THE ESSENCE OF SAIL ING

De loodskotter werd ontwikkeld vanuit de behoefde van de loods om snel de grote koopvaardijschepen te bereiken en deze vervolgens veilig naar de haven te begeleiden. Loodsen waren doorgaans lokale vissers, die van de lokale haven toestemming kregen om als loods op te treden. Zij opereerden als kleine zelfstandigen, dus hoe sneller zij van en naar de haven voeren, des te meer extra geld zij verdienden. Aangezien hun vissersboten daarvoor te log en te zwaarbeladen waren, zochten zij naar een nieuw type boot. The pilot cutter developed from the need for a fast boat to take the maritime pilots from the harbour to the incoming large trading vessels and guide them safely into port. Most early pilots were local fisherman who were licensed by the harbour to operate within their jurisdiction. Pilots were generally self-employed, and the quicker they were, the greater their income. As their fishing boats were heavy working boats, and filled with fishing equipment, they needed a new type of boat. Early boats were developed from single masted fishing cutter designs and twin masted yawls, and latterly into the specialist pilot cutter. The unique features of the bow and stern have been incorporated into the design of the Essence 33®, making it one of the fastest ships in its class.

Guido de Groot had al een indrukwekkende carrière als auto-ontwerper achter de rug, toen hij in 1997 de switch maakte naar het ontwerp van luxe jachten. Inmiddels heeft hij wereldwijd naam gemaakt met uitdagende projecten en opmerkelijke eindresultaten. Voor de Essence 33® verzorgde hij de interieurstyling. “Ik heb niet één kenmerkende stijl die men verbindt met mijn signatuur, omdat ik juist graag meebeweeg met de specifieke wensen van mijn klant. Modern of klassiek, overdadig of juist minimalistisch: ik ga op zoek naar de feeling van het schip en vertaal dat naar interieur en exterieur. Het belangrijkste is dat alles klopt en met elkaar in evenwicht is. Voor de Essence 33® lag er al een prachtig ontwerp, met een klassieke belijning en een sportieve touch. De styling van de binnenruimte sluit daar naadloos op aan, met een hoogwaardige afwerking en verrassende combinaties van materialen. Door te spelen met rondingen en details creëer ik een exclusieve uitstraling die voelbaar warm en uitnodigend is. En functioneel natuurlijk, zeker in deze ruimte. Guido de Groot already had an impressive career as a car designer, when in 1997 he made the switch to designing luxury yachts. He has since made a name for himself all over the world, with his challenging projects and remarkable end results. For the Essence 33® he designed the interior. “I do not have one significant style that can be linked to my signature, because I like to go with the flow of the specific desires of my client. Modern or classical, luxurious or minimalistic: I will always look at the feel of the ship and translate that into the interior and exterior. The most important thing is that it all feels right and that it is in balance. There was already a beautiful design made for the Essence 33®, with its classical lining and sportive touch. The styling of the interior matches perfectly with that, adding a high quality finish and using different combinations of materials. By playing with the curves and details I have created an exclusive look which feels warm and inviting. It must also be functional of course, especially with this kind of size. It is of no use to design beautiful things which cannot be made. That is why, in every project, I work closely together with the client and the suppliers involved. The Essence 33® was designed as a daysailer, but is also a seaworthy yacht. One sails the

Essence 33® in the company of good friends. A day on the water, surrounded by freedom

and luxury, with a nice glass of wine and a well-filled cool box. Both the interior as well as

the deck will give you plenty of space for these purposes. Despite its considerable size, the

ship can be trailered so there is no need to worry about expensive moorings in the warmer

regions. You are manoeuvrable, flexible and free to go wherever you please.

Deze wordt gerealiseerd doordat de basisconstructie van het jacht deels bestaat uit een carbon bewapening met longitudinale stringers. Een andere eigenschap die de Essence 33® onderscheidt van alle andere jachten, is dat er veel aandacht is uitgegaan naar het zo laag en centraal mogelijk brengen van het gewicht in het schip. Zowel de accu’s als de water- en brandstoftanks en de motor zijn centraal en zo diep mogelijk in de romp gesitueerd. Dit maakt de Essence tot een goed uitgebalanceerd schip waarmee het geweldig zeilen is.

Material stiffness is one of the key features of the Essence 33®, as part of the construction consists of carbon fibre structural grids and longitudinal stringers. These features add to the stiffness of the hull and ensure that a maximum performance can be reached in both hull and rig.

One of the factors which sets the Essence 33® apart from other yachts, is the fact that much attention has been given to keeping the weight of the yacht as low and as central as possible. The batteries, as well as the water and fuel tanks and the engine, are all located centrally and low down in the ship. The result of this is a well-balanced yacht, which is truly a pleasure to sail.

State of the art design programs and 3D modeling have been used in designing the Essence 33®, to ensure the remarkable accuracy of the Essence 33® with features like the vacuum infusion and the sandwich construction with a high-density foam core. The craftsmen who work at the Essence Yacht building yard, all take great pride in their work. Special features like the teak deck, the cockpit entrance and the interior panels and cabinets, are works of art that are being built to last. A great deal of thought has been given to the practicalities of day-sailing, resulting in numerous clever storage solutions for extended cruises.
