SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTImportant Information for Senior StudentsWe are almost half way through Term 2. Year 12 have completed their second last set of examinations before leaving school to sit the HSC. Work placement requirements for their VET courses are also, in many cases, complete. This is the time our Year 12 students need to be “hunkering down” and focusing almost exclusively on the challenges of achieving their best for the HSC. There are only weeks to go now.

For a number of our Year 11s the reality of the HSC requirements and the quantity of work required to meet them is beginning to dawn. Many of them realise it is already midway through the course and from here on it is a run to the finish of Year 11 in September. The challenge for teachers is to motivate these students to persist and achieve their best. The NSW Education Standards Authority has made mandatory changes to the way students are assessed in Year 11 and Year 12. From this year schools can only schedule 3 formal assessment tasks for students in Year 11 and 4 in Year 12. This being the case, in order to assess as broad a portion of the course as possible, there will only be one set of exams at the end of the course in September. The other 2 assessment tasks will become much more heavily weighted and therefore more complex. For this year, there will be no mid-course report in term 3 of the Year 11 course. The school will review this decision before the 2019 Yr11 assessment calendar is set.

At this school our primary goal is to ensure that students achieve their best outcomes to prepare for life after leaving school. To do that we must, as a school, focus on meeting the academic and curriculum requirements set by the state. Complimenting this central purpose we encourage our students to make the most of the opportunities offered through our co-curricula programs in sport, the arts, community engagement and culture. To be eligible to participate in these other programs, students have signed documents agreeing to regular attendance and to keeping up to date with their classwork and assessments. It goes without saying that students who are representing the school demonstrate pride in themselves, our school and its uniform by always behaving in a manner appropriate to being a school representative. Students who demonstrate that they are not capable of doing so and who may pose a risk to their own safety or the safety of others will make themselves ineligible to participate.

NAPLAN is wrapping up for Years 7 and 9. Congratulations to the support staff and students involved in this inaugural year of online testing. A mammoth task was undertaken with almost flawless organisation by Mr Topper and Mr Conlon. The process will now be evaluated before planning commences for next year.

HSC Subject Selection InformationJune 4th is an important night for Year 10 students who are intending to be at Tweed River High School in 2019. HSC subject selection information will be presented to all parents and students at 6:30pm in the HALL on that night. It is expected that all year 10 students attend that meeting and parents are encouraged to attend. This evening will be followed by sessions with the Careers Adviser and finally an interview with a member of the executive to discuss subject patterns and post school aspirations before students enter their subject selections for 2019 online. Selections will close at 8:20am on June 22nd. It is essential for a smooth start to the academic year in Year 11 that students choose subjects based on their interests and proven ability. Mr Williams, our careers adviser, will be able to assist students in navigating the myriad of pathways now available to students to gain post school qualifications without necessarily attempting HSC courses which are beyond their ability.

We look forward to working with students and parents as we commence planning for 2019.

Mr Mackney, Deputy Principal

Media Release 21st May 2018

STUDENTS TO WELCOME CALVES TO THE PLAYGROUND

Excited secondary students across Lismore NSW region are preparing to welcome some special visitors to their school.

Through Dairy Australia’s Cows Create Careers – Farm Module project, the students will learn about dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way: over roughly three weeks they will rear and care for two three-week-old calves.

In 2018 fifteen schools in the Lismore region will participate in the project including Ballina Coast High School, McAuley Catholic College, Tweed River High School, Marymount College, Evans River Community School, Kingscliff High School, Richmond River High School, Alstonville High School, Nimbin Central School, Rivers Secondary College – Kadina High Campus, St John’s College Woodlawn, Bonalbo Central School, Maclean High School, Kyogle High School and Casino High School.

A local dairy farmer will teach the students how to care for the calves, and demonstrate skills such as animal husbandry, feeding and weighing. An Industry Advocate will also visit the students to speak about their career in the dairy industry.

Each school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7-11, at no cost. Over the weeks, students are required to form teams to complete industry-based assessments.

Sally Roberts, Program Manager – Workforce Development at Dairy Australia said that the innovative project shines a light on the diversity of professional careers within Australia’s vibrant dairy industry.

“Cows Create Careers allows students to learn about the different skills required for a career in the dairy industry in a fun and hands-on way," Ms Roberts said.

“However the benefits of Cows Create Careers extends beyond the classroom. The project increases awareness of the dairy industry and builds strong connections with the local community – all while showcasing the wide-range of university, vocational and professional pathways within the industry."

Cows Create Careers was originally established in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. Since 2006 the project has been supported by Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors. It has now grown to over 244 schools across Australia with 13,163 students completing the project in 2017.

“The project’s passionate volunteers are vital to the ongoing success of Cows Create Careers. Last year alone 466 volunteers gave 2,330 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions,” Ms Roberts said.

“Volunteers represent a wide-range of professional dairy careers. They speak to the students about their experiences in the industry, they support students in career decision making, and they have important links to education and employment sectors.”

Locally, the project is funded by Subtropical Dairy and receives additional support across the state from local companies Parmalat, Norco, Dasco, Daviesway, Skellerup and Peach Teats who have continued to support the project in the Lismore region.

Upon completion of the project, students and teachers will be recognised at an interactive Presentation Day, where there will be industry-based games and prizes awarded to the winning teams and schools.
