thIt is my pleasure to invite you to Prague – venue of the 6 International Symposium on Childhood MDS and Bone Marrow Failure syndromes. Previous symposia organized between 1996 and 2009 in Titisee, Funen, Stresa, Freiburg and Rotterdam reflected enormous progress achieved during the last 20 years in the understanding of childhood MDS and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. Uniform attitude to the diagnosis and therapy based on common database practised by EWOG-MDS from the half of 1990s increased our knowledge of the epidemiology and biology of these rare disorders. Progress in diagnostics enabled better differentiation of MDS from congenital and acquired bone marrow failures and AML. These achievements were included into WHO classification 2008. Remarkable improvement of prognosis has been achieved by early indication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation using uniform conditioning regimen and GVHD prophylaxis. Another important step in European collaboration was recent establishement of the EWOG-SAA group. I have no doubts that symposium in Prague will show further progress in research and clinical practice achieved since the last symposium in Rotterdam 2009.

Come to Prague and enjoy both scientific meeting and beauties of the historical capital of the Czech Republic!

Looking forward to your visit

Jan Starýon behalf of the Local Organizing Committee

WELCOME MESSAGE BY EWOG-MDS CHAIR

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past years, the clinical and molecular insight in the contuining spectrum of pediatric bone marrow failure, myelodysplastic syndromes as well as juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia has improved considerably. Within EWOG, such progress was accelerated by international registration and collaboration on a Eurpean level, which set the scene for further global collaboration.

We are proud to present this interesting symposium, to be hosted by Prof. Dr. Starý and collegues in Prague and hope that it will further contribute to the distribution of the knowledge of these rare hematological diseases in children, ultimately leading to more effective treatment strategies and subsequent enhanced (quality of) survival.
