The holidays are often a hectic time and can place a strain on your time, emotions, relationships and ability to perform at your best. Many people feel overwhelmed and turn to overeating, alcohol, or other destructive coping methods.

Our experts can help you find and use healthier ways to cope with stress, anxiety and worry this season and throughout the year. We offer the support, resources, and referrals you need to better balance your work and life and help you regain a sense of control and well-being. The service is FREE and completely confidential.

In this issue, you’ll discover how…

A Licensed Professional Counselor can suggest effective strategies for approaching the underlying stressors that may be triggering harmful behaviors.

A Work/Life Specialist can help you locate the right resources like caregiving services for much needed relief.

The EAP+Work/Life website provides articles, videos and checklists with practical information about time management, effective communication skills, caregiving resources, and much more.

Real People, Real Stories

Relief for Emotional EatingA national survey showed that nearly half of Americans (48 percent) reported overeating or eating unhealthy foods to manage stress.

When Lauren realized her stress and poor eating habits were getting out of control, she turned to her EAP Counselor for help.

The Counselor helped her recognize the difference between true hunger versus emotional eating, and the triggers that made her turn to food for comfort. Lauren also learned healthy ways to face difficult emotions.

“My Counselor recommended yoga and it really helps me stay calm when I’m anxious.”

Do you or a loved one turn to food, alcohol, drugs, or another unhealthy habit to ease stress or numb emotional pain? Just call us anytime! We’re here to help.Source: American Psychological Association

Communicate Better with Your PartnerWe Can Help Many couples experience a communication breakdown when trying to work out their differences. Our EAP Counselors are experts in helping partners communicate more effectively. We asked one of our Counselors for tips to help overcome common communication blocks. Here are three suggestions:

Take a break when emotions escalate. Heated discussions can quickly turn into a full-blown conflict.

Avoid playing the blame game. Take time to reflect. Try stating, “Next time I think I could...”.

Learn to listen! Are you more interested in getting your views across than stopping to understand your partner’s position on the subject? If so, try pausing, repeating back what you heard, and asking for clarification. You’ll gain a deeper appreciation of your partner’s viewpoint.

No matter what your issue, your EAP Counselor can help you learn productive communication skills to resolve conflicts and strengthen your relationship. Call: 866.799.2691
