What have you learned from your

audience feedback? By Imogen and Annabelle.

Page 2: Evaluation Q3

QuestionnaireFirstly, we created a questionnaire that we handed out to our target audience. This was in order to find out their opinion of our music video, poster and digipak. We aimed to gain our target audiences view because its very important in analysing if we have been successful as they are the consumers that would eventually be purchasingour products.

This is a copy of the actual questionnaire that we handed out to our target audience. We printed and handed out 30 copies.

1. What music genre would you class this video as?

We used this question to establish how well we had used the genre conventions in establishing a video that clearly fitted into the ‘indietronica’ style. The more answers that were close to the genre we aimed for, the more successful we were. We did however know that the term ‘indietronica’ was little known by audiences who instead referred to the this type of music in wider sense as indie rock or electronic. We accepted these phrases as a correct answer. Some of the responses are listed on the left hand side:

Indietronica

Indie RockRock

Pop

Indie Electronic

2. Did you follow the narrative (story) of the music video?

We wanted to know how cohesive the storyline was and if our audience understood what was happening. If they did not understand this, we had clearly not edited our footage effectively. Also, in our initial research conducted before we planned our video the feedback stated that our audience liked a narrative video so that it gave them something to follow and remember. This is why we chose to add a narrative and is also why it’s crucial that they did follow. We were really pleased that 97% of our audience agreed that they did follow the narrative as it shows that we achieved our target.

3. Would you watch this music video again?

This question is a subtle way of seeing how popular our video had been. If audiences would not watch it again, they would probably not share it with their friends and therefore the music videos success would be limited. Both social media and sharing are a vital part of a videos popularity in todays market alongside word-of-mouth marketing. For these reasons we were very pleased that all of our target audience asked said that they would repeat our video and watch it again.

4. Did you think the miming in our music video looked

genuine? This is a very important factor in a music video as the band are supposed to appear as if they are genuinely performing. If there is any doubt about this to an audience it makes the band appear as frauds who do not have real talent or control over their instruments. In particular, the ‘Indietronica’ genre focuses hugely on performance and mastery of musical instruments as a point of pride so this was especially important for our video. By testing how well the miming was in our video, we are also testing how realistic and professional the performance appears.

5. What genre characteristics out of the following stood out to you

the most?We wanted to establish which characteristic was most prominent in the video and stood out to audiences to see what we had done the best. We found that costume was considered our strongest point with 14 (almost half) of the audience choosing this. This showed that, as we predicted, fashion is a huge element of the genre. We took time before filming planning the right costumes for each character/band member to try and portray this genre characteristic really authentically. The second most popular answer was location which we had also previously discussed as a very important genre convention we wanted to maintain in our products. Nature is often a big part of the indietronica style and we tried to incorporate this as much as possible whilst overcoming the problems that arise often when filming outdoors. Performance also scored highly which we expected as it is stereotypical to see a performance element in not only our sub-genres music video, but also in the wider rock/indie rock genres. Narrative and Editing scored the least but were still considered important to us when researching, planning and filming.

6. Would you say all 3 of our products are professional and

saleable?

YesNo

This is obviously an important question as the main aim of the music industry is to make money. If our products are not saleable then they have no purpose in the industry. We focused on producing products that looked as professional as possible, meaning something that would actually be seen on the TV, in a shop or shared on social media. The more positive responses we got to this question, the more realistic our target audience viewed our products in comparison to real media products already on the market. For this reason, we were happy that only one person answered ‘no’.

7. Would this poster interest you to use the QR scanner?

For this question we were pleased that 24 people answered yes that they would take advantage of the new media in the form of a QR scanner. I think this is strongly due to the fact that our target audience is aged around 16-25 therefore they often are interested and engaged to new, current technologies and inventions. The 6 candidates that answered no shows that not everyone is inclined to new medias, this could be due to the fact they don’t have QR scanners to hand or due to the fact that they don’t want to use it or don’t know how to use it. For the QR barcode, a QR scanner is needed which can be downloaded onto most phones but some of our target audience may not have this suitable technology hence the candidates who answered ‘no’.

8. Can you see a consistent brand image and theme throughout our 3

products?Creating a brand image between all of our products was something that we both were very conscious about doing. We aimed to do this through our font choice, colour schemes, location and logo. The reason that we really wanted our brand image to be consistent was to attract our target audience making it easier for them to recognise all of our products and make them all stand out together. We kept the theme of nature throughout and took our still images all in the same location for our ancillary tasks and our music video to help to create this brand image. The 100% of positive responses to this question was great as it meant that our products all linked together with the same themes and our target audience noticed this.
