Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The readings for today present a theme of

restoration and reward for faithfulness. Jeremiah the prophet presents a message from God that announces a restoration or return to Jerusalem from exile in the northern area and he further declares that he is God’ emissary. The accompany in the gospel from Mark narrates an instance where Jesus restores the sight of a beggar named Bartimaeus who is the first human to recognize (apart from Peter) the true identify of Jesus. “Son of David” title points to Jesus as the heir of God’ promises made to David through the prophet Nathan.

Similar to the nation of Israel’s coming to a semblance of normalcy, the blind man likewise comes to normalcy through the miracle preformed by Jesus. It is unusual for Mark to name the person that Jesus has healed.

In the process of coming to Jesus, Bartimeaus calls out to Him. This true identity has cause for the disciple to allow the man to come to Him, for He sees no displeasure behind the man’s acclamation but may have peaked Jesus’ curiosity to have heard his call.

The remark “He though aside his cloak” may be seen as a symbolic assertion for the cloak is usually spread out in front of him to collect alms. Then the meaning here is the anticipation of the man’ faith that Jesus will cure him and the cloak is no longer needed. This is the best suggestion that he is putting aside his old life to put on a new garment which may refer to baptismal imagery. Bertimaeus’ humility is in contrast to James’ and John’s request to placed in a position of honor at a banquet. All of this point to his spiritual healing that will accompany his coming physical healing as evidenced by his recognition of who Jesus is. This blind man has seen the true nature of Jesus’ divine and regal authority. His action humbles Jesus to provide him a service.

Faith in Jesus is a pre-requisite for His action and an acknowledge of a response of acceptance to His teaching. In Jesus’ earthly ministry faith means that Jesus’ power of words to heal others is coming from God.

The final verses of this Markian passage asserts that the blind man now is a whole person possessing spirituality and physicality to accompany Jesus to experience Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. The man’s faith has given him a path or way to eternal life through Jesus.

The two readings from Scripture reveal that faith in the Father through adherence to His covenant in the Old Testament and through the adding to that covenant by His Son in the New Testament shall reap the rewards of God’s will for mankind.

MASS ATTENDANCE for October 16-17 was: 5:00 PM (62), 9:00 am (73), and 11:00 am (89) for a total of 224. This

was somewhat inflated by the extra people who were at the 11 am Mass for the CDA anniversary dinner that followed,

and is 72% of the pre-pandemic attendance (310). May we encourage one another in getting back to Mass even as we

take precautions against the COVID virus.

LITANY TO ST. JOSEPH will be prayed immediately after the 8:00 am Mass each Wednesday during this Holy Year in honor of St. Joseph. THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION (RCIA) is the process by which persons interested in learning about the Catholic faith can become fully initiated into the Church. Sessions are held each week on Sunday, 12 Noon to 1:15 PM. We are most grateful to the Lord for sending us four inquirers. Please pray for them and for our RCIA leaders. USE YOUR PA TAXES TO SUPPORT CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION through the Pennsylvania Educa-tional Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program. Call Christ the Divine Teacher School the School Office (724-539-3558) for more information. PLEASE REMEMBER ST. FLORIAN IN YOUR WILL. A bequest to our par ish endowment fund will be a gift that supports St. Florian’s in perpetuity. Please consider bequeathing 5% of your residual liquid assets to our parish or cemeteries. Thank you so much! HAVE YOU EVER TOLD SOMEONE: “You would make a good priest or sister”? Be aware that the Lord is ever

calling men and women to serve His Church in religious vocations. Those called may dismiss the stirring in their heart or

the quiet inner voice of Jesus reaching out to them unless we affirm its authenticity with our honest inquiry. That means

all of us should be “vocation-minded”. Watch for more on this!!

Read Fr. John’s Homily at www.saintflorian.org under the “Parish Life” tab.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is reparation for the sins of others (and self) that so pleases Our Lord. Consider these words Our Lord communicated via locution to a certain Benedictine monk: “Only men can make reparation for men…Only a human heart can make reparation for a human heart. What I look for from men…My angels cannot give me….Offer Me reparation by offering Me yourself….” (In Sinu Jesu p. 210-211.) For October 12-13, the following hours had only one adorer: 9 am, 11 am, 4 PM, 5 PM, 9 PM, 1 am, and 2 am. Thank you.

CHURCH IS OPEN 24/7 for silent adoration of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle. Everyone

is encouraged to stop in each day if possible at a convenient time, and to sign our log-in time sheet so that we can gauge

participation in this. Please help us toward perpetual adoration. These are unprecedented times invite our full turning to

the Lord. Thank you for your response!
