ESXi/vCenter Log Files When it comes to troubleshooting log files plays a very important role and its necessary to know which logs files contains which data and where to locate the log files. I will be covering up the log file location for vSphere 5.0 ESXi 5.0 Log Files for ESXi 5.0 can be viewed When Connected directly to ESXi host using SSH When connected using Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) When connected to the host using Web browser Most of the Logs are location under /var/log /var/log/auth.log Contains ESXi Shell Authentication /var/log/esxupdate.log Contains ESXi Patch Update Information /var/log/hostd.log Contains information regarding Management server, VM’s and Tasks Events of the hosts /var/log/vmkernel.log Contains Information related to VM, Network and Storage Devices /var/log/ vmkwarning.log Contains Warning and Alert Message from VMKERNEL log /var/log/ vmksummary.log Contains ESXi host Uptime information, VM’s running and reason for host down /var/log/usb.log Contains information related pass-through devices to VM’s /var/log/sysboot.log Contains Information related to VMkernel startup /var/log/syslog.log Contains Information related to watchdogs, DCUI, Scheduled tasks /var/log/dhclient.log Contains Information related to DHCP request /var/log/vpxa.log Contains Information related to vCenter server and hostd agent /var/log/fdm.log Contains Information related to HA vCenter 5.0 Log files for vCenter 5.0 can be viewed when connected to vCenter Click Home > Administration > System Logs vCenter logs will be located on different directory depending on the OS installed For Windows XP, 2000 and 2003 – %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\ For Windows Vista, 7 and 2008 – %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\ For vCenter 5.0 Linux Appliance – /var/log/vmware/vpx/ Below are the logs files found on the vCenter server

vpxd-profiler.log, profiler.log and scoreboard.log

Profiled metrics for operations performed in vCenter Server.

cim-diag.log and vws.log Contains Information of Communication of vCenter and Managed hosts CIM Interface

drmdump\ Contains Information related to  proposed actions by DRS
