upper body, and core workout. Cindy
