The Directive on Open Data and the Re-use of Public Sector Information

and High Value Datasets

On the morning of 25 May 2018, all public sector bodies, businesses and organisations across the European Union had to change their ways in managing their customers and staff personal information. Beyond compliance, that triggered a generational cultural change in how our clients understand, use and process personal data.

On the morning of 17 July 2021, a new wave will impact public sector bodies and their suppliers of services. This is the time to start preparing for impact, and making it into an opportunity.


By 17 July 2021 the “Directive (EU) 2019/1024 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 on open data and the re-use of public sector information” (or “Open Data Directive”) must be implemented by all EU Member States.

Among the other obligations, the OD Directive defines the concept of “high-value datasets” (HVDs) and requires public sector bodies and public undertakings to make this data available for re-use to the public, free of charge.

Since its inception in 2015 the European Data Portal is the EU’s largest project to support the Member States publishing more and better open data, including what will now be called HVDs.

THE EUROPEAN DATA PORTAL IS ON THE FRONTLINE OF SUPPORTING ADOPTION


In 2019, the EU also started a sister-project, too: the Support Centre for Data Sharing, extending the scope from open data to every data sharing model, for public sector but also private.
