This obviously prolongs deliveries. So to improve on these deliveries we are cutting our range slightly hoping to improve on our service. We have studiously looked at our past sales patterns before making these cuts and feel that by slightly reducing the numerous choices and sizes of similar lines we will still be offering the best and widest range of whiteheart malleable builders' ironmongery. We state whiteheart malleable iron as this was and still is the most appropriate material for this style of ironmongery, the strength and durability qualities help give it the long life you would expect from a quality item. Being the market leader the inevitable has happened and competition/rivals/other people have copied our style of ironmongery. There are now a lot of copies of some of our range on offer, but very few of them are made from the true whiteheart malleable iron process, and therefore may not give you the service and lifespan expected. THE MANUFACTURE OF MALLEABLE IRON
The name of Kirkpatrick Ltd. has been synonymous with the production of high quality malleable iron builders'ironmongery for over 140 years. This latest catalogue shows our extensive range of both Black Antique andPlain Gothic styles.
Cast iron products have been familiar to the general public for many years. However, there are many varietiesof cast irons all of which have different properties and applications. Malleable iron is particularly suitable forthe production of builders' ironmongery because of its strength and durability. It should not be confused withcheaper cast iron products which are also available.
All of our malleable iron products are hand made in our Foundry in Walsall using the greensand casting process.At this stage the castings are hard and brittle and cannot be hammered, filed or riveted into finished products.The castings are therefore subjected to a heat treatment process known as Annealing. In this process the castingsare surrounded by an inert haematite ore within iron drums and loaded into ovens of six to eight tons capacity.The ovens take about two days to reach the Annealing temperature of 980C. The castings are then soaked atthis temperature for around 80 hours after which they are allowed to cool naturally. During this process thecarbon structure of the iron is changed. The resulting castings are no longer hard and brittle but soft and malleable.
After shot blasting and grinding to remove any rough edges the castings are then assembled into finished orsemi-finished products. Following assembly a rust proofing finish may be applied and a two-coat paint processis carried out before the products pass into our warehouse for final inspection, assembly and packaging readyfor despatch.
We hope that the foregoing has been interesting and informative and will help develop a greater understandingof what is involved in the production of traditional hand made ironmongery and in particular the length of theproduction process. Please read this in conjunction with the section on the upkeep of ironmongery below whichmay be of use in your choice of material or finish.

TIPS ON THE UPKEEP OF IRONMONGERY
Iron in any form, whether Cast or Malleable, is susceptible to rusting. During our finishing process we endeavourto cover all areas of Antique Ironmongery by first dipping into a liquid paint which is then stove dried. This isthen followed by the Black Powder Coating process, which is also cured by stoving. Inevitably when two areasof metal come into contact with each other an abrasive action is enacted, and sooner or later the painted surfacesare lost by the constant rubbing action. This is unavoidable during the operational activity of the article, sowhere obvious abrasive areas of moving parts are visible an occasional light oiling is recommended. This willhelp to prolong the good looks and keep the rusting process at bay. To remove harmful deposits which will causecorrosion (this is even more critical where one lives near to a coastline, as the salt in the sea air has a verycorrosive affect on iron) we advise that the Ironmongery is regularly wiped over with a lightly oiled cloth.
We strongly advise that these precautions are taken. By adopting these simple precautions you will prolong theproducts life and enhance the beauty of your home.
BRASS, ARMOUR BRIGHT AND SELF-COLOUR LACQUER(These finishes are not recommended for outside use)
The appeal of these finishes, although very attractive to the eye do not lend themselves to exterior use. Thesefinishes are only protected by a stoved powder coat epoxy lacquer finish, and although adequate for internalpurposes it does not weather well and protection life is limited for outdoor use.
The lacquer coating will not last indefinitely and under adverse atmospheric conditions (such as sea air, industrialpollution, etc.) the breakdown is likely to be accelerated. There is no guaranteed timescale for the lacquer tostay impervious to the elements so in some areas this breakdown will be quicker than in others.
You can help prolong the life of the lacquer by regular washing with soap and water followed by an applicationof wax polish and light oiling of moving parts.

Mayor of Walsall, 1887
Founder, in the year 1855, of the business in Walsall, that wascarried on for many years in his name and under his direction.
William Kirkpatrick’s father was John Kirkpatrick the SupremeJudge of the Ionian Islands - whose grandfather was Sir ThomasKirkpatrick, the third Baronet. The first Baronet was created in1685, for “his unswerving Loyalty to the Royal House of Stewart”.
In 1901 the business was incorporated under the style of
Kirkpatrick Ltd.
The origin of “I mak siccar” forms a direct link with one of the most decisive events in Scotland’sHistory.
The defeat of Wallace by Edward I at Falkirk in 1298, was reputed to be due to the defection of theforces of John Comyn, Earl of Badenoch, to the English. After the capture and execution of Wallacein 1304, Comyn had ambitions of becoming King of Scotland himself. It was at the Monastery inDumfries that Robert the Bruce, a strong supporter of Wallace and Comyn came face to face. Theyquarrelled. Comyn was stabbed by Bruce. Rushing out to his escorts, Bruce told them “I doubt Ihave slain Comyn.” Roger Kirkpatrick, saying “I mak siccar” (I’ll make certain) ran into the buildingand finding Comyn wounded, but alive stabbed him to the heart. Subsequently Robert the Bruce wascrowned King of Scotland in 1306.
In 1951 a bronze plaque was unveiled in Castle Street, Dumfries, marking the spot where Comyn wasslaughtered.

HANDING & OPERATION
The cassette system used in this product allows it to be either leftor right handed, to suit any door arrangement.
For help in deciding the correct handing for your door see diagramabove, then make sure that the cassette label showing the handyou want always faces away from the door.
CASSETTE FIXING
ROD & GUIDE FIXING
Slide two guides (G) onto bottomrod (M) and fix this rod to thebottom of the cassette (K) asshown, using screw and lock-washer (B). Using this assembly,mark out the position for thecassette fixing screws (A) on thedoor.
It is important to check that thebottom of the rod fits the openingrather than the door - do this withthe door closed in its frame.Using only the screw positionsshown, fix cassette (K) to doorusing screws (A) - the other twoholes are to take the screws forfixing the cover handle intoposition.
Slide two guides (G) onto top rod(L), and fix this rod to the top of thecassette (K) using screw and lockwasher (B). Locate both guides asshown in diagram and fix intoposit ion using screws (D).
Take care to keep rods vertical - inorder to do this it is helpful to fixend guides first.
CASSETTE &COVER HANDLE
Insert spindle (E) intocentre of cassette (K)before sliding cover handle(F) over it. Ensure handleis in open position (see fig1) when f i t t ing overcasset te as shown.Ensure bolt operatessmoothly, then removecover handle (F) andtighten all screws securely.
Replace cover handle (F)and screw firmly into placeusing screws (C).
