Nimble fingers or cognitive transfer performance? Keyboard or pen and

writing pad? In the case of the latter two, handwritten notes promote an

understanding of complex contexts. This is what the US psychologist

Pam Mueller (Princeton University), together with her colleague Daniel

Oppenheimer (University of California), have experimentally proven

(“The Pen is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over

Laptop Note Taking”. In: Psychological Science). They showed 15-

minute video presentations to 67 students and

noticed that the test persons who were equipped

with a pen and notepad were able to reproduce

complex relationships better. They did not simply

make notes word for word, but wrote down the

essential information in their own words.

3 factsabout PET

The plastic material polyethylene terephthalate, or PET for short,

celebrated its 75th birthday in 2016. Originally developed as an

alternative to the production of textile fibres, the material is now

one of the most important in the packaging and textile industry.1

A good 16 million tonnes of PET bottles are put into circulation

worldwide.2. A total of 477,000 tonnes of PET bottles were filled

in Germany in 2015.3

A study4 found that in 2015 just under 93.5 per cent of all PET

bottles were recycled. The rate for disposable PET bottles was

even higher at 97.9 per cent.

How does a PET bottle become a sustainable promotional product?

To make the uma rPET PEN, old PET bottles

are collected, washed and crushed to a uni-

form size. These small granules called pel-

lets are then heated and melted. The materi-

al is re-shaped, creating a new product.

In the ranking list of Trends 2017, “urban gardening” is at the very top. In fact, more and more people are finding pleasure when gardening in the city. What is readily con-

sidered to be a hype, howev-er, is by no means a hip idea of the 21st century, but rath-er a return to an old form of

self-sufficiency.

“Urban gardening” may sometimes be spatially limited, but certainly not in terms of fantasy. There is always enough space for a walnut-sized ball of earth, clay and various seeds to enjoy flora. Certainly with the right garden tools set. In addition, garde-ning can also be sweetened in other ways.

What previous generations

already knew ...

If you look back in the history books more than two centuries ago,

you will fi nd examples of gardening in cities. This was due not

least to a lack of transport. Carts and horse carriages alone were

not suffi cient to supply the ever-growing urban population with

food from afar. In Paris at the end of the 19th century, 8,500

self-employed gardeners cultivated approximately 1,400 hectares

in the gardens of Le Marais, one sixth of the city’s area. Their

annual yield: 100,000 tons of food (fruit and vegetables) for the

then 1.1 million inhabitants of the Seine metropolis. (cf. www.welt.

de: “How urban gardening helps in underprivileged districts”).

Good quality, poor quality: surely no one can claim to have never made this assessment. Everyone talks about quality and has an opinion on it. But what does quality actually mean? We decided to get to the bottom of this question by taking an in-depth look at promotional textiles.
