Handel’s MessiahEnglish Chamber Orchestra

Ruby Hughes soprano Robin Blaze countertenor Nicholas Mulroy tenor Ben McAteer bass Simon Wright conductor Winchester Consort English Chamber Orchestra

When King George II first heard Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, it is said that he jumped to his feet with excitement. But if Hallelujah! is all you know of Handel’s Messiah, you’re in for a glorious surprise because every note is just as inspired.

Not so much an oratorio, more a national institution; this is simply some of the most uplifting music ever written and the ECO’s Advent Sunday performances at Cadogan Hall have become something of a seasonal tradition.

With Simon Wright conducting hand-picked singers of the Winchester Consort, we celebrate all the melody and majesty of this timeless classic.

Bell features as soloist in Bach’s spirited Violin Concerto in A minor before directing his virtuosic Third Brandenburg Concerto from the leader’s chair.

Mahler’s sumptuous string orchestra arrangement of Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor, ‘Death and the Maiden’, and Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires complete the programme. Adapted by composer and Piazzolla aficionado Leonid Desyatnikov in the 1990s, Four Seasons of Buenos Aires brilliantly fuses Piazzolla’s music with Vivaldi’s original Four Seasons and is undoubtedly one of the most popular violin works of modern times.

George Li piano Oliver Zeffman conductor

‘After hearing my Third Symphony Rimsky-Korsakov shook his head and said: “Why don’t you do it the usual way?”… And now I am certain that my symphonies are played more than his.’

So wrote Sibelius is 1940, 33 years after his Third Symphony premiered to a bemused audience hungry for more over the top Romanticism. Now we know it for what it is – the first ‘Sibelian’ symphony, with the subtlety and melodic development that became his trademark.

It’s paired here with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, a remarkable piece which contemporary audiences were barely given the chance to hear, as he claimed to keep it as one of the ‘compositions which I keep for myself or for a small circle of music-lovers and connoisseurs.’

A combination of instruments barely explored since the great Swiss collaboration of Heinz Holliger and Aurèle Nicolet in the early 1980s, the ECO and star soloists Ana de la Vega (flute) and Ramón Ortega Quero (oboe) bring to life some of Haydn’s very late works – commissions by King Ferdinand of Naples, and forgotten gems by Karl Stamitz which have remained in manuscript for over 300 years. Full of life, genius and operatic charm, these works uncover the mystic love affair between the flute and oboe – a relationship intrinsic, almost cornerstone, to the symphonic repertoire, now bought to the fore.

The return of the show that has sold out Cadogan Hall on all four previous occasions.

Bandleader and clarinettist Pete Long (Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, Echoes of Ellington and sax star of Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra) presents a superlative recreation of one of the greatest concerts in jazz history.

The 16 musicians of the Goodmen will recreate Benny Goodman’s famous Carnegie Hall concert which featured swing stars such as trumpeter Harry James and drummer Gene Krupa. It was also the first time that black and white jazz musicians appeared together on the concert stage in the USA with Lionel Hampton on vibes, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Duke Ellington and Count Basie band members making guest appearances. An exciting cast of soloists joins the London Mozart Players and the City of London Choir for a vivid interpretation of Elijah: the biblical epic brought to life by Mendelssohn’s beautiful and powerful score.

The story of the great prophet – an important figure in Judaism, Christianity and Islam – is full of drama: false gods, famine and flood; ravens and resurrection; earthquake, wind and fire. The oratorio was immediately taken to the hearts of the British audience for whom it was written, thanks to its strong characters and narrative, rich orchestral colour and stirring choruses, and has remained one of the most loved choral works to this day.

English Chamber OrchestraLeia Zhu plays Mendelssohn

Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream OvertureMendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minorDvořák Romance for Violin and OrchestraSchubert Symphony No. 3

Leia Zhu violinJoseph Wolfe conductor

Music, like nature, occasionally produces something that looks much like a miracle. In the 19th century, it was the teenage prodigy Felix Mendelssohn. In 2019, it’s the 13-year old violin virtuoso Leia Zhu, who’s astonished audiences and critics across Europe, and tonight makes her British concerto debut in Mendelssohn’s hugely popular Violin Concerto.

‘It is fun,’ she says. ‘That’s also the beauty of making music. Each time, it is different.’

Fresh, brilliant and utterly life-affirming, her performance will be the heart of a whole evening of music specially chosen to prove that where genius is concerned, youth is a state of mind.

Biber Battalia à 10Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5Warlock Capriol SuiteHaydn Symphony No. 44, ‘Trauer’

Benjamin Beilman violin/director

If you like your orchestral music with a little flair and lots of drama, look no further. Mozart’s virtuosic violin concert sits side by side with Haydn’s Trauer or Mourning symphony – a piece so achingly brilliant the composer himself requested that it was played at his funeral.

Two slightly more unusual pieces – baroque composer Biber’s Battalia à 10 and the 20th-century Capriol Suite – provide a collection of sparkling dance rhythms, from European folk to the Renaissance court.

Glinka A Life for the Tsar OvertureBrahms Double ConcertoTchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Duncan Riddell violinRichard Harwood celloDomingo Hindoyan conductor

Few works could be described as a cornerstone of Russian music better than Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The use of the recurring Fate theme as an emotional core paints new orchestral colours in each movement with intensity and purpose. Its frequent use hints also at a deep anxiety plaguing the composer, underlying even when the sullen final movement is broken by a triumphant conclusion. Despite the composer’s doubts, it is rightfully celebrated as one of the great Romantic symphonies.

Brahms’ Double Concerto written for violin, cello and orchestra makes for an exquisite first half with RPO Leader Duncan Riddell and Principal Cello Richard Harwood. A masterpiece of virtuosic writing and instrumentation, Brahms’ last orchestral work set new boundaries for the possibilities of the concerto form.

Wagner Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und IsoldeLiszt Piano Concerto No. 2Hans von Bülow NirwanaBrahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn

Mariam Batsashvili pianoAlexander Shelley conductor

Wagner’s incomparable opera Tristan und Isolde features in the second concert of Alexander Shelley’s 360° series, exploring musical influences and relationships that inspired great composers. The profoundly meditative Prelude opens the opera with lush orchestration, expressive harmonies and chromaticism that divided those who heard it in its day, irrevocably influencing the course of Western music in the 19th century.

Bülow and Liszt were both contemporaries and supporters of Wagner, whose personal relationships are well documented through Wagner’s scandalous affair with Liszt’s daughter – Bülow’s wife. Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Bülow’s Nirwana exhibit a Wagnerian fanaticism, but countering this is Brahms, whose stalwart conservative voice of the era is heard in the classically influenced Variations on a Theme by Haydn.
