BBC Makes ESO Film
Laie last year. the well-knownpopularizer 01 astronomy Dr. PatrickMoore, producer Pieler Morpurgo and acamera crew from BBC·TV paid a visit10 La Silla in order 10 produce a new filmabout ESO. Made on ESO's behalf. Ihisfilm is a general introduelion 10 tlle or-
ganizalion and the work carried oul atLa Silla and Garching. lhe film subslitules Ule previous ESO film whicllwas made in 1985.
At the same time. lhe BBC leam prepared two programmes for Ihe popularSky al Night TV series, which has run onBBC every month for more Ihan 30years. Devoted 10 Ihe NTI, Ihe firsl ofIhe Iwo programmes was broadcast in
February 1990 and Ihe seeond programme. aboul millimetre astronomy. isdue to be shown very soon. The piclures

First Announcement
A worksllop organized by ESO on
RAPID VARIABILITY OF OB-STARS:NATURE AND DIAGNOSTIC VALUE
will be held from 15 to 17 Oclober 1990 at ESO. GarehinQ, FAG.
Tile purpose of Ihe workshop is to extensively discuss Ihe various modelswhich have been suggested to explain Ihe rapid variability 01 early-type slars. In addition 10 the comparison of observalions with models. an allempl will bemade 10 assess tlle impact. if any. of the variabilily on Ille general understanding of OB stars.
Topies Include: Observalions of 0, B. and Be stars - Pllolomelry - llneprofiles - Nonradial pulsation - Star spots - Circumstellar struclures Atmospheric diagnostics - Transient phenomena - Mass loss.
The Scientifie Organizing Committee consisls of H. Ando, D. Baade (ehair).C. T. BoiIon, H. Henrichs. and L. B. lucy.

The California Instilute of Technology(Caltech) of Pasadena, California.U.S.A., and the European Soulhern Observatory have concluded an agreementby which ESO will undertake the responsibility of producing tligh-qualilycopies of pholographic sky surveyplates oblained willl Ihe Palomar48-inch Oschin Telescope and 10 distribute lhe resulting photographic atlas.
The second Palomar Observatory SkySurvey is a decade-Iong project tophotograph the entire northern sky using sensilive pholographic teclmiques. The new alias 01 the heavens, conlainedon 2.682 glass plates or film transpareneies. will serve as the baslc astronomical guide to Ihe northern skies for deeades to eome. It will be known as thePa/omar Observalory EuropeanSouthern Observatory Atlas of IheNorthern Sky.
"We are delighled that ESO will beeopying and distributing the results ofthe Palomar Sky Survey", says Robert J.Brueato. assistanl direclor of PalomarObservatory. "ESO has eonsiderableexperience from lheir work on theSouthern sky surveys eondueted byESO and by tlle United KingdomSchmidl Telescope in Auslralia and Iheresults were excellenl. We had beenPlanning on doing the eopying and dislributing at Callech. bul we deeided 10have Ihe work done at ESO in Ihe interest of making Iligh-quality copies available 10 the astronomical community alIhe minimum price possible".
The pholographie work at ESO will beearried oul by a team of experiencedpholographers. The laboralory employshighly specialized teehniques, many of
whieh were invented al ESO. alld whichguarantee a minimal loss of informalionin IIle copying process. The laboraloryslaff has more than 15 years of practicewith survey and atlas work Ul the soulhern Sky.
The mulli-million dollar Palomar Observatory Sky Survey is funded bygranls !rom the Easlman Kodak Company. the Nalional Geographlc Soeiety, the Samuel Oschin Foundation, and theAlfred Sioan Foundation, with additionalfunding !rom NASA and Ihe NationalSeienee Foundation. Begun in 1986. lhesurvey is scheduled for eompletion inlila mid-1990s. ESO expects to termi-
nate Ihe copylng a few years later. having then dislributed Ihe entire atlas 10aslronomical institutes all over Iheworld.
Caltech look its firsl step in the business of sky surveys in 1948. when Institute astronomers and teehnicians beganthe eight-year lask of mapping thenorthern sky for the firsl Palomar SkySurvey. This proved to be one of Ihemost important developments in 20lhcentury aslronomy. because it providedaslronomers witll an unprecedenledwealttl of information about theheavens. ESO carried out similar surveys of lhe soulhern sky after the erec-
