Éts has been experiencing steady growth ever since its creation in 1974, and even more so during the 1990s and again during the past decade. Éts stands out among engineering schools and faculties in Canada with respect to the number of students and teaching programs, its research, and the development of its campus.

in 2009 and 2010, Éts ranked first in Québec and third in Canada in terms of the number of undergraduates who completed an engineering degree*. this represented a 40% increase in the number of graduates over 2004. in 2010, it posted the highest increase in the number of registrations among all universities in Québec.

research activities have also been thriving since 2000. the significant jump in registrations resulted in the hiring of a number of professors, who have helped to enrich the expertise that our establishment offers to Master’s and doctorate students and the industrial milieu. in 2009-2010, Éts reached new heights in terms of the intensity of research, with the school’s researchers being ranked above average in comparison with their colleagues from other Canadian universities in this respect.

the development of the campus, the facilities and the research infrastructures, along with the creation of new study programs, have also bolstered our industrial partnerships and our international university partnerships. the latter have become significantly more prominent in recent years, and we look forward to numerous further developments in this regard. Our mission, which is focused on teaching and on applied training in engineering and corporate technology transfer, has never been more relevant than it is today.

More specifically, the inGO innovation Centre provides businesses with a research and development venue for technological innovations right on our campus. they have access to the vast expertise of Éts researchers, all of our research laboratories and infrastructures, and the knowledge of our intern students.

in terms of capital assets, we plan to continue the expansion of the campus by erecting additional student residences. At the same time, the student House will provide access to spaces dedicated to work and study, in addition to facilities that have a social vocation.

One last project led by Éts is of great importance to us. the objective of this project, which involves McGill university as an enthusiastic partner, is to make our Borough a virtual innovation district, bringing together the dynamism of the university milieu and organizations that are active in the area of technological innovation, including telecommunications, information technologies and emerging technologies companies. We intend to develop an ecosystem around Éts that is conducive to innovation, along with a community that will foster the development of innovative companies. We believe that the synergy created among all of these players can only lead to effective progress, and that such an environment will provide Montréal with an additional attraction on the local, national and international stage.

A virtual melting pot of projects has been developed at Éts in all of its areas of activity. i encourage you to stay tuned.

specializing in teaching and applied research in engineering and technology transfer for businesses, Éts trains engineers and researchers who are recognized for their practical and innovative approach. Éts is a constituent of the université du Québec network, which comprises 87,000 students, more than 6,000 professors and lecturers, and 3,750 employees at nine establishments located throughout Québec.

since its creation, Éts has pursued a mission that is solidly anchored in all of its activities: responding to the needs of the industrial milieu, which requires engineers who possess not only a sound theoretical foundation, but also practical knowledge.

in support of this mission, the school maintains a unique partnership with businesses and industry, ranging from large corporations to sMEs. Éts clearly stands out from other Québec universities because of the applied training that it provides for future engineers and because of its research activities conducted in collaboration with and for businesses.

APPliEd trAininG At EVEry lEVEl

Éts is the only engineering school in Québec that offers Bachelor of Engineering programs that are created specifically for graduates of technical colleges who wish to acquire university training. it also continues to attract an increasing number of graduates from general college (cégep) programs who are interested in the school’s unique approach. in fact, its Bachelor’s programs comprise more laboratory and practical work sessions than any other undergraduate engineering program in Québec. Éts alone accounts for 25% of all Bachelor of Engineering students in Québec.

At the graduate and post-graduate levels, Éts offers Master’s and doctorate programs in a variety of engineering fields, along with specialized graduate study programs (dEss) and certificates for individuals who wish to receive specific training.

numerous short programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels offer a flexible structure that is particularly appropriate for practicing professionals. the credits that are earned can then be applied toward a dEss, which in turn can be applied toward a Master’s program.

Éts study programs at all levels are focused on the acquisition of eminently concrete knowledge, and providing students with unique know-how that companies and organizations thoroughly appreciate.

sustAinABlE dEVElOPMEnt: A dAily rEAlity the engineer of today and tomorrow has a vital role to play in terms of the innovation and orientation of technologies designed to bring about improved management of resources and a better quality of life for his or her fellow citizens. in its role as an engineering school and a responsible citizen, Éts also strives to train engineers for whom sustainable development will be a priority in their practices.

the sustainable development policy in effect at Éts applies to all of its activities: from teaching to research to procurement, and even to its social involvement in the district and the construction and renovation of buildings on campus. the building that houses the inGO innovation Centre was renovated according to lEEd standards.

Éts adheres to the un Global Compact, and is a member of the sustainable Building Council of Canada. in addition, the Éts student Association has adopted a sustainable development policy that is in keeping with that of the school.

ÉCOlE dE tECHnOlOGiE suPÉriEurE

With respect to energy management, Éts has ranked among the leaders in university establishments in Québec for 25 years, and has been recognized for the energy efficiency of its electromechanical systems on a number of occasions.

Many Éts students complete practical internships at the institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec (irEQ), a major employer of interns.

COOPErAtiVE tEACHinGAt Éts, students learn by doing. When training students at the Bachelor’s level, the cooperative teaching method is used, alternating course sessions and practical internships at companies. this method is one of the main characteristics of Éts, and also one of its strengths. in addition to their courses, all students must complete three internships in industry, totalling at least 12 months, before receiving their diploma. At the end of the program, they have the equivalent of a full year of experience, which is undeniably beneficial in their quest to enter the labour market.

the Cooperative teaching department provides students with all the support they require when preparing for an internship, from researching companies to effective interview techniques. in order to ensure that all students receive internships, the department has a computerized system that contains the contact information for several thousands of businesses. Every year, more than 3,000 internship proposals are presented to Éts students, who earn an average of $12,000 per internship.

the department also created an innovative tool for employers that are seeking interns: ePortfolio, which is presented in the form of a digital Curriculum Vitæ that gives employers preferred access to additional information that is impossible to present on a traditional CV. For instance, employers can find youtube links that allow them to view a clip of a student in action, hyperlinks to a summary of projects completed by a candidate, etc.

lEArninG By dOinGStudent clubSWHErE tHEOry is Put tO tHE tEst

Éts strongly encourages students to join one of the approximately 30 scientific or social/cooperative clubs.

these clubs give students the opportunity to put into practice the theory that they learn in the classroom, and to develop their ingenuity and leadership skills. Every year, Éts students participate in a number of engineering competitions (Formula sAE, solar vehicle, concrete canoe, amphibious all-terrain vehicle, human propelled submarine, etc.) in order to assess their knowledge and that of their peers at leading north American engineering establishments. Over the years, Éts students have earned numerous prestigious awards, in addition to enriching their knowledge and generating recognition for the school in Canada and abroad.

some students choose to use their engineering skills to serve developing countries by participating in the Programme de regroupement étudiant pour la coopération internationale (PrÉCi – student grouping program for international cooperation). Every year, a team of students undertakes a four-month engineering project that adheres to a humanitarian and social mission. Other students prefer socio-community and cultural initiatives or sustainable development projects. All of these initiatives represent a valuable complement to their engineering training.

tecHnological uniVerSity programFor natural ScienceS graduateS

in response to increasing requests from Cégep graduates in natural sciences who are interested in the Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering at Éts and in facilitating their success in a program that focuses primarily on practical training, the school offers a one-year university level technology program (two semesters).

in order to prepare these students for the applied orientation in the Bachelor’s programs, this preparatory program focuses on concrete achievements. the number of hours of practical work is higher than the number of hours spent in the classroom.

Five engineering departments offer more than 70 undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate university programs. At the undergraduate level, the seven Bachelor’s programs include more practical work periods, laboratory sessions and projects than any other engineering study program in Québec. Each program includes three practical internships at companies to complete the students’ theoretical knowledge.

At the graduate and post-graduate levels, the programs are intended for future researchers who are interested in research and development initiatives, and in contributing to the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge.

As a complement to the training that they received at leading engineering schools, most of the members of the Éts teaching staff have also acquired work experience in the industry. thanks to the support of subsidizing companies and organizations, they pursue research activities with a variety of Éts groups, chairs and laboratories. A significant percentage of their mandates originate in industry, and their research activities result in tangible contributions to enhancing productivity and competitiveness in Québec, and to training a highly qualified labour force.

in addition to being researchers and teachers who are committed to transferring their knowledge and training top-notch successors, several are members of international associations in their fields of expertise, and are frequently invited to speak at conferences and present their works at scientific symposia.

EnGinEErinG FOr industry

an eVer-accelerating pace

research activities have been increasing at an extremely fast pace since the early 2000s. in fact, Éts reached new peaks in terms of the intensity of its research in 2010 by securing more than $110,000 in annual financing per professor, which ranks Éts researchers above the average compared with all other Canadian universities in the field. thanks primarily to the growth of its student clientele and its research activities, Éts has more than doubled the surface area of its campus over the past decade. this extra space means that Éts is able to offer facilities that are conducive to discussion and inter-university collaboration. it is also now in a better position to respond to the mandates entrusted to it by the industrial milieu. More than 200 companies enlist Éts to carry out mandates in the development of industrial applications and technology transfer.

recognized for its state-of-the-art research infrastructures Éts has been offering organizations, since 2011, the possibility of leasing offices in the inGO innovation Centre, where they can take advantage of all of the research facilities and the expertise of Éts researchers in developing technological innovations. the inGO innovation Centre is located on the Éts campus (refer to the section entitled technology transfer and innovation at the Heart of the Action).

expertiSe tHat iS attuned to tHat oF tHe city

Aerospace, healthcare and information technologies are economic sectors that help to enhance the reputation of the city, and Éts researchers actively contribute to the richness of these sectors. A number of professors hold research chairs and head or belong to research groups or laboratories in these fields, which make a significant contribution to the economic health of Montréal and Québec.

Every year, Éts conducts business with more than 800 companies that not only provide internships for students, but that also entrust professors with mandates related to the development of industrial applications. in keeping with the school’s mission, which focuses on technology transfer within companies, 75% of the research activities originate directly in industry or involve projects that are carried out jointly with companies. it is also worth noting that half of the members of the Éts Board of directors hail from the industrial milieu.

AÉrOÉts brings together all of the aerospace activities carried out at Éts, comprising two research chairs (refer to the section entitled research), 14 professors, close to 250 student interns/year, 17 industrial partners, and the institut de conception et d’innovation en aérospatiale (iCiA).

this advanced training institute offers practical top-tiered internships in the aerospace industry. students work on design and research projects, and their work is supervised by an industry supervisor. Éts provides follow-up.

in addition to responding to the needs of the Québec aerospace industry, the iCiA is committed to consolidating and increasing collaboration between Éts and industry. it works in close collaboration with the Concordia institute for Aerospace design & innovation, the institut d’innovation et de conception en aérospatiale at Polytechnique de Montréal, and the McGill institute for Aerospace Engineering, in order to provide as many students as possible with an opportunity to acquire experience in the aerospace industry.

Éts has numerous achievements to its credit on the international scene, and is involved in activities on four continents. in order to respond to the needs of industry where they are, specifically in terms of training engineers and consolidating its position around the world, Éts merges its network with partner resources from the Québec industrial milieu, and internally, with those of the international Coordination Bureau (Bureau de la coordination internationale – BCi) and the student recruitment and Mobility Bureau (Bureau du recrutement étudiant et de la mobilité – BrEM).

the international Coordination Bureau oversees the implementation of the Éts internationalization Policy, and orchestrates the activities of all services and departments. to this end, it supervises the arrival and integration of new permanent residents, the international recruitment at all levels of study, the international mobility of Éts students, the internationalization of training, and the integration of researchers from major international research networks, in addition to participating in initiatives involving graduate relations.

the student recruitment and Mobility Bureau contributes to attaining Éts general and operational internationalization objectives, primarily in terms of international recruitment, the mobility of students leaving Éts, and the incoming mobility of students from Éts partner establishments.

studEnt EXCHAnGE PrOGrAM Against a backdrop of globalization, where engineers must integrate into a labour market for which borders no longer exist, the school encourages its students to refine their training abroad within the context of its international exchange program.

While pursuing their program, students can complete one or two sessions at a foreign establishment. Éts students also have access to the establishments that have signed agreements with the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec (CrEPuQ). students can choose from among approximately 100 university establishments in some 30 countries.

in addition, a mutual professional qualification agreement signed in 2009 between France and Québec facilitates student exchanges now more than ever. Éts is becoming an increasingly popular destination for students from France who are seeking to earn their engineering degree.

Among its partner universities, Éts boasts three French technology universities (ut), which not only provide French students with an opportunity to attend Éts, but also allow Chinese students from the université de technologie sino-Européenne at the university of shanghai (utsEus) to register for one of these three technology universities in France. Éts students are able to complete one session at ut and one session at utsEus, followed by a corporate internship in China.

Éts has also signed agreements with a number of French technology university institutes (iut). these establishments offer training that is largely comparable to the technical programs offered at Québec Cégeps, which is where many Éts students originate. since signing these agreements, Éts has hosted several dozen candidates from these institutes.

VAluABlE suPPOrtWith a view to lending a helping hand to students who are preparing for an exchange program, the student recruitment and Mobility Bureau (BrEM) has developed an administrative and financial support infrastructure. the BrEM is a valuable resource for all aspects of the student exchange process, from dealing with admission paperwork for students who are being admitted to the exchange program to choosing the most appropriate host establishment, obtaining mobility scholarships, learning about cultural habits in the host country, sorting through options for accommodations, etc.

the BrEM also offers assistance for international students who hail from partner establishments or members of the Conférence des recteurs et principaux des universités du Québec (CrEPuQ) who are staying at Éts, providing them with support services and all of the information they need in connection with foreign study options. Among other services, the BrEM acts as a liaison between Éts departments and the student’s home establishment.

thanks to the administrative and financial support provided by Éts, Guillaume lamontagne, a graduate of the Master’s program in Electrical Engineering, has been able to dedicate himself completely to his studies during his time in France.

A stiMulAtinG EnVirOnMEnt At Éts, we take care of our students. Welcome and integration activities are conducted twice per year in order to help them to blend into their new living environment without a hitch.

As soon as students arrive at the school, they automatically become members of the Éts student Association (AEÉts), which oversees, organizes and coordinates a variety of activities. they benefit from discounted prices at the student cooperative and on-site sports facilities (gym, fitness room). le 100 génies resto-bar, which is run entirely by students, is the ideal place to relax, grab a bite to eat or have a drink. it is open at meal times and evenings.

the school has a number of residences on campus to accommodate students, many of whom come from outside of Montréal. studio and apartment units (1 to 4 bedrooms) are furnished, heated, well lit, and equipped with cable television and network connections (including internet). students have access to a wide array of practical services. in addition, in order to facilitate their progress during their studies, the school offers leases of 1 year, 8 months, or 4 months. this is an undeniable advantage when the time comes to leave town for an internship.

in a few years, students will have access to the Maison des étudiants, which is designed for them and with them. in addition to gardens and terraces, the Maison will include areas designed for studying, for relaxation and for businesses. it will be the perfect venue for dialogue, activities and information, and will increase the quality of life on campus.

the school also provides large workshops for students who are members of its scientific clubs, where they can design and refine the prototypes that have contributed to the enviable reputation that Éts has forged at international university competitions in which they participate every year.

studEnt sErViCEs the student services department (sAE) offers a variety of valuable resources for all students, including an extensive range of services and activities related to student life, and the organization of work activities and support for academic success. the attentive personnel at the sAE also welcome and accompany international students who are being hosted by Éts, and help them to settle in and integrate socially.

FinAnCiAl Aid the sAE is responsible for administering government loans and bursaries. in addition, working in collaboration with its partners and the Fonds de développement de l’École, Éts disperses numerous study grants every year in several categories (excellence, study support, extracurricular, etc.) for Bachelor-level students.

Graduate and post-graduate students can apply for scholarships from various organizations, including the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQrnt) and nsErC (natural sciences and Engineering research Council of Canada). Financial support is also available in the form of scholarships for research work carried out within the context of subsidized or sponsored projects.

pierre bourQue, Professor in the department of software Engineering and it, and director of the Master of software Engineering program, was appointed as a member of the Board of Governors of the Computer society at the institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (iEEE).

alain abran, Professor in the department of software Engineering and it, is the creator of Cosmic function Points, a measurement method used to estimate projects and performance tests that now appears on the us Government’s list of best practices.

this method helps to significantly improve cost estimates for it projects, which often overrun initially budgeted costs. it can also be used to compare the performance of companies that provide software development services. in 2003, this measurement method was adopted by isO, and is now referred to as isO 19761.

éric granger, Professor in the department of Automated Manufacturing Engineering, was named as a member of the task Force on Biometrics of iEEE Cis (Computational intelligence society) isAtC (international standard Association technical Committee), a prestigious international committee dedicated to the development and promotion of biometric computational intelligence methods.

A member of the imaging, Vision and Artificial intelligence laboratory (liViA), Professor Granger has dedicated his research work to biometric recognition since 2004.

cHakib tadj, department of Electrical Engineering, received a $100,000 bursary for the Grand Challenges Explorations program from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for his research project involving automatic analysis and classification of the cries of newborns with a view to early screening for neurophysiological problems. the Foundation’s program strives to encourage innovation in healthcare around the world.
