Catholic Charities offers virtual counseling
Social distancing can take a toll. So can waiting in line to get into
a grocery or hardware store. It’s not unusual to feel angry, or
frustrated, or confused. For some people, the pandemic re-
strictions can magnify feelings of anxiety, depression, interper-
sonal conflict, grief and a wide variety of other issues. Catholic
Charities provides virtual counseling to help address those issues
and more. Taking care of your own emotional well-being is very
important to you and the people you love. You don’t need to
face these feelings alone. Call Catholic Charities at 724-837-1840
or email [email protected].

The Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time
The opening passage for today speaks of the dangers incurred by those sent to proclaim the word of God. Jeremiah has accepted the prophetic life that God has proposed. More than any other prophet, he preaches his messages and lives them too. His religious lifestyle brings hatred and persecution especially from those who do not support the Babylonian incursion. This Old Testament section matches Jesus’ warning to the 12 of the dangers they may meet on their preaching mission for some will accept their message while others may reject it. In Old Testament times prophets faced dangers of death if the hearers did like the message that was delivered even if they knew it was sent by God. In today’s Old Testament passage Jeremiah bemoans his fate as God’s prophet. He has been castigated, rebuffed, even flogged and set in the stocks as a rejection of his divine messages. After his lament here, Jeremiah changes to praise Yahweh. He shows confidence in Yahweh’s promise that his adversaries will be put to shame. His confidence has its base in Yahweh’s “do not be afraid. I am with you always” (1:8, 19) which he often recalls in defense of the strong feeling of danger he may sense or has felt in proclaiming a prophecy. He holds to his faith in Yahweh’s loyalty. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus is in the first year of His public ministry. He has gathered the 12 to commission and instruct them as He is about to send them on their first preaching mission. The ministry of preaching can be frightening as already stated by Jeremiah. Faith alone in God’s protection will ease that fear. Jesus gives the same warning against fear as did His Father to Jeremiah. (Gehenna is a term that Jesus uses for a place of eternal destruction. It is a valley that runs along the southern edge of Jerusalem during the time of Jesus. In a sense it is a place of great stench, smoke and fire. Jesus, in verses 29-30, uses a rabbinic argumental method that compares a light matter like the worth of a spar-row to the worth of a human in God’s eyes for God appears protective of all creation. Jesus inserts this comparison into His instruction to diminish the fear of the 12 and to encourage them to trust God’s divine care. With the assurance that God knows and cares what happens to them, the 12 express that “Jesus is the Messiah and Lord”. This true confession of His identity, Jesus will accept and disown any who deny it. These will get no support from Jesus in their judgment before the Father. The process of gaining or having support from God in
evangelistic matters is a constant. In both the Old land the New Testaments God supports those who do the mission given
to them by Him. Both passages attest to His constancy. God will not allow anything to stop, hinder, reject His message
from being heard. Even in rejection and punishment to the messenger, it will be delivered.

PARISH and PERSONAL UPDATE
Mass attendance was noticeably up from last week, but was still less than our reduced seating capacity (80-100). Ushers will take a count this weekend in order to get an accurate measure. Eucharistic Adoration resumed on Tuesday into Wednesday with all twenty-four hours covered by at least one adorer. Thank you and thanks be to God! Everyone is reminded that “DO NOT USE” pews are off-limits even outside of Mass during private prayer or adoration, not only to facilitate safe distancing but also to reduce the work load for the daily cleaning of pews. In other words, these pews do not get washed each day like the ones marked “ENTER”. On a personal note, last week I started transitioning from a walker to a cane, even though I still use the wheelchair for most Masses to help prevent leg over-use, swelling, inflam-mation and pain. So far I’ve had four sessions of physical therapy and next week – nearly 10 weeks since my surgery -- I am scheduled to meet with the surgeon and I hope to get the OK to walk with a shoe, instead of the fixed boot, on my left foot. Thank you for your prayers for me and please continue them!
DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL (DLA) 2020 It is indeed marvelous that you have once again surpassed not only our Diocesan Target ($29,241) but also our total goal of $39,241. One hundred sixty-nine (169) donors have now given or pledged $41,470.00 to this year’s DLA. We will have then $12,229 from this Appeal that can be used for Parish needs. That’s stupendous considering the state of life during this pandemic. Again, thank you so much for your continued generosity toward the Church. May our Lord and Blessed Mother bless you and keep you close to their hearts.
10-YEAR LOAN REPAYMENT REPORT To date, we have paid back $112,122.86 (including $11,217.46 in interest) on our $300,000 loan plus $35,294.54 interest. Because of extra payments made early, loan amortization is 19 months ahead of schedule, with full repayment expected in November 2026, and a projected parish savings of $8,649.16. Recently, we have not made any extra payments and so our projected repayment date and savings have remained unchanged. THANK YOU ALSO FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish
during the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

SUMMER FESTIVAL CANCELLED FOR THIS YEAR Due to the ongoing pandemic and the many concerns involving “Social Distancing”, it is necessary to cancel this year’s summer festival that was set for August 9.
Parishioners should have already received a note in the mail explaining how we plan to make up for the financial loss of this event. We ask your cooperation and support for this “replacement project” that will take
place throughout the coming year. Last year, our festival had a net profit of over $33,000.00 and so a replacement project was necessary.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS… 2021 FESTIVAL IS SET FOR AUGUST 8!!!
