In the three months following Brexit on June 24, London’s hotel prices have fallen. But not just London, other major cities across the UK this month have seen room rates drop. According to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) in comparison to July, London hotel prices have dropped by 16 per cent, from an average of £171 to an average of £143 during August. Hotels in Edinburgh escaped this fate because they hosted the International and Fringe festivals and subsequently saw a 35 per cent increase in hotel prices, from £150 per night in July to £202 in August. As the table above shows, London hotel prices are currently at their lowest since March, at an average of £143 per night. This is a 16 per cent decrease from July and a 15 per cent decrease from August 2015, when a hotel room cost an average of £169 per night. by Jacqueline Thompson WHAT'S INSIDE? Lets come together to cheer on the CNN SPURS!!! A MESSAGE FROM CNN PRESIDENT ERNIE OVEREEM I want to write about two things that are important to any non-profit organization. Change and volunteers. Change occurs all the time around us, and although we may not see it or like it, change is required for organizations to remain relevant. Another thing required for organizations to remain relevant is volunteers, not always more volunteers, but the right volunteers with the right mindset doing the right tasks. This year we have changed our logo and all jerseys have been updated to the new design and colors. This is the most obvious change of the past few years but is far from the only one. We have seen the Hockey Alberta Introduction to Hockey program impact Initiation with half ice a few years ago. Since then, the Introduction to Hockey program has been expanded to the Novice level and is mandatory across Alberta this season. There are new season structures, a 4v4 playing style and gameplay that is intended to support skill development as opposed to competition at an early age. Some of this was introduced at CNN last season, this season games will be coordinated through the Northern Alberta Interlock for Novice, similar to the other levels. Another change for this year is the Provincial playdown format. In the past, associations were matched up based purely on the size of their membership at that individual level. The playdowns would occur in Jan-Feb for Zones and the Zone Champions would then play each other for the Provincial title. This year for Peewee, Bantam and Midget, the league champions for the higher tiers will play each other at season’s end for the Provincial Championship. Atom will continue with the legacy format for this season and will likely change to align next season. Other items being looked at include the Atom Pathway, contact hockey in Bantam and Midget, hockey boundaries in Alberta among many others. One thing that hasn’t changed is the need for volunteers to make a local hockey association effective. I attend Hockey Alberta and league meetings with other associations and I always come away impressed with how many volunteers we have in CNN and how much work that the volunteers put into what they do. From the board members who put in many hours behind the scene all year long, to the coaches, managers and other team volunteers we are lucky in CNN to have as many people willing to put in their time as we do. I believe that we have some of the best people that put in their time for CNN and in order to make our association sustainable, I believe that we need to work on recognizing these individuals and on trying to make their roles within CNN as clear and rewarding as possible. If you have an opportunity to thank one of these volunteers, please do so. If you are one of these volunteers, I thank you for your time and dedication to CNN. Ernie Overeem
