National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
and the TRT: ethically supporting candidates

Answering the Call for Reform
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® is rooted in the belief that the single most important action this country can take to improve schools and student learning is to strengthen teaching.
History
• Created in 1987 in response to the Carnegie Forum on Education release of A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century
• Independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and non-governmental organization governed by 63-member board of directors (majority are teachers)
Mission
Advance the quality of teaching and learning by:
• High and rigorous standards• National voluntary system certifying
teachers• Advocate related education reforms
The Process

• Parameters• 275/400 points needed to achieve• 3 years to achieve
The Portfolio
• Four entries compose 1 portfolio entry• Each entry includes 11 page (max)
written commentary and evidence• The three types of evidence:

Assessment Center
• The format provides six 30-minute exercises over 3 hours.
• Occurs between January 31 – June 30 of certification year
• Computer based testing

Candidate Psychology 101• Candidates are breaking down and reconstructing
their vision for their practice to align with National Teaching and Learning Standards
• Portfolio entries and assessment center responses stand as testimony to meeting the standards
• Control is based in following rules provided in their instructions, rubrics, and scoring and note-taking guides.
• Frustration centers on making good choices on instruction, writing, and evidence selection.

Candidates may seek assistance with the following during their candidacy:
• Formatting the written commentary and cover sheets
• Scanning and inserting into documents images
• Videotaping equipment and strategies• Consultation on numerous levels within the
portfolio and assessment center process

• Hold candidates responsible for all formatting instructions and requirements
• Provide assistance for common requests • setting margins, font types, styles• scanning and inserting images• creating headers for page and candidate ID
numbers• Avoid affirming candidate interpretations,
decisions, or evidence selections.

• Hold candidates responsible for all videotaping instructions.
• Identify what school owned recorders, media card readers, and microphones are available to meet their needs.
• Avoid affirming candidate interpretations, decisions, or evidence selection.

Avoid affirming candidate interpretations, decisions, or evidence selection.
• Refer candidates back to their instructions and guides
• Refer candidates to 1-800-22-Teach for questions
• Refer candidates to www.nbpts.org
Ethical Candidate Support: Consulting Candidates
Questions you can ask to refocus the candidate:
• How does this impact student learning?
• What is your rationale?• Can you clarify this for me, I don’t
understand?
