exams, with final rehearsals for next week’s Talent Show ...€¦ · Thank you for your feedback...

The school has been buzzing this week, in between the silenced concentration of school exams, with final rehearsals for next week’s Talent Show. This is always a highlight of the summer term calendar. I am delighted to see, once again, that the programme contains not only a good range of acts, but also representatives from across the year groups. We will be entertained by comedians, dancers, singers, magicians and our first, I believe, pogo sticking duo! Thank you to all the children who auditioned and congratulations to those who made it through to the ‘live finals’. This half term will come to a rapturous close as the final curtain falls on Friday night. My thanks go to Paige and the Skylarks team who, today, have given their children a most wonderful time at Birdworld. There was plenty to do and see with some exotic birds mixing their song with some more recognisable species. 42 three and four year olds out on a school trip may phase many. Not the staff and pupils of Hazelwood School! With the impeccable behaviour of the children evident at all times and the warm weather making an outdoor picnic a pleasure, Paige and her team were also able to enjoy the parrots, penguins, peacocks, owls and flamingos! The Lady Amherst Pheasant was, I believe, particularly striking. It is a testament to the dedication of the school and nursery staff that we are able to extend the benefits, which such an offsite activity brings, to our youngest pupils. I am sure it will be a highlight of their summer term. I am equally confident that there was some shut-eye enjoyed on the coach ride home. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Matt Weeks on being appointed as our Nursery Manager on a permanent basis. Matt has been Acting Nursery Manager since Jane left at the end of March. This week we interviewed a strong field of applicants for the permanent role moving forward and I am delighted to say that Matt was head and shoulders above the pretenders to the role. He demonstrated a thirst and drive for levels of invention and excellence as well as clearly putting the needs and progress of all the nursery children at the heart of his own ambition and focus. Well done Matt. I know that he, Howard and Vicki will make a formidable team, taking the nursery from strength to strength in the months and years to come. I would also like to pass on our congratulations to four members of staff (three mums to be and one dad to be) who are expecting babies over the next six months. For Mrs Falconer and Mrs Cochrane, the happy event will be their first. For Mr and Mrs MacDougall, it will be baby Number 3, a sister for Freddie and Bertie. Mrs Falconer will be leaving after the half term holiday. Her role as Acting Head of Girls’ Games will be taken by Mrs Hardgrave,

an excellent teacher who has served the school well for many years. She is an excellent role model for the girls. Mrs MacDougall and Mrs Cochrane will be with us until the end of term. Provision is already in place to cover their responsibilities, whilst we await their return at some point during the 2018-19 academic year. Exact details will be shared nearer to the time along with news of our very successful recruitment drive to fill those positions vacated by departing staff. I am excited about the shape of the staff team for next year. I know they will each bring much energy and expertise to the school community. Next week too I will finally be able to share with you the results of our Year 6 pupils’ assessments to secure Year 9 places at Caterham School and Brighton College – two of our most academically demanding Senior Schools. I am very proud of all their achievements. More to follow… Finally, whether you are a royalist, a football fanatic or you are looking forward to the weekend to relax in the sunshine, I hope that it brings you plenty about which to cheer.

News from The Nursery & Early Years

Another wonderful week has come to end here at HNEY. The children have once again had a magnificent week, filled with lots of activities to help with their learning. I have been amazed this week by the mathematical vocabulary that the Oak children have been using in their lessons and how well they are able to problem solve in collaboration with a partner. Thank you for your feedback on the new security gate, this adds an extra layer of security to the site and gives you as parents more flexibility at pick up times. Please see below for a full round up of this week’s activities across the site. This week Fledglings 1 have been collaging the three little pig houses with textured paint and shaped materials. In addition, we have been building structures out of different materials and singing along to the three little pigs story. The children have had fun playing with the small world farm animals and cardboard boxes.

Lots of fun this week in Fledglings 2 looking at the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, the children have enjoyed hunting for Golden eggs and matching beans to the correct numbered leaves. The children have also used cheerio's to stack onto Kebab sticks then stand them in play dough. We also painted big green leaves to make a giant Beanstalk.

This week in Top Robins we have been exploring different recycled packaging and using it for junk modelling. We have been down to the tennis courts to play on the climbing equipment and exploring the bikes and hula-hoops. We have also spent time playing in the sand pits and building sand structures. We have been using stencils to paint animal masks from the 'Highway Rat’ book as well as improving our fine motor skills by threading using string and pasta to create worms and bracelets.

On Monday, Oak enjoyed a Perform workshop around the theme of exploring the continent of Africa. Following on from this the children wrote some super sentences about African animals and created vehicles to transport them! The children were introduced to the word “estimation” when weighing different objects, having to estimate how many cubes they thought an object would weigh before using the scales. There was also lots of discussion when talking about finding half of packets of sweets and pizza leading on to the concepts of odd and even numbers.

This week Skylarks have been looking at patterns and blending three letter words, matching the words to the pictures. On Monday, the children were fully engaged during the African Explorer workshop and made wonderful tigers, elephants and alligators as they trekked through an imaginary jungle. We had our own car wash in the garden, this was the children's idea and they had a great system operating. Some children were using sponges to wash the cars and others rinsed! Mr Garlick and his helper were giving Peanut his daily run in the garden, throwing balls, which he dutifully retrieved. On Friday, the much-awaited Bird World trip took place and photos will follow in next week’s Nutshell.

More pictures to follow from a great day out next week!

News from Hazelwood

Thank you so much to Gary for coming over to make and to place the cross in our Peace Garden. This is fantastic and looks even better than I imagined. We would like to say a huge thank you to you all for helping us with this and will send you some photos as it is filled with the children’s pebbles. We have also officially received our Church Inspection report and can proudly say that we are ‘Outstanding!’ Your email the day before really set us up. Thank you. Best wishes Lenia Greenaway Headteacher, St Peter’s C of E Infant School, Tandridge Year 2 Swimming Gala 2018 On Wednesday 9th May, the Year 2’s gathered in their ability grouped teams on poolside, ready to compete in a variety of fun races for all abilities. Many parents, grandparents and family members came to cheer on their sons and daughters from the side of the pool, and the atmosphere was both competitive and fun! The Year 2 swimmers involved in early morning swimming training this term were able to demonstrate their speed in the relay event and got their first taste of a gala experience. Other swimmers challenged themselves to race in a variety of strokes, with the addition of both the ‘mushroom float’ competition and ‘sinker challenge’ events! Thank you to all the children whom swum – it was great fun!

Well Done Year 2! Miss Lloyd, Head of Swimming

Congratulations to James M who, on his inaugural outing for the prestigious Surrey Golf Junior Squad, contributed to a team away win against Hertfordshire and Hampshire. James has already been selected to play again in next month’s team match. Hazelwood girls strike gold! With the sun making a welcome appearance on Sunday afternoon, the OLCC Girls U9 team took the field in the Surrey Girls Festival in Reigate. With a team made up exclusively of Hazelwood girls (Martha C, Emelia and Grace H, Autumn L, Jessica L and Grace N), the girls were excited to get into competitive cricket for the first time in the season. Drawn in Group A, the team fought hard for a close win over Sutton & Epsom in their first game, the difference being some excellent out fielding by OLCC. This got confidence levels up, and some superb cricket in their second game- including catch of the tournament by Autumn- saw them to an easy win over Spencer, with some big hitting by power pair Grace N and Martha. All the bowlers delivered some very tight lines and good length with astonishingly few extras.

Dear Parents (Years 3-8)

New Field will be open for all sports fixtures parking from today and for the remainder of this term, unless otherwise advised. To alleviate congestion and help keep the main car park running as smoothly as possible, we would ask that all visitors attending fixtures please make use of this facility. For those of you who have not used New Field previously, it is located along Pollards Wood Hill and the entrance is sign posted with a blue Hazelwood sign. It is a busy road, so please enter and exit with extra caution. Kind regards Mr Mark Reay, Director of Sport

The final match was against a depleted but plucky Reigate Priory side, with the power hitting mantle being passed to Jessica and Grace H, very ably supported by the intelligent calling and running by Emelia and Autumn. A big final two overs saw the girls home comfortably in the end.

Last Friday, we were invited to the PGL Centre in Swindon to join a group of disabled young people and their friends for a fun-filled weekend of accessible activities. There were six disabled young people and we each brought a friend. It was an incredible weekend of fun, adventure and story swapping.

The OLCC girls topped Group A, winning the gold medal, but narrowly lost out on the overall trophy by just half a point. Congratulations to the team on a very fine performance: I think the cricket bug has bitten! Sarah Lowe Teacher of Girls' Games

We completed a high ropes course, kayaking, zip wire, orienteering, forest survival and much more. All of the 6 children with a limb impairment had either been born with their disability or acquired theirs like mine from Meningitis. We learned a lot about accepting difference, patience and grit that all of the young people had. Thank you to LimbPower, Steps & The Limbless Association for the opportunity. Leo S and Dom C

ESSA Swimming South East Division Primary Schools Relay Championships (next round) Report On Saturday 12th May, four Year 6 Hazelwood girls – Karlijn R, Clara B, Claudia G and Michelle M – travelled to the Guildford Spectrum Pool. This was to compete in the next round of the ESSA Primary Team Relay Championships for the South East Division, which they qualified for by placing in the top three in the previous round. The girls had already swum brilliantly to qualify for this competition in the Girls Open Freestyle Relay event (in a time of 1.07.94) and were very excited to be representing Surrey County and Hazelwood at such a high-level meet! They swum a fantastic heat and managed to drop their time by a further two seconds exactly (1.05.94), which meant they qualified in 8th place (out of a strong 16 SE schools) for the final that same evening. The girls had barely finished their heat before diving in for their final performance, and whilst their time was not quite as fast as their heat, they managed to achieve 7th place overall! Well done girls, what a fantastic result! In addition, thank you to all the parents who came to support them. Miss Lloyd, Head of Swimming RS create kaleidoscopes of colour in the woods On Wednesday, we went back to our woods to continue with our Forest School adventures. We were focusing on working collaboratively to look at the different colours around us. Using colour charts the children worked together to create pictures showing the range of shades in the woods. They could present their ideas how they wanted to and could use green, brown or yellow shades to build up their final piece of work.

Everyone had a great time and worked well together. Mr Walton

Interhouse Swimming is taking place next week for Years 3-8. Please can everyone make sure that they have the necessary swimming kit in school so that all can participate in what is always a keenly contested event. There have been too many occasions this half term when swimming kit has not been available as back up for weekly games lessons.

Year 5 Bikeability Having completed their first level in Bikeability last week, Year 5 are proud owners of badges and certificates announcing that they have developed their road cycling and safety skills. During the morning, they were set different challenges to test and improve their balance and control skills whilst riding. It was organised as part of our PSHEE curriculum looking at health and safety and children taking responsibility for their own safety, so at the end of the course we were very proud when the instructors announced that the children had successfully demonstrated an excellent command of all the skills. Great riding Year 5! Julia Johnston

\\ Year 3 look to make a change Year 3 have had a visit from Mrs Fayed today who talked about the eco-friendly products she has in her restaurant (bamboo cups, and compostable take away containers) and also the damage plastic is causing to the world. On the back of this, Martha C wrote the impassioned plea below.

Huge Congratulations to Camilla and Henry who both performed incredibly well at the Reigate Music Festival in their respective singing categories winning to applause and glowing feedback from the judges. Camilla out-sung fifteen others to win her category.

“I would like to be tell you about plastic and how we can stop using it. Maybe we can use fabric or other type of bags but not plastic. It would be incredible if we could stop using plastic. In the world there is 6.3.billion tons of it. That is a lot. The plastic is killing marine life and it is going to kill us. We are eating fish which has swallowed a lot of plastic and soon in the world there will be more plastic in the sea than fish and other sea creatures. We should not use plastic straws and use paper instead. When you sell flowers why don't you wrap newspaper around them instead of plastic because is made from trees. Instead of plastic cups we could use bamboo cups and jugs. Remember there is no 'away' when you throw away plastic bags.” Martha C

“Levez-vous des bras!” Monsieur Garlick and the children of Oak enjoy their french lesson outside en plein soleil this week.

Magic wands full of natural wonder! In this week’s Oak Nature Club, the children made magic wands in the wigloo from sticks and wool. Some children added leaves for extra pizazz! Many fine motor skills, winding wool around the sticks then securing the wool. The children concentrated and were proud of their creations.

Les Valeurs Britanniques At Hazelwood, we aim to develop a school ethos that promotes British values. The fundamental British values are: democracy the rule of law individual liberty mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. I am particularly proud of Year 7 who have reinforced this understanding by designing posters, explaining in French the fundamental British values. Some excellent translations as well beautifully creative notices; a superb cross-curricular exercise. J’adore! Madame le Floch

“I enjoyed this cross curricular work because some of the French words are so similar to English words. I think British values are really important and it is good we learn about them in French lessons too.” Henry A.

Athletics: Lessons learned and records broken!

Over the last 8 days, the Athletics squads have taken to the track for their first outings of the season. There were opportunities for older children to pick up where they left off last season and for some younger pupils to experience competition for the first time.

Last week the U8-11 teams took on a very strong Hilden Grange side. There were many fine performances but ultimately the team were well beaten and some tough lessons were learnt.

On Monday of this week, it was the turn of the U12 - 13 children as they travelled to Hawthorns to take on both the hosts and Danes Hill. Many of our Year 7 pupils were pitched against Year 8 opposition so it was always going to be a tough afternoon. Edward M, Natasha B and Francesca C set the ball rolling with strong performances in the hurdles. Felicity C, Jaden O'N, Felix M and Hannah R produced eye catching displays and Lucy L set the first school record of the year in the Shot Put. Felix and Felicity were deserved winners of the "Athletes of the Meet" award.

A mere 24 hours later the U9-11 squad were back on the track in our first home fixture against Hawthorns. There were many quite exceptional performances and huge improvements from 7 days earlier. No fewer than six (yes six!) school records were broken on the day. Congratulations to Annabelle N, Holly L, Freddie A, Luke D, Daniel A and Lydia O. Holly and Annabelle deserve particular mentions. Holly broken a 21 year long standing 800m school record and Annabelle not only set the Year 3 200m record but beat the Year 4 opposition in doing so.

The whole team should be commended for their performance and can be extremely proud of the team victory. Mark Reay, Director of Sport

The weekly music timetable can be viewed on the Music Notice Board outside the Dining room in the courtyard. I will endeavour to have the coming week’s music timetable on the notice board by the end of the school day each Friday. Please ensure that your child brings their instrument and music in on the relevant day. It is also important for them to take these books and instruments home when they do not need them in school.
