GOOD NEWS

Numbers ze:4Q I Philippians z:6-er IJohn 3:e3-r7

Julian of Norwich (born in :342, died after 1416), who wrote so wonderfullyabout hervisions of God, once said that we have our beginning in God's love. From that love we are created, and in that love we live until we are unitedwith God at the end.

l've always loved the image of a love that wants to bear fruit in creation-that wants to create me and all the people of the world. Why should it be anysurprise, then, that in his love, God would give us himself in Jesus Christ toredeem us all and give us eternal life? lt shouldnt yet many of us walkaround unable to believe that someone might love us enough to give his lifefor us.

Today is an invitation to stop and ask, "What if I believed wholeheartedly thewords of the gospel today? What if I knew to the core of my being that I was

loved?" I think we might carry ourselves a little differently; we mightapproach people more openly; we might dare even to love those we thoughtwe couldn't. We get occasional glimpses of love: husbands and wives, parents and children, the deep love of a friend who will drop everything tohelp us. God's love is all of that and more. For our sake, God emptied himselfto become one of us and, at the last, he gave himself for us that we mightlive more fully than we ever thought possible.

Let us know and believe God's love, which created us, redeemed us, andholds us still untilthat great day we are united with him forever in heaven.

FELLOWSHIP-SI. Andrew Kim Taegon September 2Oth

The Church honors those who have been martyred for the faith. There are

those even today who suffer for Christ. We remember and teach our children

how precious our faith in Jesus us by celebrating their feast days. After the

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

September zest is set aside by the U.S. Bishops as the day we commission and

remember to pray for our Catechists, students and families. Catechesis comes

from the Latin and Greek to teach by word of mouth, it has it's origins in the

word echo. To catechize is to pass on what we have learned. That's why we

can't do it just by the internet or video, but person to person. Please pray forourteachers and students as they begin a newyear.

de ar PAD Rf,

A Prdestant frifld tdls me that Jesls died to take the puni$rmort ftrcur sins That dwr't sm aaurate to me Is that what fte Churdtteadrc*

Jesus understood his mission to be sacrificing his own life"as a ransom for many''(Matthew 20:28). His fidelity to thatmission was even at the cost of death. However, saymg Jesus'

death was payment for our sins doesn't mean that a vengefulGod was appeased by the slaughter of his own innocent son.

Rather, we are redeemed because of the mutual love betweenFather and Son, as well as the love Christ had for us all whenhe offered his life."It is love 'to the end'[see John 13:l] that confers on Christ'ssacrifice its value as redemption and reparation, as atonement

and satisfaction" (CatedrisnoftheCaftdicchurdL 616). It is inthis sense that Jesus' death was a payment-not one to be

exacted-but a unique sacrifice 'that completes and surpasses

all other sacrifices," when 'the Father handed his Son over tosinners in order to reconcile us with himself," and the Son ofGod freely and lovingly offered his human life to his Father

"in repmation for our disobedience" (CCC 614).Christ obore our sins in his body upon the cross....By hiswounds you have been healed" (1 Peter 2:24). Viewed in lightof the resurrection, Christ's death has meaning in eternallife's triumph over sin.
