Artist Analysis. Title of photograph; Lighthouse. Name of the photographer; Robin Edwards. Genre of the photograph; Landscape. Date of the photograph; Unknown.

To start, I really like the composition of this photograph, for example I like the way the photographer has thought about what to have in this shot and how the lighthouse is the subject of the photograph but is also in the background and not staring right at you. Even though this is the case we still understand that the lighthouse is the subject. I also think one thing that you look at straight away in this shot is the grass. The position of the grass can also tell us what the weather would have been like in this shot (we can tell this by the way the grass has a swaying affect look). I think the reason why the photographer (Edwards) took this photograph is because first of it’s a landscape photograph and most photographers that shoot a landscape photo would normally photograph nature, or buildings. By saying this we can see that in this photograph there is a combination of nature (by the setting being outdoors) and buildings (lighthouse). Another worthy personal opinion I have of this photograph is the way there is a blend of colours in the sky. This photograph has been edited in black and white for starts but then we can tell that the sky has been well looked into and thought about. I really like the way there is some darker shades/areas in the sky, I think this gives the photograph a beneficial effect and again this could give the audience a sense of what the weather would have been like while shooting this photograph. An additional opinion I have of this photograph is how everything in this landscape shot is all in the same focus. There is not one subject in this that is blurred/more in focus than another subject. Although this could be a improvement for Robin Edwards next time to blur whatever is not the main focus in a shot to then leave the main subject of the photograph to the audiences attention.

Visually connected.

Evaluation of initial set of photographs When I went on the trip to Dungeness I first looked at what to take my photographs of and thought a lot about composition and what to have in my shots. This trip was a new experience to me so this is how these photographs fit in with the exam. I started shooting objects that caught my eye such as; the shacks, anchors, lighthouse and signs.

With the shacks I wanted to get a few shots from a couple of different angles to show the different sides of the shacks. When editing I also thought it would look good in black and white as the shacks were quite bleak themselves and didn’t have much colour, but also edited one of my shacks shots in colour to show the real colour of the shacks and to also have the bright blue colour of the sky in the background.

I took the sign and anchor shot as I really liked the way they were positioned in the setting and also how there were shadows coming off of these. Another reason I liked these shots was because I thought the snow gave a good affect on these photographs.

By doing my artist analysis on Robin Edwards (who took a lighthouse photograph) it inspired me to then take a photograph of a lighthouse also. I wanted to position my photograph differently to how the artist did. I also thought this photograph would be good to be edited in colour to show the bright colour of the sky and to get a sense of how it was to be in the setting. For example, I think a photograph can give the audience a sense of what the weather was like.

Evaluation of developmental set of photographs.

• When developing my photographs I wanted to do something that would make my photographs old so therefore used copydex. I wanted to do this as the location where I took my initial photographs had unusual buildings and shacks that looked timeworn therefore I thought if I used copydex I could make the photographs I took look old also. Similarly when using copydex you can scratch as much off to make it look as timeworn as you like. Overall I thought this was a good method of developing my photographs and I also thought they looked better than the original ones I took, so by doing this developmental set I think it improved the final outcome of my photographs.

Visually and Symbolically connected

To start I chose to analyse this photograph as it is visually and symbolically connected/related to my initial set of photographs that I will be taking. I like the composition of this photograph. Another reason is to why I find this photograph nice to look at is the fact that you can straight away tell the child's feet is the main subject in this photograph, also the main subject is in focus whereas the background is blurred as its not as important as the child’s feet in this photograph. Although the background is blurred I still think it is important as it shows the location of the photograph and gives the audience a story to this image. Also, this photograph is symbolically related to my initial photographs as it could be a symbol of showing a child's experience. For example this photograph could show the child’s first experience of going to the beach. I can also tell this as from the child’s feet he/she looks young (young children, toddlers, babies) This photograph also gave me more ideas for my initial set of photographs. Although in my photographs I think something that I would do differently is to get the main subject to be very bright and colourful, so this would stand out more. I would also blur the background in my photographs also like the photographer done in this photograph.

I really enjoyed taking these set of photographs as firstly I used my nephew and nieces childhood/upbringing, so therefore it was straight forward for me and I found it very interesting and also used props that I found exciting to photograph. I really delight in spending time with them and also found it different by photographing young children rather than friends or objects. It was a good experience for me and there were many different varieties of photographs to take from different locations to different props. To also make these photographs unique sometimes I would just photograph a specific part of the child's body rather than their face or whole body. I also found that some photographs looked good in black and white whereas others looked better with more brightness and contrast.

Explanation.

In my 8hours during my exam I expect to edit most of the time and then print these edited photographs to then stick onto my wooden cubes that have been made for me, as I have planned my final outcome to be a few wooden 3D cubes/boxes with my photographs on these to make it link into my project of childhood memories, therefore the cubes come from the toy building blocks.

Full project evaluation.

When it came to choosing what to do for my exam project I had an idea that I wanted to do it with young children, preferably my niece and nephew. I wanted to do this as it was different from what I had done in previous projects and I thought I would find this interesting and exciting. Also where it was new experiences and meetings it then gave me an idea to use props and different locations that my niece and nephew experience and new meetings that they encounter as they are growing up. When I had all the ideas I found it easy to get on and do it. I really enjoyed this project and definitely made the right decision into doing it with young children although sometimes it could have been a struggle as they are young and not always easy to work with while photographing them. I also had a variation of ideas in whether to photograph objects owned by my niece/nephew or them themselves so therefore mixed these ideas up and did a variety of props, them themselves and them with props.
