Conventions

• In the end our promo went pretty well. We had issues with our scripts and

storyboards, however in the end our planning turned out pretty well. We took

good influence from other soap operas and I feel used some editing techniques

and camera angles which were similar to that of existing soap products and

advertisements. For example our use of close ups to emphasise the emotion of a

character is used in existing media products.• In some ways however we have gone against usual soap conventions. For example

soaps tend to follow the stereotypes of people whereas we tried to go against

some stereotypes. For example by having our homo sexual relationship being

displayed as normal by having them dressed in normal and quite heterosexual

clothes, goes against the stereotypes as we felt it was not realistic.

As you can see from our piece compared to a

‘Passions’ (July 2007) promo we have used

similar over dramatic facial expressions and

held shots to over emphasize the emotion.

Our use of titles also was not dissimilar

to that of some existing products we

used a deep red colour with a light to

create a sense of class and glamour .In our titles once again we have taken

influence from existing products and

created that fast and dramatic feel to

our promo and just by a few words it

gives the audience the idea of the

storyline.

• As a group we noticed that there was many advertising and production

company’s logos usually put all over promo’s so we decided to make out own

logo.

• The comparison is from an extract of ‘one tree hill’ (2003) (left) we used this

as we felt that it gave our promo a more realistic aspect and hopefully didn’t

make it look to amateur.

• For our sound we used tense dramatic music that was consistent throughoutas a climax to the music we had an abrupt bang. Which was the sound of a

prison door being shut, this was we felt reflective of the relationship between

the two men and how they are effectively prisoners to their own relationship.

• For our target audience was aimed more at a mature audience as we based our

characters around this sort of age range. As you can see from this example the

target audience for Hollyoaks (1995) is aimed at a more a younger target audience

as the characters are younger and teenagers. Opposite to this would be Desperate

Housewives (2004) whose protagonists are middle aged women thereforeattracting mostly that audience.

Our choice of location was quite well thought out after we

eventually got to our storyline and as a result of this I felt

benefited our overall product. The use of a shop and carsomething so ordinary is what is used in many other soap

programmes and therefore creating that sense of realism we

were trying to achieve.

This image is from a set in ‘Coronation Street’ (1960)and from

this ordinary look to the set again creates that sense of realism

and something that audience can really relate to. We again took

on this idea in our piece.

How effective is our ancillary tasks and main task in promoting

our product

• Poster

• In relation to our other media products I believe our main task works well. We have used consistent

colours and themes which are similar throughout. We have used the colours black and red which we felt

was really symbolic of the storyline. We felt it reflected something very dramatic and tense, but at the

same time we felt it was representative of the relationship between Klaus and Horatio.

• I think it creates a sense of drama and I feel the poster has strong aspects of our main task. I think our

poster was well rounded and gave a distinct and unique look as well as having a relation to our poster we

used screen grabs in our poster in order to reveal a small aspect of our storyline in the episode.

Page 8: Evaluation MEDIA NEW

• The font as you can see is relatable in ‘Walthambury Road ‘and ‘The

secret’s finally out’  but we have used different colour in order to make

sure that the audience can differentiate a little between the theme of the

promo

• We have used our logo in both our poster and our promo, this was

representative of advertising logo’s which are put over soap

advertisements and we felt looked professional and similar to existing

soap products.

• Magazine cover

• We had taken lots of inspiration from other existing products for our magazine cover our over

the top bold yellow title had come from us researching into other existing products

• Also the use of questions within the magazine creates an aspect for the audience to want to

find out the answer to the question in the following episode of the soap.• We also used a central tagline which is similar in existing products for example are tagline is

‘the secret’s OUT!’ where as Soaplife magazines tagline is ‘Summer SHOCKS’  the use of

capital letters to emphasise and highlight parts of the sentence really we felt draw the

audience in.

New Media and existing products

• It is evident throughout our task that we have taken heavy influence form otherexisting product. When researching into different existing products it spurredmany ideas that became influential to our poster magazine and promo. Whenlooking at other promos we noticed that in more recent years there has been amuch heavier sense of drama presented when advertising a soap this gave us theidea to use tense music throughout our promo. This also gave us the initial idea of scripting our promo as a section of an episode and taking snippets from it to

create our promo as this is apparent in most soap advertising promos.• Research

• Our vast amount of research into soap products gave us very much a clear idea of a reoccurring conventions within the soap genre. As a result of this we noticedthat we could put these conventions into our product. Our analysis of existing soappromos also really gave us an extra idea as to what soaps used in their promos. Ianalysed two American soap promos ‘Passions’ (1999) and ‘The Young And TheRestless’ (1973) both of these soaps with somewhat unorthodox storylines someof the time, they did still however have a consistent theme editing wise to theirpromos and we took a lot of influence from these soaps. To analyse these productswe used YouTube and embedded this on our wiki’s, it was very simple to do andhelped the aesthetics of our Wiki’s.

• Production

• When actually making our film we used Sony hand held cameras we used twocameras as we felt in post production this would be more beneficial as it gave usmore than one perspective on our filming. We used locations which were very

local and quite normal as we wanted to portray something that was very real, andwe found that a lot of existing soaps use these locations also. Our editingprogramme Adobe premier was in some ways beneficial and in other ways wasquite difficult to use. It was beneficial in the sense that it was very simple tocreate a title in between transitions and this gave our production a real ‘soapopera’  feel.

• It was however difficult in the sense that just simply to cut sound or film

became quite complicated. It did also sometimes shut off unexpectedly

therefore we would sometimes loose our work.

When uploading different pages on to my blog I initially PDF’dthem and then used Scribd to embed them onto our blog. This

was a very simple and easy way to upload things and I feel it

really benefitted our blog . When embedding our film on to

our blog we used YouTube this not only makes the embeddinga lot easier but also gives us a general public feedback from

the video.

Evaluation

When doing my evaluation I initially decided to do it on Word

however once re read it I decided that on PowerPoint it seem

to be more aesthetically pleasing and gave my evaluation a bit

more of a professional look. I print screened a lot of myimages on to my evaluation I feel this benefited us in the

sense that we were able to really show what we had done in a

more exiting form. T

Audience feedback

• I asked several different viewers from around my school, I decided not to

use my family as it could be seen as bias and wouldn't give me an honest

audience feedback.

• This tells me after getting feedback that perhaps it would have better to

spend a little more time on our magazine cover and poster, as in

comparison to the rest of our feedback slightly less people would have

wanted to see our soap because of our ancillary tasks.

• From this information I gathered that we did an ok job with our actors. We

had only use of one experienced actor however I think what we put out

was watchable. We selected our actors with good intention however this

does tell us that there is room for improvement in our cast selection. If I

was to cast again I would have asked the drama department at out school

to borrow some actors/actresses.

After gathering this information it is clear that our soap promo

was effective in selling our product and more effective than

our ancillary tasks. I feel this is because we have used

traditional soap conventions within our promo and spent

more time and care on our promo. I think where our ancillarytasks was lacking was in production values.

From this information it is clear our promo was well received.

And from the audience we asked overall went well. The

promo in the end I am pleased with because I feel it achieves

in displaying soap opera conventions however at the same

time allowing the group to express creativity. If given the timeI would have done a large survey to get larger feedback.

• Overall our task went well. We had a few issues with

things such as the script not suiting our availability

and also perhaps our planning could have been a lot

better. We did however produce I feel a convincingand well rounded promo. Along with this we made a

decent poster and magazine cover. If I was to do this

task again I would definitely plan a lot better, as this

gives you more time to edit and the editing process iscrucial when advertising a media product.
