On October 13, I spoke about the Power of Purpose from the Society platform. Seveal of you asked for some more about one of my points, and I thought Id share that in

the newsletter. Research among thriving congregations of many kinds shows that people come into or stay with groups like ours, bringing their own motivations. Theyrealways the same what brought someone into the door at 53 Prospect Park West afew years ago may not be what moves them to stay active today. Our motivations alchange at different stages of life. The major motivations people bring in, and whichcan serve as resources in our Society, could be seen as these six:

Compassion: caring about others, having others care about us. I see compassion asthe opposite of indifference or apathy: it is our sympathetic joy as well as empathythe suffering others are going through. In compassion, we make room in our hearts fthe personhood of another person, and we see that others hold our personhood in the

    hearts, as well.

Community: social connections, having good times together, a place and group tbelong to. Affiliation is one of the basic human needs: that old desire to find a plwhere everybody knows my name (even if we have to wear nametags to make theasier for those who dont yet know each other). A community is also a place of suport for us, through our individual struggles to learn to be more ethical in our daily l

Hope: Ethical Culture leader, A. Eustace Haydon, wrote about the resolute followof the star of hope through triumphs and tragedies of time. Hope helps us avoid cycism and bitterness, and see that even if theres no promise for a future turning o

right, theres always some hope. In an Ethical Society we dont offer an easy prescrtion for hope, but a place for us to nurture our hopefulness together.

Challenge: the founder of Ethical Culture, Felix Adler, believed that ethical develment is not just a matter of support, but of challenge. Being in a community wheredont all always think alike, is a way to challenge us each out of the temptation to cplacency. A group like ours is also a place where one can volunteer to be involvedways that build skills, allow accomplishment, and help each person to grow.
