EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES 561-868-3840Palm Beach State’s outstanding EMS programs are approved bythe Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and follow themost current National Emergency Medical Services EducationStandards Curriculum.

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) CCCIn ambulance services, fire departments and hospital emergencyrooms, EMT-Bs help save lives by providing basic emergency care,such as stabilizing patients, controlling bleeding and givingoxygen. This one-semester, limited access program prepares youfor this vital career. Graduates are eligible to take the NationalRegistry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam, whichis the Florida-approved route to becoming a state certified EMT-B.

Emergency Medical Services(EMS) ASIf you want to advance in the EMS field and increase your salary potential,get this Associate in Science degree. Paramedics with an A.S. degree are indemand for positions as instructors and supervisors, and may qualify for astate-sponsored salary incentive. Since the EMT-B and Paramedic programsare part of this degree, if you’ve already earned these certificates, you aremore than halfway there. Go for it!

Paramedic CCCParamedics save lives by performing advanced life supportprocedures such as intubation to clear a patient’s airway ordefibrillation in cases of cardiac arrest. This CoAEMSP-accredited*,12-month program incorporates clinical experiences in localhospitals and riding with emergency response units. Applicantsmust be an EMT-B and meet other criteria to be considered for thislimited access program. Graduates are eligible to take the NationalRegistry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam, which isthe Florida-approved route to becoming a state certified Paramedic.

CRIMINAL JUSTICEINSTITUTE 561-868-3398The Criminal Justice Institute at Palm Beach State College iscertified as a Type “A” Training Center by the Criminal JusticeStandards and Training Commission of the Florida Department ofLaw Enforcement.

Admission Requirements: Each Criminal Justice Institute programhas a set of criteria for admissions consideration. Go to our websitefor full details.

EMT/Firefighter Combination PSAVAs another pathway to entry-level positions in firefighting, thisprogram combines emergency medical technician and firefightercurricula into a single program of study. Students first complete theEMT-Basic coursework and then go directly into firefighter training.This program meets the requirements to prepare students for theNational Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examand the state firefighter written and practical certification exams.Passing these exams is mandatory for employment.

Firefighter PSAVThis intensive Firefighter program gives you top-notch training tofight any blaze, be it a small kitchen incident or a 200-acre brushfire. Instruction includes vehicle fires and extrication, apparatusand equipment as well as structural and wildland fires. You mustmeet physical ability and other criteria to be placed in theselection pool for this limited access program. Applicants arefurther evaluated based on their work experience and status as acertified EMT or paramedic. Graduates are eligible to take thestate written and practical certification exams; passing is arequirement for employment as a firefighter.

Employing unique and comprehensive facilities, Palm BeachState’s Fire Science programs follow the curriculum established by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training of the Florida StateFire College.

Fire Officer Supervisor (Officer 1) CCCAlready a firefighter? Enhance your opportunities for advancementby preparing to become a first line fire officer. This program trainsfirefighters to lead fire safety inspections, use proper strategies tofight fire, and serve as an incident commander, trainer and mentor.

Fire Science Technology ASAdvance your fire rescue career with this Associate in Sciencedegree. You’ll build expertise in many aspects of the profession,including fire behavior and combustion, fire prevention, legal andethical issues, and leadership. Elective courses cover firefightingstrategies and tactics, blueprint reading and fire serviceinstructional design, preparing you for better-paying supervisoryand instructor jobs. In fact, the state offers additional pay as anincentive for earning an A.S. degree. Many of the courses areavailable online and also qualify as recertification courses for fireinspectors and fire instructors.

CROSS-OVER TRAININGPalm Beach State’s cross-over programs adhere to the CurriculumMaintenance System (CMS) established by the Florida Department ofLaw Enforcement to ensure that officer training remains job-related,valid and up-to-date. Prepare for dual certification in the cross-overprogram that fits your profile:

CMS Law Enforcement to Correctional Officer PSAV

Correctional Officer to CMS Law Enforcement PSAV

BASIC RECRUIT ACADEMIESBegin a career in law enforcement or corrections by training inthese well-established and respected programs. The basic recruitacademies are highly structured, limited access programs governedby Palm Beach State College, the Criminal Justice Standards andTraining Commission, and the Region XII Training Council.

Law Enforcement Officer PSAVThis basic recruit academy trains you for entry-level police work inFlorida. Program length is 23 weeks full time or 33 weeks part time.

Corrections Officer PSAVThis basic recruit academy prepares you to work as an entry-levelcorrections officer in Florida. Program length is 12 weeks full time or30 weeks part time.

Upon successful completion of either academy, graduates areeligible to take the Florida State Officer Certification Examination.

Public Safety Telecommunications PSAVWhen you call 911, who answers? Public safety dispatchers play acritical role as the initial first responders. Under Florida law, 911dispatchers must complete 232 hours of training and pass acertification exam. This state-approved program offers 16 extra hoursdevoted to test preparation and takes students on field trips to seedispatchers and emergency responders in action. Once certified,graduates are ready to embark on high-paying, high-demand careersas dispatchers for police, fire and ambulance units.

Criminal Justice Technology AS, AA561-868-3773Learn about police administration, forensic science and criminal lawas you get ready to enter or advance in the criminal justice profession.

• Law Enforcement concentration is offered as an A.S. degree forgraduates of the Basic Recruit Academies as well as correctionsor law enforcement officers. PBSC Law Enforcement Officergraduates automatically earn credits toward this degree. Anyworking officer completing this degree may receive salaryincentives from the state.

• Non-Sworn concentration is offered as either an A.A. or A.S.degree for students who want to pursue a criminal justicecareer, work in law enforcement, intelligence or criminology, or plan to attend a bachelor’s degree program.

Crime Scene Technology CCC, AS561-868-3773Study real crime scene investigation, not what’s on TV. Learn how to process and preserve physical evidence, reconstruct crimes andvehicle accidents, photograph crime scenes and prepare exhibits fortrial. Graduates pursue careers as crime scene investigators orevidence technicians for law enforcement, medical examiners, lawand insurance firms or private forensic labs.
